Bichoo was intolerable garbage. I don't know why, but I just had to say that.
Though I don't, by any means, "love" Ram Gopal Varma's more recent work, I agree that his films don't reek of "plagiarism" the way in which do Sanjay Gupta's. I don't, however, accept that Nishabd will be completely distinct from Nabokov's Lolita; of course, I'll have to wait to find out.
Kaante I rather liked, though, certainly, it was very similar to Reservoir Dogs. Honestly, I think Sanjay Gupta does a good job making films; his story-telling, his techniques, they are excellent — sadly, they are altogether unoriginal. If he could just be creative and ingenuous, I think he could come up with some really great movies.
Hum Kaun Hai? was one of the worst films of 2004. It might have been one of the best, had it not been a scene-by-scene, moment-by-moment rip-off of The Others; but, it was, and thus is was trash. Further, it shamelessly exploited Amitabh Bachchan's name and fame, for the purpose of selling tickets. It's fine for a film to make it known that it features a big star, but Hum Kaun Hai? did not "feature" Bachchan; it "threw him in," so people would spend some money. It also decided to cast Dharmendra (conveniently named, "Veeru") alongside Bachchan...he, too, had about a minute and a half's time on-screen.
I'd have lambasted Ek Ajnabee non-stop if it hadn't offered me Amitabh Bachchan in an action role after a while. Mumbai Se Aaya Mera Dost was original and shitty, and Ek Ajnabee was flashy, fun, and cool, and unforgivably plagiarized. Not even the superficialities were altered: "How about Bachchan teach the girl cricket, rather than swimming"; "...Nah."
I absolutely loved Aetbaar, and loathe how over-looked and under-rated it goes. Bipasha Basu and John Abraham were miscast, but the film, as a whole, was well-put-together and enjoyable. The background score was great, the ambiance was great, the scenes were awesome, and Amitabh Bachchan ruled as a frustrated and concerned father.
Coming back to Nishabd, it seems that the film wrapped up rather quickly. Perhaps this means we'll be seeing it by the last quarter of 2006. I don't want to expect too much, but I do hope it's not a waste of a movie ticket.
