Bichoo was intolerable garbage. I don't know why, but I just had to say that.

Though I don't, by any means, "love" Ram Gopal Varma's more recent work, I agree that his films don't reek of "plagiarism" the way in which do Sanjay Gupta's. I don't, however, accept that Nishabd will be completely distinct from Nabokov's Lolita; of course, I'll have to wait to find out.

Kaante I rather liked, though, certainly, it was very similar to Reservoir Dogs. Honestly, I think Sanjay Gupta does a good job making films; his story-telling, his techniques, they are excellent — sadly, they are altogether unoriginal. If he could just be creative and ingenuous, I think he could come up with some really great movies.

Hum Kaun Hai? was one of the worst films of 2004. It might have been one of the best, had it not been a scene-by-scene, moment-by-moment rip-off of The Others; but, it was, and thus is was trash. Further, it shamelessly exploited Amitabh Bachchan's name and fame, for the purpose of selling tickets. It's fine for a film to make it known that it features a big star, but Hum Kaun Hai? did not "feature" Bachchan; it "threw him in," so people would spend some money. It also decided to cast Dharmendra (conveniently named, "Veeru") alongside Bachchan...he, too, had about a minute and a half's time on-screen.

I'd have lambasted Ek Ajnabee non-stop if it hadn't offered me Amitabh Bachchan in an action role after a while. Mumbai Se Aaya Mera Dost was original and shitty, and Ek Ajnabee was flashy, fun, and cool, and unforgivably plagiarized. Not even the superficialities were altered: "How about Bachchan teach the girl cricket, rather than swimming"; "...Nah."

I absolutely loved Aetbaar, and loathe how over-looked and under-rated it goes. Bipasha Basu and John Abraham were miscast, but the film, as a whole, was well-put-together and enjoyable. The background score was great, the ambiance was great, the scenes were awesome, and Amitabh Bachchan ruled as a frustrated and concerned father.

Coming back to Nishabd, it seems that the film wrapped up rather quickly. Perhaps this means we'll be seeing it by the last quarter of 2006. I don't want to expect too much, but I do hope it's not a waste of a movie ticket.

Hi mola ram

I voted for Ramu's version. The story is very different from the thrillers and comedies he usually makes.

sounds very promising.

After flirting with shutterbugs, Big B goes behind the camera

After Hours Correspondent
Thursday, June 08, 2006 20:40 IST

Ram Gopal Varma wrapped up the Amitabh Bachchan starrer ‘Nishabd’ in three weeks, creating a record for himself. Also for the first time, the Big B, who has flirted with shutterbugs for decades, actually gets on the other side of the lens. He plays a photographer in ‘Nishabd’, the alleged screen version of Vladimir Nabokov’s timeless novel ‘Lolita’.
A source reveals, “Mr Bachchan plays a wildlife photographer. He spots Jiah (the heroine) for the first time when she’s watering plants in a garden. She’s wet when Mr Bachchan starts clicking her incessantly. That’s how their love story begins.”
Interestingly, what also comes to light here is RGV’s apparent fascination for photographers much like his mafia fixation. In the past, RGV has made Saif Ali Khan and Fardeen Khan play photographers in ‘Darna Mana Hai’ and ‘Pyar Tune Kya Kiya’ respectively.

Big B finds his voice again

Subhash K Jha

Amitabh Bachchan's penchant for music is not new, but after singing the theme song in Baabul, Bachchan will be again singing for Ram Gopal Varma's Nishabd.

This crooning event is made unique with musician-turned-filmmaker Vishal Bharadwaj presence, who's been brought into the project especially to compose a song for the Big B.

Says Ramu, "Vishal and I worked really well on the tracks of Satya. Till date, songs like 'Sapne mein milti hai' and 'Geela geela pani' are remembered. Unfortunately I never got a chance to work with him again. But now in Nishabd I felt Vishal was the best person to bring in a mood-driven theme song. And who better qualified to sing it than Amitji?"

Bharadwaj is equally excited about working with Bachchan. "The idea of working with Ramu again was exciting enough. But to compose a song for Mr Bachchan is something else. I can't sleep any more. Fortunately a young promising poet from Chandigarh named Munna Dhimani who also wrote my songs in Madhavan's Ramji Londonwale came up with the perfect lyrics for the song. It's hard to believe, but Munna gave me the words over the phone."

The song entitled 'Rozana' is a genre-free ballad. "You cannot call it a tragic theme song nor a straightforward romantic song. Mr Bachchan's voice is in such fine shape. He has never sounded better. In some of the nuances that he has rendered for his Baabul song he has outdone professional singers."

Well, looking at the stills of the film that have been released, the character that Jiah Khan plays looks to be in her twenties; at the youngest, her late teens. I don't think that someone who has sex with someone of that age qualifies as a "pedophile." Views on pedophilia — and "cut-off" ages — vary widely, but I doubt that anyone would consider a person who has sex with someone seventeen or older (Jiah's character just can't be younger than that) a "pedophile."
