Finally, I got my hands on a copy of Bombay Dream's album (I live in the United States, btw). I was a bit anxious, as I had heard from many people how much of a disappointment it had been. However, after giving it some time, I really began to enjoy some of the numbers, even a few of the redone ones.

The theme music, title track, Like an Eagle, and Don't Release me, all original tracks, are very well-composed and make for a great listen. The re-done versions of Ishq Bina (Love's Never Easy), Rangeela Re (Happy Endings), and the others are standard, but aren't too bad. The re-done Shakalaka Baby is just amazing, and complements the original very well. Chaiyya Chaiyya mixed again sounds great. Some of the other original numbers, like The Journey Home, and the Ganesha number are wonderful.

That brings me to perhaps the album's finest track: The Wedding Qawali (Sona Sona). Rendered by AR Rahman and Sukhwinder Singh, this is an absolutely amazing, outstanding track, perhaps some of the best music I've heard out of Rahman recently. A catchy, infectious track, this one could be very well-picturized in the films on two great dancers (say, someone like Hrithik Roshan and Arjun Rampal).

Overall, not the disappointment I heard it was. It's a pretty damn good soundtrack, and I'm glad I own it. Though it was a bit expensive (British imports), I really enjoy the album still, and can't wait for the play to come to Broadway.

I like the music very much. My favourite is "The Journey
Home". I have seen the stage production twice. The musical
is number one in London and most shows are sold out.
The second time they repeated two numbers in the
end to the public's delight. If you sit close enough
you can see that Dalip Tahil's producer has a prison
jacket with the number 420 on it. And in the beginning
they reference a scene from "Shree 420".
cheers
Michel Hafner

I went to see the stage production last night. I haven't heard the OST on CD, but obviously I heard all the songs as part of the play. I think the best by far was 'Shakalaka baby', especially with Sophiya Haque dancing to it  (Ayesha Dharkar was not playing the part of Rani). It sounded great on the stage and now I regret not buying the single, I think it's even better than the original! They even played it again at the end. It's a shame that the music video wasn't that great and that it didn't do too well in the charts.

Of the other tunes I liked Chaiya chaiyya, the Ganesh number and Sukhwinder Singh tunes were all great.
However, I didn't like the english version's of some of the songs (e.g. from Taal). But the title tune 'Bombay Dreams' and 'Salaam Bombay' were quite catchy.

Ranjeet? I'm not sure if you're referring to me, but I'll respond anyway.

The Bombay Dreams album I have is straight from England (my brother was there, and picked up the album for me). It's published by "Really Useful Records" as opposed to Sony.

Any word on Bombay Dreams ever reaching the US?

Hey there. Actually, the name would be Rishi. :)

Is that the Sony label one?

As far as the play hitting broadway, I remember hearing about that on Planetbollywood earlier.

this music is simply amazing. i'd rank it among the best that rahman has ever done. i'm not sure if i love it so much because i can understand the lyrics perfectly for the first time(i need subtitles to watch indian movies), or because the music is just that good.

right now i'm hooked on "closer than ever" which is a remake of "nahin samne" and i like this remake better than the original. i'm not a big fan of hariharan's voice which is probably why the original was never my favorite. the intro music to this song with the sitar is just amazing.

the remixes of other hindi songs, along with "like and eagle", and "the journey home" are also beautiful. i'm sure the "wedding qawwali" will grow on me in time.

i wouldn't say there is a bad song on this album. this is one album which you can easily play beginning to end without having to skip over weak songs.

can't wait for it to come to toronto. (ahh...the benefits of living in a big, multicultural city)
