Veturi – an epitome of literature
IndiaGlitz [Sunday, May 23, 2010]

Not among us today, one of the greatest poets and lyricists ever of Andhra Pradesh, Veturi Sundarama Murthy Sastry passed away following a cardiac arrest on 22nd May 2010. He was admitted to the Care Hospital in Hyderbad where he breathed his last. Veturi is survived by his wife and three sons. IndiaGlitz conveys sincere condolences to his family.

On 29th January 1936, Veturi Sundarama Murthy was born in a Brahmin family. After his education, Veturi worked as a journalist in leading Telugu magazines for 18 years before entering the film scenario to pen songs. His first break was in K.Vishwanath’s ‘O Seetha Katha’ writing a ‘Harikatha’ in the form of ‘Bharatha Naari Charithamu…’

Veturi was a river of words. Ever flowing with beautiful words, Veturi penned more than twelve thousand songs. Known for his love for the Telugu language, Veturi was a true Telugu patriot. Having won a National Award for his song ‘Raalipoye Puvva Neeku’ in ‘Maathrudevo Bhava’, he declined to accept the award as Telugu was not recognized as a classical and ancient language.

A popular quote says ‘A Man is known by the people he has around’. With a whole lot of well wishers around, Veturi was not just a man of people he had but ‘A Man of Words’. Effortlessly penning both melodious songs as well as mass commercial hits, Veturi connected well with the Telugu audience. Songs filled with pathos or songs so lively, Vetturi made every word count. ‘Abba Nee Theeyani Dabba’ from ‘Jagadeka Veerudu Athiloka Sundari’ starring Chiranjeevi and Sri Devi, a flirty duet between the lead pair, received a lot of appreciation as the song dealt the love for two in a sensible yet sensuous way.

Not just the lyricist he was, Veturi was also a poet who wrote beautiful poems on various topics especially Telugu. His love for the language is extraordinary and never compromised in the quality of language. His command over Telugu literature needs no description for his words described what he was.

Veturi offered his services for the last time for Mani Ratnam’s ‘Villain’ with music composed by A R Rahman.

A song is not just for a moment. It conveys what it preceded and what it succeeds. Songs penned by Veturi had the same essential quality. For such a great man, the littlest thing that could be offered is a tribute in English. ‘Words are eternal’ quoted by an anonymous person. ‘Veturi is eternal’ always with his songs that will never fade just like the glory of Telugu.

Singer Swarnalatha passes away
By Moviebuzz | Sunday, 12 September , 2010, 18:48

One of the most popular voices of the 90’s, Swarnalatha passed away today morning (September 12) at a private hospital, due to lung problems. The singer was just 37 at the time of her death

The Chitoor in Palakkad district of Kerala born singer has been a favourite of AR Rahman and Ilayaraja and has sung some of their early chartbusters. Harris Jayaraj tweeted- “I was shocked hearing the sudden demise of Swarnalatha. May her soul rest in peace and god bless her family”

Her major plus was that she could sing a melody for AR Rahman like Poralle Ponnuthayi in Bharathiraja’s Karuthamma for which she got the National Award for the best playback singer (1995) and at the same time belt out a fast peppy Mukabala, Mukabala in Kathalan . She has sung some of ARR’s hit numbers in the 90’s

Similarly under Ilayaraja, she has sung the fast and peppy Aattama Therottama in Captain Prabhakar a rage during those days. Remember earlier Swarnalatha has sung the melodious Povomma Oorkolam in Chinna Thambi for which she got the Tamil Nadu State Award for best playback singer. Swarnalatha's death is also very sad. Although we didnt expect this, it seems she was sufferring from lung infection (sply for a singer, it must be real hard) for over a year. No wonder why she didnt perform movie songs for the past few years. My favorite includes "Maalayil yaaro manathodu pesa" and "poralae ponnu thayi" from Karuththamma.

Writer – Director Pankaj Advani is no more

PFCdesktop | People | November 11, 2010 at 1:38 pm

The dynamic and down to earth Pankaj Advani passed away in the early hours of today ( 11th November, 2010 ). Pankaj who was just around 45 had written for films like Kabhi Haan Kabhi Naa and then went on to direct ( and write ) films like Urf Professor, Cape Karma, Sankat City and even a children’s film – ” Sunday” ( for Childrens Film Society of India ).

He was a strong supporter of PFC and was the first to come out and support our new venture Dingora, by releasing his movie Urf Professor, which was listed as one of the best comedies made in India

In Pankaj Advani, we found a friend and advisor, who would have no qualms in asking us for our opinion be it his new story he was working on or his next post on PFC. One of the most geniune persons we have come across in our journey through Mumbai’s film industry, this is a great loss for us and all the more for his friends and his dear family.

Rest in peace, dear Pankaj… the Old Monk with his wings has left us forever and so has the loving, whacky, care a damn blogger Bakchodi… gone forever… Adios dear friend…

Actress Nalini Jaywant's 'death' shrouded in mystery

Quote:
Mystery surrounds the 'death' of yesteryear actress Nalini Jaywant who, neighbours say, passed away three days ago in tragically lonely circumstances at her bungalow in Chembur. Her relatives and those she had once worked with in the film industry were all unaware of the passing of the star who scaled the heights of fame in the 1940s and '50s but had turned into a complete recluse for the last many years.

Jaywant's neighbour Ajay Kapoor told TOI that the security and domestic staff in the colony saw the body being taken away in an ambulance on Tuesday. "However, by the time we got to know about it, it was all over," he says. "We heard from our staff that a man, who claimed to be a distant relative , came and took the body away. The house is locked and in complete darkness for the past three days, the servants have gone, and Naliniji's pet dogs are on the streets. We neighbours have been taking care of them."

While the Chembur ward office said it could only confirm on Monday whether it had issued a death certificate for 84-year-old Jaywant, inquiries with the actress' relatives, too, drew a blank. "Her father was my cousin but we had lost touch for years," says veteran theatreperson Vijaya Mehta. Actress Tanuja, whose mother Shobhana Samarth was Jaywant's first cousin, was shocked to hear the news; as was Dev Anand with whom Jaywant did hit films like Munimji and Kala Pani with evergreen songs like Jeevan ke safar mein rahi and Nazar laagi raja tore bangle par.

Yogi Nigam, another neighbour of Jaywant, says she had stopped meeting people altogether . "Many years earlier, we would visit each other's houses but after her husband's death a few years ago, she withdrew completely from society," he says. "I don't think anyone ever came to look her up. I happened to catch sight of her a few days earlier and noticed that she had hurt her leg. Her maid said she had had a fall. I asked her if I could do anything, send the doctor to her house. But she was never forthcoming so one couldn't do much for her."

Jaywant, who worked with the biggest names in the film industry from Dev Anand to Ashok Kumar and Dilip Kumar, preceded the legendary actresses of the 1950s like Nutan, Meena Kumari, Madhubala , Waheeda Rehman and Vyjayanthimala by a few years. For film buffs and connoisseurs she will always remain a big marquee name of cinema's golden era.

He was 70. His business partner and family friend, Khaleem Pasha, said, "He was hospitalised after a massive heart attack on Saturday afternoon. He passed away today."

Bob Christo first made waves when he was introduced by actor-filmmaker Sanjay Khan in the film "Abdullah". Says Pasha, "Bob came to India to meet actress Parveen Babi, but ended up getting a break in the film 'Abdullah'."

Bob was a qualified civil engineer, but his good looks got him modelling assignments. He even got a small role in a Marlon Brando-starrer but on a friend's advice let it go, and instead began building film sets. His modelling assignment made him travel to various countries. When he was waiting for a work permit for Muscat he came across an article in Time magazine about Bollywood and decided to come to India to meet Parveen Babi.

The actor of Australian origin went on to act in over 200 movies, including films like "Kaalia", "Mard", "Nastik", "Qurbani", "Mr India", "Roop Ki Rani Choron Ka Raja" and "Gumraah".

When he fell ill, all of them did call us to inquire about his health."

The actor's biography, "Flashback: My Times in Bollywood and Beyond", was to be released by Akshay Kumar in June. Bob was planning to return to Hindi films in an Akshay Kumar film. He had also signed a few South Indian movies, including one with Malayalam superstar Mohanlal.

Obituary News

Indian auteur director Mani Kaul died this morning in Delhi, aged 66, after a prolonged illness.

The nephew of well-known actor Mahesh Kaul, Mani Kaul (born Rabindranath Kaul) was one of the pioneering directors of the Indian New Wave.

He attended the Film and Television Institute of India (FTII) in Pune initially as an acting student but switched to directing. His debut feature Uski Roti caused a storm of controversy for its European art-house sensibilities and departure from Indian cinematic norms, though his works reference other classical Indian art forms.

Four times – Uski Roti, Duvidha, Ashad Ka Ek Din and Idiot -- his films won best film prizes from the Filmfare Critics juries.

He was a member of the 1971 Berlinale jury and a visiting lecturer at Harvard University as well as creative director of the Film House at Osian's Connoisseurs of Art.

A funeral will be held at 4pm this afternoon in Delhi.
