I'm afraid Bachchan is already in.

I heard rumours that SRK might play Qasim Ali.

AB is confirmed to be in Shantaram. I just hope he does a good job and doesn't make a mess. SRK is not confirmed. I've heard Chunkey Panday has a role.

Just finished reading Shantaram.

So far I think that Abdel Khader Khan's character can only be played by Amitabh successfully. But I'm not sure Johny Depp is suited to play Gregory David Roberts (he is not ugly enough).

It will be very difficult to cast other characters like Prabaker, Abdulla, Nazeer, Karla etc. because he describes the attributes of these characters too well. Too many compromises will have to be made.

Very good book... its not good enough to make one movie out of it... there has to be at least a trilogy.

Gregory David Robers is currently writing a sequel to Shantaram.

You can see bbc's HardTalk with Gregory David Roberts here:

It would've been horrible if Abhishek played the Kal Penn role. I'm glad she kept A-list bollywood actors out of this. There are alot of talented actors in India who don't act in bollywood films and they should be given a chance in international films.

Finally managed to read through this epic book, took me the best part of a month to finish it. I found it quite a fascinating story and was gripped from start till end. It’ll be interesting to see how the movie turns out. About the casting, I think Jonnhy Depp will quite easily fit the role of Lin and while I was reading I could only picture AB in the role of Adbul Kader Khan (maybe because as it’s already embedded into my mind that there’s a possibility for him to play this part). I think AB quite capable of doing justice to Adbul Kader Khan’s role.

Rajpal Yadav would make a good Prabhaker, although I don’t think Yadav’s face is round enough, but you can’t have everything. And while I was reading the book I could see John Abraham or Arjun Rampal making a very good Abdullah Taheri.

If I was an actor looking for a cameo in the movie I would be campaigning for the role of Habib, what a deadly character

Looking forward to the movie and sequel.

Was checking the Wikipedia film page for Shantaram and it lists Emily Watson (possibly Lisa) & Helena Bonham Carter (Karla) as included in the cast. Not sure where the information came from :x

randeep is the perfect abdullah imo, I can't see john/arjun in tough guy parts

they were announced as part of the cast for a long time now, though they have suddenly been removed from the imdb page so maybe something changed

Looks like Shantaram is one of the casualties in the writers’ strike happening in Hollywood at the moment. 'Delayed' until further notice by the looks of it;

The sequel entitled: The Mountain Shadow is up for pre-orders on Amazon and alikes - release date 29 Jan 2010

Quote:
A sequel to SHANTARAM but equally a standalone novel, The Mountain Shadow follows Lin on further adventures in shadowy worlds and cultures. It is a novel about seeking identity, love, meaning, purpose, home, even the secret of life...As the story begins, Lin has found happiness and love, but when he gets a call that a friend is in danger, he has no choice but to go to his aid, even though he knows that leaving this paradise puts everything at risk, including himself and his lover. When he arrives to fulfil his obligation, he enters a room with eight men: each will play a significant role in the story that follows. One will become a friend, one an enemy, one will try to kill Lin, one will be killed by another...Some characters appeared in Shantaram, others are introduced for the first time, including Navida Der, a half-Irish, half-Indian detective, and Edras, a philosopher with fundamental beliefs. Gregory David Roberts is an extraordinarily gifted writer whose stories are richly rewarding on many levels. Like Shantaram, The Mountain Shadow will be a compelling adventure story with a profound message at its heart.

No sign of the film though.

Has anyone managed to get hold of The Mountain Shadow book? Was meant to release (maybe limited) on 4 Feb 2010 - play.com says it's in stock, so I've placed an order but I'm not sure that is correct as no place else seems to have it.

Bah! to answer my own question looks like a gaff on play.com - Wiki info says

"according to Amazon.com the novel will not be available until September 2010." - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shantaram_ ... d_prequels

And Gregory David Roberts updated http://www.shantaram.com/ in January 2010.

Quote:
I’ll check in again in about 2 months to this website. I’m in the final stages of the writing of the sequel to Shantaram, and if I’m to have it in the hands of my publishers this year, I have to use every minute that I can.

So no book yet.
