The film lacks focus to the central story and concentrates on unnecessary and unrealistic political drama for the first hour or so. But once we get to the crux of the central tale, it's very enjoyable albeit predictable too. Vidya and Amitabh are first rate, and Abhishek is decent too.
The potty jokes may be a bit much for some, but that scene with both ABs in the car is a classic.
On a side note, I have no idea what the director was thinking to accomplish by having Jaya Bachchan read the opening credits for us. That was annoying.

I don't know if it's fair to accuse
Paa of having a "central story" from which to deviate. It could be Auro's tale, or Amol and Vidya's, or Amol's, or Auro and his family's, ....
As I said, to me, the scene in which Amol "takes on" the press (via DoorDarshan) isn't very great, but, otherwise, I didn't at all mind the film's handling of his professional life.
The "potty-jokes" worked well for me, as they very much presented that phase of the male life. Kids (boys, at least) often talk about feces and their asses, nonstop — the movie used this effectively and with charm to characterize Auro.
I agree about Jaya Bhaduri's somewhat odd involvement with the opening credits...
