I understand what you're saying, but, as I see it, there's nothing wrong with having sex -- it's something people (hell, animals) do. What's important is to prevent spreading illness when you do have sex, and condoms are about the most effective way to do so; in my opinion, then, it's good people are carrying them around.

The film lacks focus to the central story and concentrates on unnecessary and unrealistic political drama for the first hour or so. But once we get to the crux of the central tale, it's very enjoyable albeit predictable too. Vidya and Amitabh are first rate, and Abhishek is decent too.
The potty jokes may be a bit much for some, but that scene with both ABs in the car is a classic.
On a side note, I have no idea what the director was thinking to accomplish by having Jaya Bachchan read the opening credits for us. That was annoying.

7/10

I don't know if it's fair to accuse Paa of having a "central story" from which to deviate. It could be Auro's tale, or Amol and Vidya's, or Amol's, or Auro and his family's, ....

As I said, to me, the scene in which Amol "takes on" the press (via DoorDarshan) isn't very great, but, otherwise, I didn't at all mind the film's handling of his professional life.

The "potty-jokes" worked well for me, as they very much presented that phase of the male life. Kids (boys, at least) often talk about feces and their asses, nonstop — the movie used this effectively and with charm to characterize Auro.

I agree about Jaya Bhaduri's somewhat odd involvement with the opening credits...

He's been posting in the hi-def forum about how he's going to leech this film when it's available on a 1080p Rip.....

I know how that is: I used to watch almost every film; now, I see maybe a few a year. If I may, I highly recommend (if you find the time) you watch Paa in the theater — "on-line viewing" probably can't do it justice.

Hey, despite her odd presence in Paa, let's not knock Jaya Bhaduri: she's immensely talented and has done some brilliant work (even opposite Amitabh Bachchan, I sometimes feel she stole the show in Abhimaan).

My two pennies worth on Paa - it's good, not amazing. Although I liked the main story (which I thought had some shades of Kaash, with the parents getting together for their child), I found the second half, in particular, to be a little too emotionally manipulative, and for that reason, I found it hard to be moved by the film. I also felt progeria could have been looked at in a little more depth - as the film stands, the only reason for including the issue in the film is so that Amitabh Bachchan could play Abhishek's son (which is what the film was sold on as far as I could see).

AB Sr was good as Auro, AB Jr's 'dude' act didn't really work for me. If one thing did blow me away in this film, it was Vidya Balan. Thank God she's gone back to doing proper roles after crap like Heyy Baby.

Bhaskar's notes on Kaash - which I still cherish in DVD collection - got me thinking of another great past film similar to Paa. Mani Ratnam's Anjali is one of my favourites, and though I watched it in dubbed version in the nineties, it had me weeping buckets and cheering it on in all the right moments. It too was emotionally manipulative, yes, but great film-making, too? Absolutely.
