Dev.D is an upcoming Indian Hindi language romantic drama film due for release on February 6, 2009. Written and directed by Anurag Kashyap, the film is a modern day take on Sarat Chandra Chattopadhyay's classic novel Devdas. The film was conceived by Abhay Deol, and then worked upon by Kashyap and its producer is Ronnie Screwvala.

Anurag Kashyap's blog has a few titbits on the Dev.D and it's conception

http://passionforcinema.com/author/anurag/

Quote:
It was during the FIFA world cup 2006. I was at the Mariott watching a match, Abhay was with me. The match wasn’t happening. He told me he had an idea, a story. I said ,”ok tell me”. He narrated me a story of a stripper in a L A strip club and a guy who is attracted to her. The guy had a back story, an unrealised love story. After he narrated the whole story, he asked me guess what is it. I couldn’t. He then told me it is Devdas. I looked at him. I never thought before that moment, that Devdas could be retold like that. That was where Dev.D was born.

Dev.D- genesis

Dev.D-Genesis 2(Happy Accidents)

Dev.D- The Look and the style

Dev.D- When me and Abhay fought.

The movie promotions are definately very novel and nothing like one has seen before. Condoms packaged along with invitations for the premiere, sex phone lines etc. Even a couple of the TV promos are quite racy in their dialogue. TO top itall there is the video of the 'X' rated version of the song "Emosanal Atyachaar". I have a very strong feeling that it too has been released by the 'Dev. D' team. The overall quality of the song is absolutely top notch, as if professionally done. To me even the singer sounds the same as the original and ofcourse the fact that the guy who did the video had access to all those scenes from the film even before it's released.

For those who have not seen the video and are curious, here is a link: http://passionforcinema.com/emosonal-at ... ed-version

WARNING: The lyrics are extremely excplicit, vulgar & crude, but strangely enough it's just what a bunch of teenage/college kids would come up with. I suppose we already know which audience Anurag Kashyap is targetting.

A bit risky considering his first film didn't make it past censor boards (Paanch, which is still yet to see the day of light outside film festivals) and it took him years before Black Friday got a release. I wonder if the Indian censors will kick a fuss over Dev.D.

According to Indiafm, Dev D releases tomorrow - so maybe it has already passed through censors?

Raja Sen of rediff.com, gives it 3.5 stars while for the very first time that I can remember, Nikhat Kazmi in the Times Of India, gives it 5 out 5 stars. Personally I'd take anyone's opinion over 'MORON' Adarsh.
