Great news! I hope this set is at least as good as their release of the Apu trilogy. Or should I hold out for a Criterion edition...

Good news indeed.
I hope that the subtitles will be better than those on the Apu-DVDs.

Volume 1 looks sweet - Charulata is an absolute must and i cant wait to replace my bootleg copy.

BIG to distribute 'Ray film' DVDs

Close on the heels of its recent appointment as the exclusive home video licensee for Warner Home Video, Universal Pictures International and Paramount Home Entertainment, BIG Home Entertainment has announced another landmark acquisition. Reliance Big Entertainment's BIG Home Video is all set to market and distribute 10 movies made by the legendary film-maker Satyajit Ray.
Memorable films like ‘Teen Kanya’, ‘Kapurush O Mahapurush’, ‘Nayak’ etc. will now be readily available through the BIG Home Video label. The other titles include ‘Goopy Gyne Bagha Byne’, ‘Jai Baba Felunath’, ‘Debi’, ‘Charulata’, ‘Sakha Prasakha’, ‘Koilashe Kelenkari’ and ‘Bakshya Rahashya’.

With this acquisition, Big Home Video makes its significant presence in the premium segment of Bengali Home Video market. This announcement comes soon after the company's recent acquisition of a Bengali music company.


Kailashe Kelenkari isn't strictly a Satyajit Ray film by the way - it's directed by his son, Sandip Ray.

I hope these are good quality. Any word on release dates? I hope Teen Kanya will be the full version.

Big have already released a couple of Bengali DVDs, not seen any of them though, so can't comment on quality. I'm not expecting a huge amount from the Ray DVDs to be honest, the DVDs released in India so far aren't amazing quality. I'll be in India at the end of the year though, so will pick some of these up and post shots.

Bollywood Films seems to have released Nayak on DVD (http://bollydvd.net/newprdtls.asp?prid=2521&langid=0). Could anyone tell me about the quality of this DVD?
