Saw this poster of Akshay Kumar eating noodles with chopsticks, a Chinese Conical cap on his head... Looked interesting.
Chandni Chowk To China / Chandni Chowk to ChinaTown -- being distributed in India by Warner Bros India. Also starring Deepika Padukone as "Meow Meow" in a story about a simple cook from Chandni Chowk mistaken for the reincarnation of an ancient peasant warrior Liu Shengh by residents of an oppressed Chinese village.

I hear the one and only Gordon Liu is in this thing. He of the "36 Chambers of Shaolin" fame.

The screen shots look horrible. Are the screenshots an indication of the kind of quality to expect from the Warner Blu-Ray/DVD? In my opinion Warner is the poorest when it comes to the quality of Blu-Rays and DVDs, from amongst all the major hollywood studios. This is specially true when it comes to the audio quality.

Now let's see, 'Kung Fu Panda' released June 6th, 2008. While, 'Chandni Chowk To China' launched in August, 2007, then titled 'Made in China'. Movie was retitled as 'Chandni Chowk In China' in December, 2007 and principal shooting began in January 2008, that is even before work on 'Kung Fu Panda' was finished. Hmm... I think either Nikhil Advani has a major spy at Dreamworks or this film has nothing to do with 'Kung Fu Panda'. Also, I seriously doubt that Warner would allow such a blatant copyright infringement to happen and that too so soon after the release of the original work. Dreamworks would sue the pants off Warner in the US, something that Warner is I am sure well versed with.

initial news is that the movie's a flop!
some fans seem to be saying that akshay kumar's made it a drag.

Meanwhile, a review in The Hindu newspaper says this is based on the Malayalam film Yoddha a.k.a. Yodha http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0290937/ -- which itself was based on the English film The Golder Child?

I saw the film yesterday. Now this is not the kind of film, a film with Akshay Kumar and one that seems to be on the lines of all the inane bollywood so called comedies that he works in, that I would normally go to see in a theater, but then I got suckered in by a friend and thus had to go. Anyhow, my take on the film, it's not that bad actually. While I could not sit through 'super hit' film like 'Singh is Kingg', 'Golmaal', 'Golmaal Returns', 'Welcome', 'Hey Babby' etc. etc. etc., Chandni Chowk To China I did not mind watching, and it is definately far better than all of the afore mentioned films. Akshay Kumar, is actually one of the saving graces of the film, while the music is definately the weakest part. Deepika Padukone does a fair job and looks far more pleasing to the eye than she did in 'Om Shanti Om'. Ofcourse there are moments in the film which made me cringe due to the total innanity of the attempted humour. There are also times when I seriously wondered if the film was meant for the IQ level of 2-3 yr olds and at the same time there are moments in the film which made me wonder why the film was not rated 'Adults only' (R rated) due to the graphic violence. When will bollywood learn to make a film actually fit to be watched by the 'whole family'. A few scenes are totally inexcusable, considering that the whole marketing of the film has been to promote it as a 'family' film. The film is also a bit too long and could do with some re-editing.

Bottom line, all in all the film is quite watchable inspite of it's failings. My take on why it will not do well at the box office, it is just not stupid enough or vulgar and crude enough for the audience that made the above mentioned films such huge hits.

Boxoffice numbers:

India: 33 Crores
USA: $700,000
UK (Awaiting numbers)
Middle East, and others??

So far so good. Also so much for Rediff's jumping to conclusions "Disaster" (Why do Indian papers make up verdicts)??
