It says that in India Devdas has been sold for 3 crore rupees per territory, the music has been sold for 12.5 crores and the overseas rights have been sold for more than 10 crore rupees. The cost of the movie is 50 crore rupees. It has almos t recovered its cost for the producers ( 27 crores from Indian territories, 10 crores or more from overseas, and 12.5 crores form songs, that makes it 49.5 crores). By the way K3G has made 67 crores and Gadar 68 crores. These were the most successful films. Lagaan apparently made 37 crores. All this information was in the same article about Devdas.

Q. How did Devdas happen? A. Sanjay Bhansali approached me three years ago with a proposal and script. His conviction that he wouldn’t go ahead with the projewct if I were not a part of it touched me. I have great faith in him because he is one of the most sensible and sensitive directors in the film industry today. His dedication and eye for detail are very rare virtues.

Q. What was your brief? A. Bhansali's brief about Devdas was not about a character but an expression of various shades of love, A lover who gives up his life for love but could not put it across.

Q. What is your interpretation of Devdas? A. Devdas represents the convoluted element in every man. He is juvenile, spoilt, brash and psychotic.

Q. What is it about this character that attracted you most? A. What is attractive about him is that he shows that love is more beautiful when selfish. I think that is touching: every man wants to be selfish in love and every woman wants to be loved and possessed.

Q. How did you prepare to play the legendary character? A. I play Devdas, the metaphor and not the character. I play it the Clark Gable Wsay in Gone with the Wind. The focus was not on what to do but what not to do as Devdas. My hero is very childlike - he makes mistakes and then regrets it later. He is Das of Paro and Devta of Chandramukhi. In short he is an icon of love, a supreme slave. I feel that is why he has never died. He is a timeless love god. I have portrayed this basic instinct of mankind.

Q. Did you meet with Dilip Kumar and see the previous versions of the film? A. I saw both the earlier versions. Sehgal and Dilipsaab were awesome. I met Dilipsaab to ask him how he had prepared for the film. He said he did it because he wanted the money and the role was good too. Today, people would say Dilipsaab underplayed the character. I see him as a quiet hero.

Q. What is at stake for you here? A. I have played various characters but it is Shah Rukh Khan playing it. My identity is firmly embossed on them. I would like to be called as a "serious star." Success or failure of a film does not change that fact. Devdas will be yet another milestone in my work. My lifelong ambition has been to get the recognition that Clark Gable did. Devdas, I hope, will help achieve that.

Madhuri Dixit in Devdas. Excerpts:

Q. What is your take on Devdas?

A. Ever since I saw Mughal-E-Azam, I dreamt about dancing like Madhubala in a classic shish mahal. Finally, it happened. My dream came true when I walked into a gigantic and gorgeous set of Devdas at the Film City. Although I was to play the courtesan Chandramukhi, I felt like a queen. Devdas to me is what it was to Madhubala: a golden moment. A great landmark.

Q. But you retracted after you agreed to do the film?

A. I nearly didn't do the film. I got married after the story was narrated to me. Bhansali was a bit skeptical about a married Madhuri doing it. But it happened because it was destined to happen. I was thrilled even though I was not playing the central character.

Q. What was your brief to play Chandramukhi's character?

A. Chandramukhi to me is a poignant person and a selfless lover who always gives but gets nothing in return. What I like the most was that in Bhansali’s interpretation, a new aspect of her mysterious personality unfolds every time she appears on the screen. She leaves that bittersweet feeling every time she exits.

Q. How was it to work with Bhansali?

A. Every moment, every little gesture in the film is so memorable that I am glad that I finally did it. He had approached me for Khamoshi but I cold not do it. All the shooting schedules were at night (the 10 pm to 7am shift) and I felt that I did the film in my dream.

Q. How did you prepare for the role?

A. After it was decided that I would play Chandramukhi, I saw the earlier two films and I realised that this version was different and more challenging. Like dancing in a 30 kg ghaghra. I initially thought I couldn’t stand in it but I actuallygot to do it. It was a tough task. When I wanted to stop swirling, my ghaghra would not stop.

Excerpts from an interview with Aishwarya Rai:

Q. How did you get the role? A. My real journey began three years ago when Sanjay Bhansali read out the script to me at midnight in a hotel room. At the end of it, we both cried. I instantly knew that I was going to be Parvati.

Q. What did you like about Parvati's character? A. What attracted me was that Parvati's childlike- fragile emotion and silent conviction. She was so strong and ahead of her times. A very dignified and graceful character.

Q. What's your take on the film? A. I lived Parvati's life on the Devdas set for more than 30 months - it was creatively satisfying and a lifetime experience. It was an effortless performance on my part. My brief was to portray the torrential aspect of love.

Q. What do you make of the Devdas-Parvati type of love? A. Parvati and Devdas go through a cyclical journey of love and pain that shatters each of these characters and yet in a strange way it grows deeper and stronger. The journey is not conflicting but complementing each other. It beautifies the pain of these lovers. I treasure each and every moment of my participation in the film. It has elevated my performance.

Q. How was it to work with Bhansali again? A. We share a symbiotic relationship. Bhansali doesn't have to instruct me with words but look at me and the message is conveyed. In the last scene I had to stand on one leg with one pot on my head, while another was in my hand. I was holding a heavy lantern that was getting warmer with each passing second. Another foot had a thorn. The shot took longer than usual and I was in pain but anything for Sanjay Leela Bhansali is less. He is a very demanding director but it i or the betterment of cinema.

Q. What do you expect from Devdas? A. I joined the film industry to make a mark and move on. I have reached a stage where I can afford to make choices. With a director like Bhansali you know every effort will eventually pay heavy dividends, perhaps even immortalize characters in the history of Indian cinema.
