Starring Abhishek Bachchan, Priyanka Chopra and John Abraham, the new DOSTANA (Dharma Productions') hits theatres in November 2008. Remake...? Can't say for sure.

Dostana
http://specials.rediff.com/movies/2008/aug/26sli1.htm

The players: Abhishek Bachchan, John Abraham, Priyanka Chopra and Bobby Deol.

The maker: Tarun Mansukhani

The plot: Two guys (Bachchan, Abraham), a girl (Chopra), living under one roof in Miami. Complications arise when the girl develops a crush on one of them. Only he likes him better than her.

Pros: It's a trendy, young-looking rom-com shot in the land of bikini and beaches -- Miami.

Cons: The audience might feel tired of seeing Priyanka in so many films, one after another, this year (Golden bikini, notwithstanding). Also, it's a tricky subject, which will definitely bound to.

Release date: November 14.

I saw the trailer in 2K DLP.
Spoiler: No one gay in this film. (This is mass entertainer Bollywood!). Abraham just pretends to be gay so Priyanka turns to Abhishek instead.

Very entertaining and funny! Like most audience members, I was worried about excessive skin show - I do think John needs to tone it down though seriously - and non-stop sermons on acceptance and tolerance, but that was not the case. It was laugh out loud funny, and had great performances from AB Jr, Priyanka, Kirron Kher, John and Boman.

Don't think that older generations or villages will like it much, but our cinema was packed with teens, college kids and young couples. And everyone seemed to be having a blast.

At the end of the day, the film really is about friendship, and it's got a great, light and fast pace. Tarun's good at quick editing and using songs to help further the story. (Though I gotta admit that Desi Girl was shoved in there and didn't gel with the narrative. Lucky for us, Priyanka looked smoking and the song is a riot.)

If Priyanka keeps this up - she looks superhot and does a great understated performance - she'll be Number one in no time. And AB Jr may be this generation's Govinda.

Hadn't seen a good Hindi comedy in and Tarun will hopefully continue to impress with good films in the future.

DOSTANA
A PINK BOMBAY DUCK WILL ALWAYS BE A LAME DUCK IF IT IS BORN LAME

Director: Tarun Mansukhani
Producer: Karan Johar
Music: Vishal Dadlani, Shekhar Ravjian
Genre: Romance
Review By: Dr Usman Khawaja

Review
This is a an exasperatingly extroverted gay romcom from the limited imagination of Karan Johar who has decided fit to take every funny joke regarding drag queens, homosexuals and straight women called fag hags and put it incoherently together in a malicious plagiarized version of Larry and Chuck get married.
.
It will be of no use to try to remind Bollywood that it is no problem being gay but it is a crime to be unimaginative and make sheer trashy comic enterprises out of Hollywood blunders and doubly so with crude and vulgar double entendres regarding both Indians and homosexuals.

This extroverted moronic piece is how 2 men of Indian origin in Miami pretend to be gay romantics to rent a room in an Indian Sindhi family household and that heralds this lunatic comic caper. One of the men is a supermodel with a pumped up ass and biceps with an underdeveloped torso called John Abraham and the other is the pretender drag queen as Abishek Bachchan who has clearly studied every act from the Indian community of hijras (Eunuch) as he plays a modern Indian gay man.

The whole exercise is a torture and a pain in the ass itself as they leave no opportunity to hump each other’s asses at any time and everything from their Cadillac to scarf to underwear is pink.

It gets redeemed slightly by Priyanka Chopra who gives the only credible performance as the girl they both fall in love with, but she is sabotaged by an awful Punjabi mum who has become branded as the worst mum in Bollywoods living memory-Kiron Kher and here she is singing a song in Punjabi too on south beach Miami while giving us a eye popping tour of the art deco resort.

Even worst is Bobby Deol as the lame duck who gets to be a real turkey, emerging as the only straight guy in this world who starts pretending to be gay because he is convinced by the 2 gay boys that women are attracted to effeminate drag queens who wear the outfits only Posh Spice wears.

Yashraj movies use everything from erstwhile hits to make this work from a gay reworking of the beedi song from the great Omkara to the fabled Gabbar from Sholay, Yash Raj are intellectually bankrupt as they actually have recycled half their movies from Kuch Kuch Hota Haie to Kabhi Khushi Kabhi Gham in a desperate effort to make a comedy work but it is in the worst possible taste and could not be rescued by any footage whether shot in Venice or in Miami.

Priyanka should keep away from this trash, as she is pretty and a decent actress who proved her mettle in the excellent fashion recently. As for John Abraham and Abhishek Bachchan they are so contrived that I do not care what they do as long as they do not dance in future as this movie has the most unimaginatively violent and ugly choreography I have seen in a Bollywood epic with the two of them waltzing in a tuxedo on a beach in Venice.

A gay romcom with moronic monsters playing caricatures and a tasteless sordid script with jokes about g sexual positions making this a modern day Yashraj guide to the gay Indian Punjabi Kama Sutra experience. Disgusting and Dreadful.

Rating: HALF STAR

I saw this and was somewhat disappointed. Johar should've known better. I know that they were trying to sneak in a few progressive elements to the depiction of gays on screen but ultimately the film chose the route of REALLY doing up the gay stereotyping as opposed to giving us a more realistic portrayal. Granted with this kind of plotting stolen straight from CHUCK AND LARRY nothing should be a surprise. There were also not one but two references from Johar's past hits (the K3G parody was spot on however). And the songs were catchy with "Shut Up & Bounce" being particularly good. This film was more a missed opportunity than anything.

as usual, what else would you expect from Gay Johar who is not able to live out of closet openly, he started and progressed through this team, and very soon you will watch a heart warming BROKEBACk MOUNTAIN from him, with his partner Sarook acting as Sr Gay!

I think this film despite hot/happening gay fun, will do well. Teen agers who made NA JAANE TOU CLASSIC

and I have been hugely irritated by Priyanka, she does look better under Gay Johar's Batan.

Watched this today, gotta say not very good at all. The "one" joke of them being gay gets tired very quicky, the movie is all style and no substance. What's happened to Deol? the guy is so stiff (acting wise!) it's painful to look at. Joe Abraham can't keep his clothes on and the whole movie is best forgotten.

Dostana is injuriously entertaining

Raja Sen | November 14, 2008 11:30 IST

It's just that when one of the most successful movie studios in the country makes a film with two mainstream actors pretending to be gay, you would like a little more than good-looking fun presented predictably on a plate. Not that there's anything wrong with that, of course.

Dostana [Images] is exactly as you'd expect from the trailers. Shilpa Shetty [Images] pops up wearing a bikini, Priyanka Chopra makes Neal'N'Nikki leftovers look very good indeed, and John Abraham's [Images] bottom plays a starring role. In between, there's a plot cobbled from I Now Pronounce You Chuck And Larry, and a surprisingly broad Jhoom Barabar Jhoom feel given to Abhishek Bachchan [Images], who inevitably does much better this time around.

*

Yet for all its potentially paisa-vasool assets, Tarun Mansukhani's debut film is a crucial blunder. Making an entire film out of Kal Ho Naa Ho's Kantaben joke was always going to be a stretch, and while the male stars earn applause by throwing themselves this heartily into a risky project, it ends up as a shamefully regressive film.

We in India haven't yet matured to sensitive, normalised portrayals of homosexuality, and this film continues to paint them as freaks of nature. John and Abhishek play a couple of decidedly homophobic straight men pretending to be gay, and every other gay character in the film is a complete, flamin' caricature. It isn't wrong to show a stereotypically effeminate man, of course, but to make absolutely no attempt to balance this is to damage an already-fragile mindset.

The problem then is that the film is genuinely entertaining, albeit very obvious, in a way that it is likely to be a smash hit and reach millions of people -- setting the gay rights movement in India back at least a decade. Sigh. Nobody expected a Brokeback Mountain, but a dollop or two of perspective tossed in the middle of all the item songs and bling wouldn't hurt now, would it?

There are a couple of deft moments, sure. Kirron Kher, playing Bachchan's mother, earnestly hams her way through a scene where she makes John cross the threshold of the house, like a new bride. The muscled actor does so gleefully, knowing how embarrassed Abhishek would be, after which Kher blesses the couple, and candidly admits she doesn't know which of them is bride and which is groom. It's a nice little candid aside on the unpreparedness of an older generation, on their need to label and their unfamiliarity with these newfangled sexual dynamics.

*

Speaking of sexual dynamics, there's a considerable amount on display here in terms of Priyanka Chopra's [Images] dresses. Not that we're complaining one bit. The actress looks screen-scorchingly hot, and while there is a skimpiness overkill, we're too busy staring to make an issue out of it. She looks refreshingly at ease after a series of overdone roles, and her on-screen enjoyment is natural and fun. And did I mention those legs? Lord.

Meanwhile, John Abraham is clearly at ease grooving to songs originally made iconic by his girlfriend. He's also evidently enjoying being the new Salman Khan [Images], showing off more chest than a Bigg Boss contestant and demonstrating a loathing for shirt buttons. Again, he too seems to be having a good time, and that's the best possible thing to happen for an on-screen bunch. He's much easier in front of the camera now, and he makes the flimsily written character rather likeable.

Abhishek is the pick of the actors, no doubt about it. Called on to play an over-the-top pink-loving straight man -- who seems far too interested in pretending to be gay -- Bachchan does a spot on job as he stays over the top and ends up being a pretty enjoyable buffoon. Clearly an actor who likes getting under the skin of his character, this is a role that calls for much self-deprecation and embarrassment, and Bachchan embraces them quite well.

The plot could have used at least a tad of work, though. While I admit that this film is better than Chuck And Larry -- which is rank unwatchable, so let's not pop open the bubbly just yet -- the plotholes are too massive, really. Two single guys in Miami [Images] decide to share a flat and pretend they're gay? What's the point of the stunning pad if you can't bring women over in the first place? And after agreeing to tell their flatmate Priyanka that they are gay, they spend all their time flapping their wrists in front of her and forget all their womanising ways?

Overall, it's an average piece of fluff -- but one of the most hideously insensitive things to come out of Bollywood in a long while. Boman Irani shouldn't have played the part he does, and Karan Johar [Images] shouldn't have let this film turn out the way it has.

This film is a joke; but the last thing we need is India thinking homosexuality's just another gag.
