Oh boy! A stickler for details, eh! Ah well it's corrected as per the TITLE. By the way this symbol ( " ) is an apostrophe and is usually used in a quote, whereas the symbol ( ' ) is used to indicate a missing letter or letters as when shortening a word or phrase.

— it probably follows that Americans are more inclined to write it "D", as we use double–quotation-marks for almost everything.

As when you guys stick your index and middle finger of both hands to your head and wagged them to indicate a quote on quote? By the way I ain't no American! 8)

btw, it's (') that's an apostrophe, not (")
both are used as quotation marks.

Actually they are both apostrohpe but have distinctive uses! Like I said ( ' ) to indicate missing letter and ( " ) is indicative when quoting a phrase or word of someone . See link below

(') is used to denote a missing letter, as in (it's) instead of (it is); it is also used as a quotation mark. Plus to denote possessiveness.

(") is only used as a quotation mark.

I don't think (") is called an apostrophe. http://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/apostrophe does not say that (") is an apostrophe, does it...?

Even http://dictionary.reference.com/browse/apostrophe indicates that only (') is an apostrophe, not (").

Am.. before we go off on a tangent here, the subject is the MOVIE " D " or the MOVIE 'D' whichever tickle your fancy! Nonetheless, and you seem to be a bright guy, I have no disagreement with this part of your statement ( Oh geez! and I hope I'm using the correct aposthrope here) I'm in agreement with your statement

(') is used to denote a missing letter, as in (it's) instead of (it is)
(") is only used as a quotation mark."

You know at this point I should kick myself in the arse for opening this can of worms.

Lastly, Why would Webster give this http://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/apostrophe? check again. Shit off to hibernation again!

True :-) I agree with you abt the main subject of the topic.
But am curious because I don't remember anyone calling (") an apostrophe.
At the link, apostrophe has another meaning:
Quote:
: the addressing of a usually absent person or a usually personified thing rhetorically <Carlyle's “O Liberty, what things are done in thy name!” is an example of apostrophe>
Here, it's not (") that they are calling an apostrophe, but the "addressing of the absent personified thing."

Apostrophes, which I'm not sure how to represent here, indicate omission; on-line, one usually sees hash-marks used in their place. In America, quotation marks are almost always double; singles are used, really, just when quoting something inside a quotation.
