Every single review I have read of the Saawariya Blu-Ray disk has termed the video quality no less than reference quality and most have ranked the quality with 2-3 best blu-ray disks ever made. WOW. This I have to see for myself, an Indian film in such quality.

If the HD comes from the DI and the DI is good quality and the conversion too you get a very good looking BD. Unfortunately the DIs in India are not always good and they are usually tossed anyway once the negative is filmed out. So the HD comes from scanning the negative (or worse) again. This does not yield superior quality.
As simple as that.
There are more good DIs of Indian films but that they have been stored properly I doubt for most cases. I would like to see the HD from DI of "Rang de Basanti". That was good looking material.

I am hoping for the best and expect for the studios to do the best whether they use the DI or scan the negatives. In either case edge enhancement is a no-no for HD as people watch it on larger screens. The screens will get larger and larger as time goes on.

Even the negatives are scanned, a good job can be done if time and effort goes into it and sound advice is available to manage the transfer process well.

One of the good examples is "2001: A Space Odyssey" made in 1968 and released on blu-ray recently. I don't think they had DI at that time and I expect this to be a scan of the negative.

One of the issues I noticed in this transfer is slight (I mean slight) edge enhancement. (This is no way near Veer-Zaara edge enhancement which ruined that Yash Raj DVD.) I have seen in other forums people complaining about this slight edge enhancement.

I would recommend you checking and studing Saawariya in the mean time! I just put my rental bluray to spin and dvd is amazing!!!!

Colors are a tad too saturated, for my taste, picture a bit too dark, but might be tweak able.. 8)

I won't be studying Saawariya. I am more keen on representing the original DPX files of Sivaji for the blu-ray encode.
It will set the standard for all Indian blu-ray...and I'm keen on keeping it high.

Are you referring to the Blu-Ray disk or the DVD of Saawariya?
