London, 10 March 2008: In a major mainstream DVD distribution breakthrough, Eros International announced its collaboration with the retail giant, Wal-Mart, to sell Bollywood content through Wal-Mart's distribution network in Canada.
Eros DVDs will be available in 27 Wal-Mart stores in Canada to start with. The distribution will subsequently be extended to the entire Canadian Wal-Mart network.

AIM, London Stock Exchange listed Eros is one of the leading players in the Indian media and entertainment sector. Over time, Eros will make available through Wal-Mart a large number of titles from its catalogue of over 1300 titles as well as its 30-40 new releases every year. The Eros-Wal-Mart tie-up will give Bollywood an extensive reach to both Asian and Non-Asian market sectors in Canada.
Ken Naz, President –USA, Eros International, commented:

“Bollywood as an entertainment category is growing rapidly internationally. Canada is a very important market for us for cinema as well as DVD distribution. We are very excited to be working with Wal-Mart in Canada as it will enable widespread availability of quality DVDs at affordable prices to consumers.

An interesting new business venture for Eros. It leads to bag a few questions; will eros move towards the improvment of product packaging now that it'll be more widely available? What will eros do about quality deficiency of their DVD?

With the case of the latter question, chances are Eros will likely feel the pressure of the poor efforts they've put into their older DVDs. Unlike before where the middle-man was your local Indian DVD store, now Eros has to deal with customer who might possibly complain through a reputated retail outlet.

Wal-mart aka Asda in the UK, together with other major supermarket have been selling Eros DVDs(together with any other Bollywood labels here, Spark, TipTop, GVI, etc) for while now - so the answer to both the questions is a NO :D

But Ali, does the UK retailer honour returns on defective products?

Walmart is really good with giving you a refund in North America if the product quality is bad, so Eros may suffer in this regard if they start getting piles of returns. The unknown is whether the buyers of these discs from Walmart will exercise their rights to return in the product is bad. Moreover, will this concept succeed here given the high proliferation of cheap pirated product in Canada? Only time will tell.

Went to Wal-Mart today (which is something I rarely do) and walked by their electronics department and found the section devoted to "Bollywood DVDs" and noticed the prices are much cheaper (no surprise) than what one would pay at a local Desi DVD store. In one case, I've noticed a cheaper price than online shopping but most were comparable to online prices.

BTW, (off topic) I've noticed that Wal-Mart is also now carrying Indian women suits, not much of a variety, but prices ranged around $80 a suit.

why is walmart evil? the offer you a service, and they are good at what they are doing. why bash someone that is succesful? :p

eros on the other hand, offer you a poor service, a total disservice to society.
