I read that earlier - they are also rumoured to have two Blu-ray players coming out in Sept 08.

Wal-Mart to officially discontinue HD DVD sales by June

Posted Feb 15th 2008 11:39AM by Joshua Topolsky
Filed under: HDTV

With HD DVD, things are just going from bad, to really bad, to worse, to car-crash-you-can't-stop-looking-at. You can file this one under that latter category, as Wal-Mart has officially announced its intentions to stop stocking HD DVD players and movies by June. According to reports, the retailer came to the decision after Netflix and Best Buy made announcements concerning their position in the HD format war. Susan Chronister of Wal-Mart wrote on the company's blog, "By June Wal-Mart will only be carrying Blu-ray movies and hardware machines, and of course standard-def movies, DVD players, and up-convert players." Susan went on to deliver what we consider a total burn by adding, "if you bought the HD [DVD] player like me, I'd retire it to the bedroom, kid's playroom, or give it to your parents to play their John Wayne standard-def movies, and make space for a BD player." Look, we're not gonna say that this is it for HD DVD, but... uh, it doesn't look real great.

[Thanks to everyone who sent this in]

Sigmatek's European SBR-1000 player does Blu-ray cheaper

Posted Feb 15th 2008 8:01AM by Richard Lawler
Filed under: HDTV, Home Entertainment

Sigmatek is joining the legion of Blu-ray manufacturers with its newest player, the SBR-1000. Coming in at a price of under €250 ($364), it'll be the cheapest Blu-ray player available in Europe -- compared to the €369 ($537) BDP-S300 -- when it launches in April. We're assuming this player supports at least Profile 1.1 / Bonus View features, to go along with the confirmed 1080p/24, Dolby Digital Plus, Dolby TrueHD and HDMI 1.3 support. The low price is credited to Sony and Nichia's new cheaper blue laser, which should lead to similar new price floors here in the U.S. sooner rather than later.

New research insists that format war stalemate remains alive

Posted Feb 15th 2008 11:22AM by Darren Murph
Filed under: Industry, Blu-ray, HD DVD, Players

Here's a timely one. Just days after one reader in particular voiced his concerns about now being the right time to choose one format to support, along comes research claiming that the stalemate is still on. The new data was gathered from over 2,000 online shoppers in mid-January (read: after Warner's blockbuster decision), and apparently, 63-percent of those polled indicated that "they plan to wait to make a purchasing decision until one format leads the market." Potentially more interesting, however, was the note that some 56-percent of participants stated that "they would purchase a Blu-ray Disc player if they saw significant price drops," though just about 40-percent of folks said they didn't anticipate "purchasing any high definition product in the near future." Food for thought, sure, but don't go taking these results too seriously, okay?

PARAMOUNT CONFIRMS RUMOR:

It's true: Steven Spielberg has determined himself to releasing "Indiana Jones 4" in a Blu-ray High-definition version. There was no information regarding a simultaneous release coming to HD-DVD. No release date was given.

At Paramount's Northern Presentation in Goteborg last week managing director Magnus Hollo confirmed that Paramount is supporting HD-DVD exclusively and that all movies this year will be coming to this format. Immediate after a presentation from Alison Casey from the analysis bureau "Understandings & Solutions", she repeated the assessment made last year that Blu-ray will win. Her projection says HD-DVD will vanish in 2009. She indicated that it might even happen sooner.

TOKYO (Reuters) - Toshiba Corp (6502.T: Quote, Profile, Research) is planning to give up on its HD DVD format for high-definition video, conceding defeat to the competing Blu-Ray technology backed by Sony Corp (6758.T: Quote, Profile, Research), a company source said on Saturday.

Japanese public broadcaster NHK had earlier reported that Toshiba would suffer losses in the tens of billions of yen (hundreds of millions of dollars) as it scrapped production of HD DVD players and recorders and took other steps to exit the business.

The company source told Reuters that Toshiba was in the final stages of planning to exit the HD DVD business and that an official decision would be made soon.

Digitalbits is reporting that:

On that note, we've suddenly begun hearing from retail sources that Paramount Blu-ray titles have just begin appearing in their inventory software as "on order" or "available for pre-order," including Blades of Glory and Transformers. Yes, you read that right.
