A very special thanks to Arsh for getting these screen shots – here are the screen shots from the ‘official’ First Look Home Entertainment DVD and for the record the disc is exactly the same as the previously ‘Erroneous’ edition DVD (only difference is slight changes to the cover as mentioned before);

Only outstanding issue left is this one from DVD Empire that has removable English and Malaysian subtitles (one that socas has) – does anyone else have this or is this a mystery DVD? I was going to put a review of this official version just for reference to show that both the discs are the same that have been released by First Look – but would like more info on this other version if it actually exists?

It is obvious, R1 ASOKA DVD has been copied from PAL master. Best of the best transfers “Film to PAL to NTSC” will be worst than Worst of the worst “Direct Film to NTSC” transfers. (The same goes for Film to NTSC to PAL transfer, which you never see as most of the PAL equipment is capable of the lower res NTSC)

If you really want to buy R1 ASOKA DVD, find out which pirate version has been converted from Film without going through the intermediate PAL conversion, and buy that one.

High end users probably have the capability of playing R2 PAL DVDs. For them, R2 ASOKA DVD is among the top 1 or 2 out of the thousands of presently available Indian DVDs.

Apparently there’s another version of Asoka! From First Run Features and this version contains appearances from Robin Williams & Walter Matthau – I kid you not;

All I can say is that there’s two exactly same cover DVDs (not to mention the first DVD they put out too) going on sale in USA – both from First Look – one has burnt in subtitles, the other has removable English and Malayan subtitles.

Again thanks to socas for the screen shots.

From the screen shots; the one socas has looks a little cleaner but still the video is not on par with R2 DVD - it lacks sharpness, poorly converted from a PAL source and artefacts galore. Apart from the removable subtitles there is very little difference between the both R1 versions; they seem to have been mastered by the same people, using the same techniques. Both are from First Look. As the covers Arsh (from Blockbuster) and socas (from DVD Empire) are exactly the same including the white circle sticker on front and subtle changes on back cover – it’s impossible to tell which version (removable or burnt-in subtitles) DVD you are going to get.

My advice: get the R2 PAL DVD if you can play it or otherwise the only other option are these R1 Asoka DVDs – and which you get is anybody’s guess ???
