Buy the 40GB PS3, you can do so much more with it as compared to a standalone blu ray player. You can surf the net, download and play games, trailers etc and load and play your mp3s on it! To me a standalone blu ray player doesn't make sense right now! If that is the base sony blu ray player (BDP-S300) in the picture, it can't decode some of the audio tracks on blu ray disks that the PS3 can.

Not only that its the cheapest way, I believe right now, to get a profile 1.1 player .. keep in mind though the 40gb will not play ps1 or ps2 games if interest leans that way a little.

Personally I own the 60gb and am totally loving it .. I saw a Sony BR standalone player in Best Buy once and it numerous problems .. even the sales rep said they recommend a PS3 to all :D

I just ordered the Panasonic BD30. Seems to be getting good reviews - the prices are going up and down every 10 minutes! I thought about the PS3 but decided against a gaming machine as it's way too tempting to spend hours and hours playing games!

Another vote for ps3 as a blu-ray player. I really like the playstation network too. They got free game demos and HD movie trailers you can download. Not to mention all the games are in HD and it will do a good job in upconverting your dvds to 1080p. 8)

If your in the UK consider importing the US 60GB PS3 - it's seems to the best options for Blu-ray at the moment - there's a thread on thedvdforums about the reasons why;

thats all very well and i guess the cheap price from getting it in dollars makes it very attractive to get from canada/usa

but there are still teeting problems with the ps3 and sending it back would be a headache from the uk... as sony always insist to contact the seller for any problems before they actually send u a replacement

u could always buy the 40gb here in the uk and then upgrade the hd to 500gb also it won't be long before a multi region fix come around to make all bluray region free on the ps3 via a disk or a firmware update !!!

It's been over a year since the PS3 came out and so far there is no Region crack yet. Also even if there was a crack developed, it would be nullified by the continuos firmware updates from Sony.

Once the PS3 firmware is cracked (ie hackers find a way to run their own code from a some sort of exploit) then it'll become like the PSP - as soon as Sony release an updated firmware within days they'll be hacked firmware out there with all sorts of features. Sony to date haven't been able to stop or nullify the PSP hacked firmwares.

Okay - my Panny BD30 turned out to be a total lemon - will not play any discs at all (DVDs or BDs)! I can't even upgrade the firmware as it won't even recognise the firmware disc!!! So I may now revisit the PS3 idea - and go for a stand-alone player in a couple of years when they are not so buggy. Just wondering though - has anyone had problems playing BD's on their PS3?

Thanks!

I have had my PS3 (40GB) for about 3 months now. It's played everything I have put in it: Blu ray, PS3 games, DVD, DVD+/-R and DVD+R DL. No problems using the wifi to get firmware updates, fast load times. You are making a good choice by going the PS3 way. You won't be disapointed.

Thanks yaar!!! Standalone will come later - for now I will do the PS3 thing. I've waited a while for a decent blu ray player and I can't wait any longer!

I have had my PS3 60gb since May of last year and have played many BDs and DVDs on it without a hiccup. Personally I only recommend the PS3 to anyone looking for a BD player.
