Sorab Irani hopes to revolutionise Indian cinema by making the country's first digital film. The film is based on the life and times of the notorious international criminal Charles Sobhraj and stars Jackie Shroff as the mastermind.

They don't say what system is used. If it's DV-Cam it will
look poor. If it's Sony Cinealta 1080p24 it can look
gorgeous.
There is a digital film shot in Bengal says Times of
India. This one is DV-Cam --> will look much worse than
current Indian films shot on 35mm.

hmmm... i was watching some program on ARY the other day and Javaid Sheikh (a Classic pakistani actor) is directing a movie where he intends to use a digital filming techniques to film the whole movie... now that is a giant leap for a pakistani movie, seeming all their movies are filmed using left over russian filming equipment... It will be interesting to see if lollywood does do somet intersting like this...!!

Don't be fooled by the word digital. Most of the time this films are just shot in DV. It is a very cheap alternative to film. While the digital format used by George Lucas is high def-looks very much like film. You probably can't make out the difference between film and high def digital video if the end result is good.

While with DV anyone can be a film maker.

That's no giant leap for the Pakistani film - I seriously doubt they're using what George Lucas is for Star Wars :) So the other alternative is DVCam or even MiniDV. Left over Russian equipment or not, at least they used to shoot on 35mm film. This is merely a means of drastically cutting down on costs. All dying film industries are doing this, including Singapore.
