Wait till all the proud new owners realise that they can't play films from Sony/Columbia, Disney/Pixar, MGM and Fox.

Wasnt Transformers suppose to give a blow to BD? :? BD still came out the winner that week (51% BD vs 49% HD) with the Disney 2 for 1 Blu Ray Sale plus various other hits (Hollow Man / Masters of Horror: Volumes 1 & 2 etc).

Next week with Cars and Ratatouille coming out .. people will realize that their HD players cannot play them so guess what .. Walmart/Best Buy get ready for returns

Being format neutral by having a Blu-Ray and HD-DVD player, doesn't matter to me who wins! But this format war is good cause it's driving down the cost of the HD-DVD/Blu-ray hardware and software for the average consumer!

BTW in a few weeks Ocean's Thirteen and Bourne Ultimatium come out on HD-DVD!

Continue the war cuz it's good for the consumer!

On the flip side, when the average consumer spends $500+ on a blu-ray player and can't get to watch movies from Universal, New Line Cinema, Warner, Paramount, The Weinstein Company, Canal Studios and more, they are gona be pissed!

Also Warner might be going Blu Ray along with The Weinstein Company (they havent released anything for the past couple of months and hints are they might leave HD).

BTW New Line is also Blu ;)

Warner is neutral so you can buy BR. From the big ones only Paramount and Universal are HD-DVD exclusive. Dreamworks is HD-DVD but some titles will be BR too (Spielberg does not allow his titles to be HD-DVD only). For now BR has quite some more support. Should Warner go blue next year HD-DVD is dead. Should Warner go HD-DVD it gets really interesting. :D

My mistake on listing Warner and others as HD-DVD exclusive. IMO even if you are a big time Blu-ray supporter, the ability to buy a HD-DVD player for $100 is a deal that's hard to pass up if you want to enjoy movies in HD! To me this deal is a no brainer. If you have a Blu-ray player and a HDTV, you have probably spent around $2000 on your setup. What's another $100 to get a HD-DVD player. Even if HD-DVD losses to Blu-ray you are only out $100 which to most people isn't that big a deal. Atleast you will get to watch all available movies in HD, plus the A2 is great up converting DVD player!

High definition mouseover comparisons

The Spider-man 3 comparison compares the DVD to the Blu-Ray. I don't know the methods used to capture the HD images, and the DVD might be filtered, but the HD images are impressive nonetheless.

Wow .. there are noticable differences .. especially Spiderman 3. The street signs, building to skin textures .. I already have the trilogy and was going to do my own comparison next weekend. Will still try it on my own set. Thanks for the link though.

Ocean's Thirteen is a Warner title and as already pointed out, Warner is neutral and releases on Blu-Ray also. New Line is also neutral, although all their new titles will be released on Blu-Ray first and then couple of months later on HD-DVD due to region coding issues. The Weinstein Company is rumored to very soon become neutral if not switch over totally to Blu-Ray. As for Canal Studios, who really cares. This war is not good for the consumer, HD-DVD needs to die ASAP.

There should be a big difference between the image quality of a SD DVD and Blu-ray. If there wasn't, i'd be pissed!!

IMO, HD-DVD is a necessary evil for the benefit of the consumer. Last year at this time a standalone Blu-ray player cost around a $900. You can can buy a standalone Blu-ray player right now for about $450.00. This big drop in price is definitly a direct result of Toshibha/Microsoft lowering the price of standalone HD-DVD players. Even if you are a big Blu-ray supporter, you have to admit this war is making it more economical for the average consumer to enjoy movies in HD.

As mhafner pointed out above that warner is expected to choose a side pretty soon, if they choose Blu-ray that could be the nail in the coffin for HD-DVD but if they choose HD-DVD it could make things interesting!

I admit the war between BD and HD make things more economical for the customer but DVD came out it never had a rival but prices dropped .. anything new initially costs $$$ but quickly drops when it catches on. If it were only BD yes the prices probably wouldnt have dropped as fast as they did.

Warner Says Blu-ray Comments "Misquoted and Misconstrued"

HighDefDigest.Com

Nearly a week after a Warner VP appeared to indicate otherwise, the studio told High-Def Digest that it has no plans to cease its dual-format stance, pledging a strong line-up for both Blu-ray and HD DVD in 2008.

News that Warner was eying a change in its high-def strategy spread like wildfire last week, following a story in industry trade Home Media Magazine that included a series of comments attributed to Warner VP of High-Definition Media Dan Silverberg at last week's Blu-ray Festival in Los Angeles.

"One thing that may be changing is our strategy," Silverberg was quoted as saying. "When both formats launched and hardware prices were high, we made a decision to support both formats and let the consumer decide. But now that hardware pricing is affordable for both Blu-ray and HD DVD, it appears consumers no longer want to decide -- so the notion of staying in two formats for the duration is something we are re-evaluating."

Silverberg reportedly followed up his remarks by citing strong Blu-ray sales for the studio's top-selling '300' release, saying that "we can definitely talk Blu-ray" and that Warner is "committed to the format," a set of comments that seemed to suggest that the studio was considering a move to exclusive support of the Blu-ray format.

Following several days of breathless speculation from fans and industry insiders alike, Warner is now breaking its silence on the matter, referring to Silverberg's remarks as having been "misquoted and misconstrued."

Speaking with High-Def Digest, Jim Noonan, SVP of Strategic Promotion and Communication for Warner Home Entertainment Group said "I can tell you that Warner's position has not changed, and I know that Dan did not intend to suggest that wasn't the case. We support both formats and we have made no decision to alter that policy, nor are there any such announcements coming, or being planned."

As for speculation that the studio is waiting for Q4 sales results before making an announcement of format exclusivity -- perhaps even as soon as this January's CES in Las Vegas -- Noonan shot down any such short-term scenarios.

"Like any major company, we are always reviewing our strategies in every aspect of our business, it is what smart companies do. I can't say what may happen five, ten years down the line. But right now, Warner Bros. has made no decision to change course. We are still onboard with both formats, and will continue [with a strong line-up of new releases and catalog titles], just as we have in the past in supporting HD DVD and Blu-ray."
