Devdas at Cannes!!!!

Times Of India:

PARIS: India's unstoppable Bollywood movie industry has at last won international respect with the announcement on Wednesday that one of its emotional song-and-dance features will appear at the Cannes Film Festival next month.

Devdas, directed by Sanjay Leela Bhansali, was included in the official selection of films unveiled in Paris by the organisers of the May 15-26 event on the French Riviera.

It will be shown out of competition in a special screening during the festival.

The movie is the third celluloid take on a classic Indian tragedy in which the title character drunkenly pines after his childhood sweetheart while rebuffing the advances of a love-struck prostitute.

An elated Bhansali said, "For the first time a film of this genre is being screened at the Cannes Film Festival and I am honoured.

It is a big moment of pride for all those who have been associated with the film, which we completed against all odds.
"I am happy our efforts have been acknowledged. It is also a triumph for Hindi commercial cinema that a film in the popular format gets a world honour."

Jackie Shroff, who plays the role of Chunibabu in the film, said, "It is a great thing that the film has entered the Cannes Film Festival.

Bhansali has put so much into the film. I have seen the man work from close quarters on the sets and his dedication has paid off."

Devdas stars Shah Rukh Khan, Madhuri Dixit, Aishwarya Rai and Jackie Shroff.

Cannes is not only place to showcase the film at an international stage but loads of international distributors are on the look out for new films – hopefully Eros will get the chop and proper DVD/film distributors will be found for the international markets.

Now that Devdas will arrive at Cannes, how seriously will foriegn distributors look at the film and pick up the rights and How easily would Eros let go of the distribution rights.

Sony/Columbia Tristar picked up Lagaan in America and Produced a great dvd so there's hope now. :alien: :D

Sanjay Leela Bhansali's magnum opus Devdas has been invited to the
Cannes Film Festival. The festival opens May 15 and extends to May 26.

Confirming the news, Shah Rukh Khan who stars in the film, says, "Yes,
the film is in the competition section at the Festival." Devdas is the
first Hindi feature film to win an entry into the competition even
before its release in India. The film is slated to release June 14."

It may be recalled that the Union Information and Broadcasting Minister
Sushma Swaraj had inaugurated the India Pavilion at the Cannes Film
Festival last year. Also, the National Film Development Corporation, a
part of the India Pavilion, sold some of Satyajit Ray's works for a
theatrical release in Spain.

dont forget Lagaan had always been in the hands of Columbia Tristar sister company Sony Entetainment India unlike Devdas. Devdas is connected with Eros underworld pals like Bharat shah...Maybe if sony or any other company are keenly interested in this movie they could buy the international rights to the movie which i think is unlikely, i hope im wrong
