Partner may face $30 mn Hitch
8 Aug, 2007, 0347 hrs IST,Sonali Krishna, TNN

MUMBAI: The recently released Salman Khan & Govinda starrer Partner seems to be heading for serious trouble. Co-produced by Eros and K Sera Sera, the movie has been accused of being a direct lift from the Will Smith starrer Hitch.

The producers of Hitch, Will Smith’s production house Overbrook Entertainment along with Sony Pictures Entertainment, are contemplating a $30-million suit against both the Indian producers. Senior officials of Sony Pictures said that they will probably move the court in the UK as both K Sera Sera and Eros are registered entities in the UK and the US.

James Lassiter, partner, Overbrook Entertainment, told ET, “We are looking into the matter and consulting Sony Pictures on how to take the matter forward.” The aggressive move stems from the fact that Sony Pictures is all set to debut in Bollywood and is planning to reproduce some of its Hollywood flicks in Hindi and other regional languages.

However, when ET contacted Sunil Lulla, managing director, Eros International, he said, “We have no idea about this development and I have not seen Hitch to remake it into Partner.” Moreover, Sony Pictures is also looking at adapting some of its own formats to Indian sensibilities.

Insiders also revealed that they have realised that the Bollywood overseas market is significant, and if money is being made, they would want a piece of the pie. This is not the first time, one has heard of Indian films lifting the entire script from Hollywood flicks.

However, this is the first time that an international film company has decided to take legal action against an Indian entertainment company for plagiarism. In a sense, this also shows Bollywood’s growing importance, with foreign entertainment companies looking at entering the Hindi movie space and taking notice of Bollywood content.

With Walt Disney, Viacom and Sony Pictures eyeing to grab a share of Bollywood, copyright infringement will no longer remain a dormant subject. Indian filmmakers will now have to tread carefully in terms of how they whip up content as foreign entertainment companies will rightfully claim a share of the profits on the back of copyright fees.

I agree. While I love Bollywood films, it's high time that they STOP ripping off other people's ideas without their consent. That itself just isn't right and I'm shocked that so many films have gotten away with it for so long.

and vice versa, Hollywood has ripped lots of hindi movies, remember seeing Khiladi movie and then if you take a look at I Saw What You Did Last Summer you will notice a lot of plot lifting directly from Khiladi movie.

I sincerely hope and pray 'Eros' is bankrupted by this suit. I wish the law allowed for Salman, Govinda and David Dhawan to also be sued for this. While we are dreaming, might as well add that I wish this was considered a criminal offense and Salman, David etc. were locked up and the keys thrown away. But the fact is that nothing will come of this. In fact the film will only benefit from all the publicity it is getting due to this controversy. Only Indians can make such crap a big success while movies like 'Gandhi, My Father' has no audience. Even Zulmis favor such crap, which is quite evident from the attention this thread is getting while the 'Gandhi, My Father' thread is already gone and forgotten.

I don't know what exactly the lifts are, if they are indeed lifts, but for every supposed HW copy of a BW film, there are TONS of BW copies of HW films.

Domestic B.O.: Business slumps yet again!

At the wedding anniversary of a leading financier, the conversation veered towards the varied themes that are being witnessed on the Hindi screen of late. Irrespective of how these films fare at the ticket window, you cannot turn a blind eye to the fact that most storytellers are at least making an effort to offer something different to moviegoers.

Let’s take a quick look at the kind of cinema we’ve witnessed in the recent past. APNE was a family film [literally], AWARAPAN highlighted a love story, NAQAAB was a suspense thriller, PARTNER tickled your funny bone, CASH presented the chor-police chase and GANDHI MY FATHER depicted reality.

In fact, when the release of CASH was shifted by one week, coinciding with GANDHI MY FATHER, the film industry wasn’t worried. Reason being, the two films were diverse in content and would, therefore, attract different patrons. But the Friday numbers came as a jolt.

Let’s talk about CASH first. A section of the industry was of the opinion that the film would open with a bang, like PARTNER or Anubhav Sinha’s previous outing DUS. But the not-as-expected start did catch people by surprise [ideally, the multi-starrer should’ve garnered a 90% + start]. In certain circuits, the opening numbers were approx. 40% - 50% - 60%, while in Punjab, the collections came sliding downwards on Day 1 itself.

What went against this much-hyped multi-starrer were the negative reports. The film was high on hype, but low on substance and the cracks started appearing for this reason. The film fell on Saturday at several places, while Sunday was better. Monday onwards, CASH is on a downward spree, as collections continue to fall rapidly.

What also goes against the film is the price tag attached to it. Adlabs bought the film for a handsome price and in turn sold it for fancy prices to various distributors. As things stand today, the film is sure to make a hole in the pockets of its buyers. In fact, the Head of Distribution of Studio 18, one of the prominent distributors of CASH, has gone on record [on my TV show] to state that they would lose 30% of their investment in CASH.

Meanwhile, check out the day-wise collections of CASH in C.P. Berar territory.

The fate of GANDHI MY FATHER came as a shocker. A good film and a good run at the box-office are two different issues. GANDHI MY FATHER is a well-made product and I strongly feel that it needs to be nominated for the Oscars.

Surprisingly, even though the audience feedback was tremendous, the numbers of GANDHI MY FATHER refused to multiply. With a shockingly low start on Friday, the film did show a slight increase on Saturday and Sunday at select multiplexes, but the overall scenario continues to be disheartening.

Anil Kapoor, the enterprising producer of GANDHI MY FATHER, has gone on record [on my TV show again] that the film would gather momentum from its second week onwards. But there’s CHAK DE INDIA and KAAFILA to compete with. Also, with PARTNER still faring well, it’s going to be a tough journey for GANDHI MY FATHER.

The third release, NAYA DAUR, was also greeted by equally unenthusiastic crowds. A section of the film industry attributes the poor start to the low-key promotion [unlike MUGHAL-E-AZAM, which was heavily promoted]. A few feel that the theme of the film is irrelevant in today’s times.

** It is unfortunate that film going audience are patronizing bad films like cash, partner, aap ka saroor

I thought partner was viewable just because of govinda, songs, katrina! rest you all know, last 30 minutes are very hard to sit through even if you have left your brain home!

Dus worked for style only! I did not see any good in there, except Pankhaj Kapoor and Director used same formula for cash!

BTW in hollywood, I thought 300 was pathetic film.
