Not sure about that, but I think APHG was released around 15/16th August '97.....am I right in thinking the movie was released just before/just after Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan passed away?

By the way, 'Iruvar' won the National Award for Best Cinematography in 1998, for Santhosh Sivan's work in the film.

Arsh, you should post a few screenshots that would really show the color saturation levels and also the clarity of the DVD. One is during the song 'Narumugaiye' when I think Mohanlal is putting a flower in Ash's hair? I think so, its when he is behind her. The colors are amazing. Another time is the close-ups of Tabu when shes on the steps sitting and talking to Prakashraj and telling him she gave up everything for him. Great close-up angles there. Another great and well shot scene is when Ash (second role) is asking Mohanlal about Ash (first role). Its the scene she says 'Rakshasan' ("demon"). She looks so pretty. Then there also the scene during the Gautami song 'Poongudi' where they used this old telecine effect when shes brushing her face against the violet flowers. You should try to post these as well!!

I rented Iruvar yesterday, and while I've only watched a few minutes, I'm not very impressed with the picture. It's very soft and is overly DNR'ed, as usual. The sound is good, though. If Ayngaran releases a version, theirs will surely be better than this one. The subtitles leave out some of the dialogue, and when the subtitles of two people are onscreen simultaneously, they do not clearly mark that the second subtitle is being said by the second person.

Now I've watched the whole film. When the camera is absolutely still, the sharpness is okay, but at other times, the DNR causes the skin on people's faces to look floaty. It also causes the detail in the faces to blur on the slightest movement, not that there was a whole lot of detail in the first place. On some DVDs one can see the makeup on the actor's faces or the stubble on a man's face, but not here.

I watched 'Iruvar' yesterday. It's a great movie with amazing performances from Mohan Lal and Prakash Raj. The editing and cinematography are just excellent. I loved the way Ash looked, very beautiful. ARR's score was very good too.

I don't believe the 5.1 is created from mono track. There is too much surround activity and .LFE to be converted from mono. It's a great DD mix. Did they use sync sound for the movie? The dialouges etc. sounded really natural. 4/5

PQ is ok. Some parts had good color saturation and others looked all washed out. 3/5

I've never seen the Pyramid version, but going by the screenshots the API version looks like it knocks spots off it. The video is PAL-to-NTSC, but still offers much better detail and sharpness. Colour and contrast levels are more natural also. No ugly logo either.

Curiously, some shots look to be colour-coded differently to the Pyramid transfer; compare the two B&W shots - one is in colour on the Pyramid DVD (the kid on the train) while the other is sepia toned on the API version (Madhu).

The API disc has a DTS track too which sounds pretty good to me, though its pitch-corrected.

I got my copy from AnyTamil.com. It's also available from NilaShop.com.
