Well, i watched the movie at the theatres adn i bought the dvd, but just for the music. Being a fan of the previous Rekha version, i was greatly dissapointed with the new Aishwariya one. Dont get me wrong, Ash is beautiful and all but not a mature actress. She couldnt handle the character. Rekha did it with so much panache and grace that its still impossible for me to put Ash's image next to Umraao Jaan. The new movie was full of close ups of Ash and concentrated more on the love story, while the older one concentrated on the bigger picture. The older version showed how life played tricks with Umraao and even so, there times in the older version that made it feel like she was atleast happy in that time, The newer one made it look like life got worse at every corner. I got the dvd for the music videos of the songs. That is the only reason.

Aaj hum umrao ko ghar ley hee aye...

Dono ko.

Abhi pehli waali ki mehfil sajie hae.

At 40% off the 2-dvd set of "the original Don" and "the original Umrao Jaan" was too good to resist. Amitabh's Don and Rekha's Umrao Jaan in one pack -- Rs. 299.00 -- yes the DVD is by Eagle - not a trustworthy company, but I decided to take a risk.

And yes, the Aishwarya release is from Eros in India - a 2-dvd set.

I see a miniature "Rapid Eye" inscription on cover.
Also, it's listed as PAL format. So, could be default Progressive if it's from a PAL master ??

Worth exploring.

Adlabs Umraao Jaan was from NTSC master (every 5th field is a repeated field).
If the PAL DVD comes from NTSC master, then there is no hope. But, if it's from a new telecine for PAL DVD, it'll a lot better.

To my knowledge, REM never do their own telecine work - they only use the masters supplied by the distributors. If the masters are NTSC, they usually adjust the frame-rate to avoid ghosting.

In any case, knowing REM, they'll doubtless mess around with the colours yet again for their Umrao Jaan DVD.
