Thanks Stephen. Next time I'm at Ayngran, I'll ask to see the disc before I buy.
I just wish, their staff knows what they have.

The worst that I have seen from Genuine Shemaroo is Paakeeza, and even that one is miles ahead of present day releases. All the Shemaroo titles that I have seen, have brilliant colors and excellent sharpness. Only thing is, most of them are interlaced (averaged fields); (some are pseudo-prog).

Rana
Another grouse I have is that most 2.35 films are cropped by Shemaroo to 2.20 or nearabouts...

That is not correct. In fact it was the first Hindi movie to be released in DTS. I personally saw the film first day first show and remember the DTS sound to be quite good.

Judwaa was the first Hindi film in DTS. Hindustani (Hindi Version) was never released in DTS. Only the Tamil and Telugu versions were. The sound you heard was Ultra Stereophonic 4 track. No North Indian cinema was equipped to handle DTS soundtracks, till Judwaa came out.

The Tamil DVD has both the Dolby Digital and DTS soundtrack. The DTS track was taken from the final master (DA8), whereas the Dolby Digital track was taken from the 35mm film - due to contractual reasons.

The Tamil DVD does have English subtitles, albeit badly translated.

Sunny you need to verify your facts a bit more. You are right in a way that Judwaa was the first, shot in Hindi DTS release but the fact remains that Hindustani was the first DTS soundtrack film to be released in Hindi, albeit the Hindi soundtrack was dubbed and the film not originally shot in Hindi. The reason I am able to make this claim so strongly is that Shiela cinema in Delhi was the first to be equiped with DTS sound and the owner of the theater, Uday Singh who is also the Managing Director of Columbia Tristar Filims of India Ltd, had himself invited us for the screening of Hindustani at Shiela first day, first show. I and another friend of mine had gone to see the film at Shiela only for the reason that it was in DTS. As a matter of fact I had also watched Judwaa at Shiela in DTS when it was released. Shiela is not a theater that I normally would go to watch films and the only reason I had gone out of my way to do so in the case of Hindustani and Judwaa was because of the DTS sound. By the way Shiela cinema is a single screen theater located in Pahar Ganj near the New Delhi railway station. The area is not very nice and generally draws a pretty down market crowd now. But inspite of all this the theater has one of the best sound systems in Delhi and has always prided itselve on being first with the latest technologies in movie theaters. Shiela was the first 70MM 6 track sound theater in India, the first to have DTS sound in Delhi and also the first to have Dolby Digital EX in Delhi.

PS: I think I know a little bit about sound and quite honestly 'Ultra Stereophonic 4 track' sound is quite crappy compared to DTS or even Dolby Digital and Hindustani at Shiela sounded quite darn good. By the way, why don't you check out the DEI DVD of Hindustani, it has a pretty darned good Dolby Digital 5.1 sound which I am sure you will agree could not have been derived from 'Ultra sterophonic 4 track'. In contrast the DEI 'Hum Aapke Hain Kaun' DVD with Dolby Digital 5.1 derived from the 'Ultra sterophonic 4 track' prints of the film, sounds quite pathetic.

Sanjay, your observations are very convincing.

Did you mean "Raja Hindustani" ?? Don't think "HINDUSTANI" ever got released by DEI or in collaboration with DEI.

Actually I should have mentioned that I was referring to a DEI songs DVD that I have and not a full movie DVD. I had just assumed that since DEI released a song DVD with songs from 'Hindustani' (Kamlahasan, Manisha Koirala) thus they must have released a full movie DVD of Hindustani also. Obviously I was wrong in assuming about the latter part.

PS: Why in the world would I confuse the crappy, Mono sound only, Raja Hindustani with a decent entertainer like Hindustani.?

Rana

I must say I prefer the better Eros titles to Pakeezah,
not to mention K3G quality from Superdigital.
The DNR simply looks grotesque on my 2.4m wide screen.
Terribly distracting.
