On Elizabeth II:

4 MAY 2006 - CHURCH OF ST. BARTHOLOMEW-THE-GREAT, LONDON
JUSTIN POLLARD, HISTORICAL RESEARCHER

One of the pivotal moments in the film is being shot today in this beautiful 12th century church - the execution by beheading of Mary Queen of Scots.

Mary was executed on the morning of 8th February, 1587 at the now ruined castle of Fotheringhay in Northamptonshire in a scene of high drama. She had only been told of her impending death the previous evening after dinner but, being aware that she had been condemned in a cursory trial the previous October, she had prepared herself for a spectacular and iconic death.

We have to condense the three horrific, magnificent last three hours of Mary's life into just few minutes of film so the filmmakers have picked the key moments from the recorded events and woven them into a master shot that sees Mary enter, ignoring the Protestant prayers of the Dean of Peterborough, mount the scaffold, disrobe revealing the crimson shift - the colour of Catholic martyrdom - beneath her black dress, grant her executioner forgiveness and place her head on the block.

Even though it's a film the scene has a startling effect on both the crew and the 100+ actors and extras in the room. Despite the lights and cameras I think most of us feel we are actually witnessing the execution. Over this silent scene rises the musical theme AR Rahman has composed for the movie, which arrived only this morning and which director Shekhar Kapur has asked for on playback during the scene. It echoes round the ancient walls of the church as Mary takes her last steps. We don't see the moment of her death - we don't need to. Mary has approached her last hours as a queen and she dies a queen.

This poster comes in the CD released in India (not the ones released by Ayngaran here). Dont know why idlebrain has to add their name to it (as if they have the sole copyright!). ARR look very cute though. This is his new hairstyle (and when asked about it, he said, he dont want to have any specific style and lot of things inside him changed after his haj visit this year)

DVDU, did you get the SOK CD in stock yet?

That picture was one of the SOK posters (before the name change) when the movie was launched. ARR shaves his head before (or is it during? after?) going on hajj. So that picture was probably taken quite some time ago.

I can spare 1 for you. Its ayngaran release, has SOK and ARR hits. But this one doesnt have the poster.

FYI, I watched his interview in SunTV with the same hair style. May be he had the same hair style before going to haj and have the same now (or suntv recorded long time back)

BTW anyone has Vijay TV here. I watched vijaytv while in India and they have much better programmes. Wonder how the reception./pic quality is in US.

Thanks, DVDU.

I read on the ARR Yahoo group that the film includes one extra song not on the CD and cassette.

Rahman fights for copyright of his music

"I can't run to music companies every time I need to use my own song, " says the composer

Subhash K Jha

A R Rahman has decided to put his foot down and protest against the prevailing practices in Bollywood. The music composer is going all out to campaign for securing the financial rights of composers and lyricists, and even producers.

As a first step to furthering this 'movement' Rahman has withdrawn from Farah Khan's next film. "I'm not doing Farah Khan's Om Shanti Om. But that doesn't mean there's any quarrel with her or with Shah Rukh who is producing her film. Farah and I go back a long way. We did Bombay Dreams together. In fact, I did some tunes for Om Shanti Om which Farah has now returned to me, not because she didn't like them but because we just couldn't agree on my terms, " he says.

Rahman's new policy is simple. He says, "I want to push for the copyright of composers and lyricists, even producers. I'm not saying that I want to be the sole proprietor of the songs I compose. But I want a share. There's nothing wrong with that. I can't run to music companies like T-Series and Sa Re Ga Ma every time I need to use my own song."

Unfortunately, not too many producers in Bollywood are willing to share Rahman's demand for a share in the royalty for a song.

But Rahman holds no grudges against anyone, least of all Aamir Khan or Shah Rukh from whose productions the composer has opted out, on this issue. "In fact Shah Rukh tried his utmost to see and to put forward my point of view, " defends Rahman.

Unfortunately, T-Series, the music company which will market the music of Om Shanti Om, would have none of it.

Rahman laughs, "I realise that I have a huge fight on hand, although I don't see it as a fight. It's not like the British rock band Queen which owned sole copyright of all its songs. But I won't run to music companies in Mumbai for the rights for my songs every time I want to perform them at concerts. Music companies must recognise the changing ground reality. Today, conventional outlets for music sales are drying up. Soon all music will be free while the performers and performances will be paid for."

Rahman is ready to take on the flak that he's likely to earn, for his stance. He says, "Any change is frowned at. But I'm standing up for what I think is right. Yes, producers will back out. But that's fine. I've always been asked why I haven't done a non-film album. Now, I have the time to do that."

What could complicate matters for Rahman in Mumbai is his selective attitude to the copyright issue. While he has chosen to assert his financial rights over Aamir Khan and Shah Rukh Khan, Rahman has exempted Ashutosh Gowariker's Jodha-Akbar from the copyright-net. Rahman says, "It has to be flexible. I can't draw a net on all my assignments and draw up a uniform code.

At the same time, I'm not insecure about my career. If I lose out on some assignments in Mumbai I'm ready to bear with the loss."

• I'm not saying that I want to be the sole proprietor of the songs I compose. But I want a share. There's nothing wrong with that — A R Rahman

Selvaraghavan goes for Rahman
IndiaGlitz [Saturday, October 28, 2006]

Selvaraghavan always does things at his own pace. But these days the pace is picking up. Selvaraghavan is now giving final touches to his Telugu movie starring Venkatesh and Trisha.

Then he is supposed to do a movie titled Idhu Maalai Nerathu Mayakkam starring Suriya's sibling Karthi and Kadhal fame Sandhya in lead role. The movie would be for his White Elephants production house.

Close on the heels of Idhu Maalai Nerathu Mayakkam, Selvaraghavan will be off to Bollywood.

Yes, he is venturing to direct a Hindi movie. Selvaraghavan’s Hindi movie would be a remake of his 7G Rainbow Colony, which was a blockbuster in both Tamil and Telugu.

Raadan Media in association with UTV will produce the movie. For the first time, A R Rahman will team up with Selvaraghavan.

Selvaraghavan had hitherto combined with Yuvan Shankar Raja for his movies. And almost of them have been musical hits. Their combination is one of the best in South India. But when it came to pan-Indian appeal, Rahman is the best bet and so Selvaraghavan has naturally gone for him.

The Hindi movie will commence shortly. The candidates for the hero’s role are being short-listed.

Rahman's Oscar khalbali!
[ 13 Dec, 2006 2059hrs ISTTIMES NEWS NETWORK ]

With three of his songs making it to the Oscars'shortlist, AR Rahman will turn a year older on a good note.

Although the Oscars eluded Lagaan's music director in 2001, this year AR Rahman has enough and more reasons to celebrate. To begin with, three of his songs have made it to the Oscars short list of 56 songs.

Rahman says, "They've short-listed 56 songs, of which three, 'Khalbali'and 'Lukka chuppi'from Rang De Basanti and 'Chan-chan'from Water, are mine. I was expecting a list of 500-600 songs, I'm quite surprised. I think the way they look at our films and music abroad has completely changed now. There's a lot more respect for what we do. They don't think of us as dancing around trees anymore."

Rahman chose the three songs for the Oscars on his own. He says, "I chose 'Luka chuppi'because of Lataji. She's the pride of the nation.

...I don't know what the outcome would be. I think it's a big honour to be there. But to get to the last 56 songs is quite an honour. My agent in LA was sweet enough to take care of all the nitty-gritties."

Come January 6, and the Mozart of Madras, Rahman will turn 41.

Rahman agrees that he's entering the most important decade of his life. "So far, I've just been busy living life. From my childhood I was surrounded by grown-ups, I never got a chance to enjoy being a child.

It took me a while to realise how young I was. By the time I realised that I was missing out on youthful activities I was no longer young. Now I'm re-living my childhood with three children. If I'm able to give them everything that I couldn't afford, they too are giving me back something vital,"he says.

The composer shares his birthday with his son. "My son is going to turn four on the same day. Yeah, he and I share the same birthday. ...I don't know how that happened,"he smiles.

And what sense has he made of the 40 years of his life? "My life has always been a journey. When I was in my 20s I went through the most turbulent time of my life.

Now I spend as much time as possible with my children Khatija (11), Rahima (8) and Amin (4). My studio in Chennai is bang opposite my house, so they spend a lot of time with me. All they've to do is cross the road and they're with me,"he says.
