For a film that takes so many risks, one ending clearly wasn't enough. Director Vipul Shah's debut movie, Aankhen, which released worldwide last Friday, breaks every rule in the Bollywood Bible. There is hardly any romance, music or action. Megastar Amitabh Bachchan is cast as a bad guy. The story is unusual — of a vengeful bank manager (Bachchan) who masterminds an ingenious heist.
If you saw the film in a theatre in India, you would have seen Bachchan being led away by the police in the end. But if you saw the film on cable, you'd have seen Bachchan bribing the cops and escaping from prison. That's because the ending is different in the 100 prints released overseas, and most pirated CDs in India come from overseas.

Says director Vipul Shah, "The ending in the overseas version is very Hollywood-ish. We didn't think it would work here. That's why we have a different ending for Indian audiences. We had a very difficult situation on our hands. We couldn't show that crime wins in the end. But we took a huge risk in showing Mr Bachchan emerging as a loser."

Shah doesn't think the two different endings are confusing for viewers who may have seen one or the other version. "I'd say it becomes a talking point. That can only help the film," he says.

According to Aankhen's Delhi-UP distributor Sanjay Mehta, the two endings add a curiosity value to the film. "People who saw it on cable would like to see it again in a hall," he says. "I have suggested the film should be re-released after a few weeks with the second ending."

Raj,

Thanks for ruining the ending(s) ;) Would have been nice if you wrote spoiler in the beginning of your message.

Anyhow would be nice if and when the DVD comes out, they incude both endings, one as an alternate ending. YEAH RIGHT THIS IS AN INDIAN DVD, AND NO WAY ON EARTH ARE THEY GOING TO DO THIS, ESPECIALLY VIDEO SOUND!!! DEI "MIGHT HAVE".

Disc 2 - Bribing the cops and escaping

Hey no problem, regarding the 3 DVDs and 2 DVDs with different versions of the film on 2 DVDs and the 3rd for whatever. I doubt that Video Sound would do this (esp. since only the endings are different), they have no idea as to how to make proper DVDs and even if they do, they would charge an arm and a leg for the package.

My 2 cents.

video sound could always use seamless branching so one one disc both endings could be seen and the audience can decide what should happen at the end :)

Rather that then two disc, my house can't fit anymore disc!!!
