Oooh baby! awesome. Can't wait to get into the drivers seat on the Formula One game. Man they got some amazing games heading our way!

 I know the studio who provided them shots haven’t even got a PS3 dev kit, so all them F1 are pre-renders. Sony is infamous for using pre-rendered video footage on pre-launches. Jury is still out on if Killzone is pre-rendered or not. I guess we won’t know for sure until Spring next year.

Toshiba Developing Xbox HD-DVD Player?Filed under Gossip: Xbox 2

Here’s an interesting tid-bit: Toshiba was showing off their Fall line-up the other day and demoed a HD-DVD that was being created in conjunction with Microsoft. This, of course, was well before the official Xbox software announcement, but now attendees are starting to wonder if references to the device’s ability to download games and play them may be tied into the Xbox software deal.

Could Toshiba be working on a HD-DVD Xbox? It would certainly explain why Microsoft seems so willing to drop the original console like a bad habit, maybe they are making room for a new, fancier iteration of the original.

Oh, and the Toshiba folks also spilled the beans on HD-DVD and the Xbox 360, saying that the next-gen console will use the new format for its media and whining about how Microsoft is dragging their feet on the official announcement.

For what it’s worth, Microsoft officials told me that the week before E3 and reconfirmed it when I called them back days later. (Who’s eating paste now Joel, stick that in your daily dose of Kielbasa and smoke it.)

Toshiba Introduces First HD DVD Laptop

Quote:
May 10, 10:56 PM (ET)

By GARY GENTILE

LOS ANGELES (AP) - Toshiba has introduced the first laptop capable of playing next-generation, high-definition DVDs.

The Qosmio G35-AV650 supports the HD DVD format, which Toshiba helped develop, and also plays standard DVDs. Its dual drive can write data onto both standard DVDs and dual-layer discs, which can store twice as much information.

HD DVD is the first of two competing high-definition DVD formats to hit the market, with a standalone player and such movies as "Million Dollar Baby" and "Goodfellas" already out. Products in the rival Blu-ray format, backed by Sony Corp. (SNE), are not expected until later this year.

The $3,000 Toshiba laptop sports 17-inch-wide screens that can display images in 1080p high-definition format. An HDMI port supports transfer via cable to high-definition TVs with 1080i resolution.

The computer also has a digital TV tuner that can play signals from a cable or satellite feed and a recorder that allows viewers to pause live TV or recording programs.

The multimedia features can be accessed via remote control without booting up the computer's Windows operating system, making it faster to just watch video or listen to music.

The laptop comes with two 100 gigabyte disk drives to store TV shows and other files.

SCEA president offers further clarification of 20GB PS3 specs
Ellie Gibson 13:50 11/05/2006
But wi-fi question remains unanswered

Following confusion over the technical specifications of the two versions of the PS3 Sony plans to launch, SCEA president Kaz Hirai has confirmed that the 20GB model will not feature HDMI output or data card inputs.

In an interview with CNN Money, Hirai said: "We felt that if you want to save something on your Memory Stick, most people have those readers on their PC, which is easily adaptable to the PlayStation 3 with a USB cord."

"The only difference is HDMI - and at this point, I don't think many people's TV's have that. The ultimate result, to my eyes anyway, is there's not a discernable difference between what you get between HDMI and other forms of high definition."

There is still some confusion over whether the 20GB PS3 will feature wi-fi functionality - according to a spec sheet issued by Sony, it will only be incorporated into the 60GB model. Neither Hirai's comments nor those made earlier by Sony Worldwide Studios president Phil Harrison have cleared up the issue.

Hirai went on to defend the price point for the PS3, which will retail for USD 599 / EURO 599 for the 60GB version and USD 599 / EURO 599 for the 20GB model. He dismissed suggestions that the price is too high, stating: "I think when you look at what we put into the box - Cell, Blu-Ray, backwards compatibility, the ability to go online - I think it's a very compelling package for consumers. The totality of what we bring to the table makes it a good value for consumers."

"What we're presenting to consumers is future-proofed. It's not going to fall by the wayside," he added.

Hirai went on to say that he is confident Sony will meet its targets of shipping four million PS3s around the globe by the end of the year, with a further two million to follow by April.

"We have the advantage of manufacturing our own chips. Most of the PlayStation 3's core components are manufactured in-house. The decision to give the go order comes when we're getting good yields."

"Obviously, the sooner the better, but we're not at the mercy of someone else."

Sony to drop low-end PS3 from UK launch?
Posted May 23rd 2006 10:04AM by Ryan Block
Filed under: Gaming

After all the delays and with so much rumor and hearsay going on over at the SCEA camp as to what shape the PlayStation 3's actually going to take this November (and what it is they're going to do to convince us to pick one up that doesn't involve low-balling us), for the time being we're a little leery of the kinds of things Sony's saying about this and that. But it's remarkably hard to argue when Ray Maguire, head of Sony Computer Entertainment UK, says something like: "The lower-end 20Gb version of PlayStation 3 has no WiFi, no HDMI, and none of the other slots in it, so it's... more likely that we will only launch the 60GB version." Saywha? The figure Sony UK's been tossing around for launch is £425 ($800 US), which -- we're sorry -- is hardly a bargain for any gaming console, equipped with Blu-ray or not. And with the premium UK and EU customers already pay on their gadgets, we can't even imagine why Sony would drop a single $800 version of the PS3 and expect people to cough it up. Then again SCEUK might recant and surprise us with a more reasonable launch price (and both console versions, as the rest of Europe should be getting), but if one thing's for sure, we smell a British gamer mutiny on their hands if they stay the course for a $800 UK launch.

** another BAD decision by Sony!! here comes MS  i HAVE SOME BAD VIBES FOR PS3

Microsoft Undercuts Sony in HD War

Rumoured HD-DVD add-on pricing suggests you'll be enjoying HD gaming and movies for less with an Xbox 360... if HD-DVD wins the format war, that is.

A big part of the reason for the shocking sticker price of the PlayStation 3 is down to the system's Blu-ray drive. Sony has bundled its highest technology into the system, but that has pushed the price up to $600 for the full-featured model.

Kutaragi's many heads do not approve
Now comes the news that Microsoft, which is backing Blu-ray rival HD-DVD in the next-generation DVD format wars, could sell the Xbox 360 and its external HD-DVD drive for less than Sony's PlayStation 3 asking price, retail sources close to Microsoft told GamesIndustry.biz.

The Xbox 360 currently sells for £280 at the top end, while the more expensive PlayStation 3 will sell for €599 when it hits stores in November. Sony has yet to announce a UK price.

Blu-ray and HD-DVD are locked in a battle to the death, much like that between VHS and Beta in the 1980s. Sony lost that time, but many movie studios are backing Blu-ray over HD-DVD.

P L E A S E V I S I T O U R S P O N S O R :

A key point is that the Xbox 360 will not use HD-DVD for games - only movies and other content will come on HD-DVD discs. The PlayStation 3, on the other hand, will use Blu-ray for games too, making it a more vital battle for Sony to win.

Were Blu-ray to lose to HD-DVD, the PlayStation 3 would find itself in the woods, but Microsoft has said in the past that the technology is there to add Blu-ray support should HD-DVD come in second.
