Yuvan, DVDU, what do you guys think? If there's any mistakes you can correct them.

I did not know that the Malayalam song Thumbee Vaa was by IR. Great song. Must have been challenging to sing.

hm..I checked the wikkipedia two weeks back for Ilayaraja, there was a listing but no information added to it. Did you start the information there? Glad to see some info there. Will check it later. Have a mid-term in the morning  anyway, I think He should be listed under as "Ilaiyaraaja" to have some uniform way of spelling His name.

BTW, when I was in India, I was able to score a Telugu version audio CD of Sindhu Bhairavi. Never knew this was dubbed into Telugu!

Non-Ilaiyaraaja related: I also discovered a really nice song called Bulla ki jaana mein kaunu by Rabbi Shergill. Good change from the overload of Himesh Reshammiya :)

I didn't post the information to Wikipedia.

I like how you refer to him as "He" :D

What is the availability of IR's Oriental Records CDs in India? I bought one there several years ago, but I don't know if the stores will have them these days. I don't remember seeing any on my last trip not too long ago, and I know someone who is going there later this year who I'd like to get some CDs for me.

Maybe I shouldn't tell you this, or maybe I should...I bought several Oriental Records Tamil CD's in India, and to my dissapointment they are all recorded on CD-R's with the blue-green dye. Don't know if I got bootleggs or if that's how they are manufacturing them these days. I also bought some Telugu CD's (non-oriental) which were on CD-R media. Recording quality on some new Ilaiyaraaja telugu CD's which were previously available on O.R. have been degraded by Aditya Music(normal media). Words of advice, CHERISH your collection cause I'm expecting the scene to only worsen :(

I'm confused because I bought O.R. Tamil CD's from dvdunlimitedonline last year, and they are on normal media.

keke, why the hell not? He brings joy to my otherwise miserable life :)

I'd like to know more about His name! Gnanadesikan -> Ilaiyaraaja transformation?? I'm familiar with the Dilip Kumar -> Allah Rakha Rahman transformation. Kinda funny, cause people don't believe me when I tell them. It is Dilip Kumar, aint it?

Do your OR CD-R CDs have a sticker on the back saying "marketed by Bharat Records International Pvt. Ltd."? Where in India did you buy them?

Ilayaraja was born in 1943 in a small village near Madurai, Tamil Nadu (India), Pannaipuram. He was the third son to Ramasamy and Chinnathayi. Althoug he was named as Gnanadesikan he was affectionately called as Rasaiyya. Later in his life, he began to stick the Raja named by his tutor Dhanraj Master under whom he learnt a considerable chunk of instrument skills. Finally Ilayaraja name was given to the tamil film director Panju Arunachalam. Ilayaraja has many conferred upon him. Of all the title "Isaignani" given by Karunanidhi(current CM) gained more popularity. Other titles were Nadhabramam (God of music creation), Ragadevan (king of tunes), Maestro, Isai Chakravarthy.

There were article that says IR was born as Christian (Harijan more specifically and there is a big controversy over a harijan entering temple etc, birth name was Daniel Rasayya) and converted to hindu (when he was named Gnanadesikan) and named as Raja by his master and since we already had an MD called Raja, Panchu Arunachalam named him as Illayaraja.

The site is pretty cool. Nice work. I will see if I can contribute something.

BTW I also bought few Oriental Records CD while I was in India and they are on proper CD. I bought them from Music Gallery in Coimbatore. This is 3 weeks back.

Saw Paandavas cartoon. Its a very good 3D animation movie. I would rate the animation to be as good as Finding Nemo (well, close to atleast). It had big credits like Sujatha (script writer), Lenin (editor) and music by maestro illayaraja.

I always wanted to see IR doing BGM for english movies and always wondered how it would be. Paandavas is pretty close attempt. Its as good as I watched a hollywood movie. Hats off!

I hope IR does few hollywood than finding time to do music for movies like Chidambarathil appasamy or Kastoorimaan. I think we have too many MDs to take care of such movies and we need IR to focus on what others cant do.

Just my wish &

If you have seen Bala Ramayanam you might have noticed the cute looking girl who acted opposite NTR.

She is Smita Madhav. Smita is finally making her screen debut as a 'teenage actress. All this while Smita was honing her talent, took lessons in classical music and dance and is now acting a film which is connected to arts.

Presented by Madala Janakiram, Devalaya Creations untitle project is directed by V Anjani Kumar. The story revolves around godess Vengamamba who is presiding diety in Narravada in Nellore district. Lyrics by Veturi, and music is scored by Ilayaraja. Other artistes are yet to be selected.
