I consider the following a the best Tamil films of 2005 with good quality DVD pic/sound quality;

Kadal (Romantic Drama) – Properly the best south Indian film of 2005. It’s down to earth story, use of characters, and location, captures an element missing from present Indian cinema. The screenplay and performance has transcended for world cinema, and has already enjoyed success at many film festivals, including London Film Festival. The film is based on a true story.

Kanaa Kanden (Thriller) - This is the kind of film RGV should be making, instead of producing Hollywood rehashes. It has a tight script, great performances, and a truly detestable villain. Cinematographer & director K.V.Anand continues his trend, and knack, for thriller stories, following his last hit "Chellame" (also worth recommending).

Anniyan (Masala/Thriller) – Shankar hits his peak which greatly improves on his pervious Indian corruption trilogy; Gentleman/Indian/Mudalavan. This film offers a more rounded screenplay, decent (Indian) technical values, and also some great scenes featuring Vikram. Soundtrack is also stunning, especially on the DTS track.

Chandramukhi (Comedy/Horror)- Regardless of what most critics think, this film has worked wonders at the box-office as audiences continue to go back for repeat viewing. The film does have loopholes and a flawed screenplay, but it does entertain for 2 1/2 hours, and actually does frighten in parts. Worth a deko and properly P.Vasu’s best directorial film.

Raam (Drama) – India’s answer to East of Eden/Rebel Without a Cause, the film looks at the story of an isolated person, and the disturbing bond with his Mother. Fused with a murder mystery, the screenplay is novel in its treatment and criticism of the Indian establishment/social conventions. Great cinematography and score, also features a memorable performance from Jeeva.

If your in India then buy the export "AYNGARAN INTERNATIONAL" DVD version, which is NTSC. Do not buy the AP INTERNATIONAL version, which has poor picture quality.

Thanks Shahran Sunny Audit for your recomendations.
I have now seen Kadhal and Anniyan. I Think Kadhal was a bit OTT in some places. But Anniyan was very entertaining.

'Indian' was dubbed into 'Hindustani' with KamalHaasan and was a hit for the hindi audience. But when Mudalvan was re-made as Nayak with Anil Kapoor, it flopped.

But I think Anniyan should be re-made into Hindi with different actors. As Vikram and others are unknown in bollywood.

The Directors Cut of Kaadhal (shown at the London Film Festival) does away with all the OTT scenes, and the songs. It makes it a more powerful film. Hopefully Ayngaran will release that version in the near future.

Anniyan is entertaining, but not for Bollywood. Vikram's performance was impressive, especially the scene when he confronts Prakash Raj, and his alter-ego. I can't see any Hindi actor in that role.

Also I finished watching Gajini on DVD, and I must say the final fight scene and FX was amazing. It felt like the evil Twins brothers really do exist, when they battle with Suyra. Gone are the days of cut and paste!

Sivaji - AVM have asked Shankar to deliver the film for this Diwali. However, knowing Shankar's track record for long post production work, I would bet on Pongal 2007.

However, right now the film is having some casting probs. So even a Pongal release is looking doubtful.

climax FX were fine for an Indian movie. Actually, much better than I ever would imagine. TWO thumbs up :P

Kadhal - I assume 'OTT' = Over The Top? Anyway, this movie is fine WITH the songs. Should've left the 'filler' comedy scenes out though

Many stores has ayngaran, but they dont carry the latest movies. YOu need to import from UK/US/Australia. Dont import from Malaysia, its usually by different makers and different brand.

BTW add Thavamai Thavamirundhu to Sunny's list :D

I would eventually (hopefully) add Vettaiyadu Vilaiyadu and Mayakannadi :D
