Bluffmaster: A timepass blast!

Raja Sen | December 16, 2005 13:39 IST

Okay, so what's up with Nana Patekar?

Arguably a great actor, the man has often been criticised -- with some justification -- of doing the same thing, of playing tough as nails characters with precision, but each almost indiscernible from the other.

Now, after a riveting turn in Apaharan, the actor kicks off his shoes and steals the show with effortless ease in Rohan Sippy's Bluffmaster.

The whole film tosses up twists in terms of cast. It is the unusual suspects who work the best in the movie. Riteish Deshmukh infuses spontaneity and crackle to the otherwise sluggish plot, and Priyanka Chopra is perfectly credible. The infallible Boman Irani doesn't have much room to free his comedic arms, but his chuckle-provoking abilities are right in place.

But it's the man in the middle who springs the surprise, the man in the glare of all the promotional spotlight, the man who makes you believe this isn't an ensemble film at all, the man who's done a Will Smith-esque rap and danced to a remixed Mehmood classic, the man who really wants to get a hit on his own steam. This is an Abhishek Bachchan film, but his character is too thanda to get the job done -- and the movie going -- solo.

Roy (Abhishek) is a conman, an unflappable master of disguise well versed at sussing out the ideal targets, the fish to bait. He is a perfect player, understated and inconspicuous, and scarcely puts a foot wrong. Which is what makes him ho-hum, a venerable Rahul Dravid of conmen, mechanically efficient but a decidedly inglorious vision to behold.

Therefore, when his lady love (the one truth in his web of deception), Simmi (Priyanka) walks out on his life of crime, we really don't care.

Then enter Dittu, and we're suddenly hooked. Riteish plays a younger con-artiste, a con-boy if we may, bubbling with enthusiasm and licking his lips in perpetual greed. A sharp and much-needed comedic track hops into the script, and the irrepressible Dittu takes over almost entirely, playing the bumbling protégé to Roy's straight-guy routine. Armed with neat and witty lines, Riteish is impressively natural.

Roy and Dittu set out to play the biggest fish (lots of undersea metaphors in the film, by the way) in the pond, Chandru (Nana Patekar). A man who fleeced Dittu's dad into insanity, Chandru is a masterstroke, a villain of outlandishly coloured shirts and a penchant for 'dialogues' -- with an appreciation for the same. He hears a good line, and notes it down for future use. The character is hilarious, sleazy, and impressively narcissistic, taking self-worship to a literal new plane. Brilliant.

Of course, pulling the wool over Chandru's eyes isn't simple. Roy has troubles of his own, which include wooing back Simmi and accepting the fact that a brain tumour has left him with three months to live. Add to this a watered down yet valiantly Guy Ritchie-esque supporting cast that fits neatly into the chaos and the machinations, and we're left with a pretty fun comedy.

What sets Bluffmaster apart, though, is cheek. The film's comic roots don't stray into slapstick, but crackle along by occasionally marvellous dialogue, and a brightly self-referential tone to the proceedings. Like Ocean's Twelve, it is clear that the filmmaker and his men are having a ball, and that translates to the proceedings on screen. It's a timepass blast, with some lines actually good enough to become quotable, something that is tragically rare in Hindi cinema today.

The film's music is great, with most songs playing in reduced length, and the father-tributes work, especially when we see Abhishek Bachchan in a chase sequence with his dad's Do Aur Do Paanch classic Tune abhi dekha nahin grooving in the background, and Rohan places a pivotal scene in Mumbai's Maratha Mandir -- which is playing the re-released version of his dad's Shaan.

There's a lot of Bluffmaster that leaves you cold, but it's harmless, and the lines around it make up for it. The cons and heists in the film are refreshingly original, and the film ends up a nicely made Matchstick Men, just feel-good style.

Wait for the twists, and try not to predict ahead -- this is not a serious caper film at all. The good thing is that it isn't trying to be.

Eminently watchable, but maybe it's time Abhishek Bachchan finds his shirt-buttons. And shaves.

Five reasons to watch Bluffmaster…
http://www.indiafm.com/features/2005/12 ... index.html

By IndiaFM News Bureau, December 15, 2005 - 07:52 IST
Bluffmaster! releases this Friday and is one of the year’s most awaited films. IndiaFM gives you 5 reasons why you should check out this movie.

* Abhishek Bachchan’s rap song Right Here Right Now is on top of the charts and so is the audio, which is as popular as Kalyug. We have heard papa Amitabh sing and now it’s the turn of AB jr. and he doesn’t let you down one bit. With artists contributing from all over the world, right from UK based remix specialist Trickbaby, an Iranian singer-Arash, the audio is also a must buy.

* The fresh pairing of Abhishek with the gorgeous ex-Miss World Priyanka Chopra. The chemistry between them is sparkling.

* Nana Patekar back from playing an antagonist in Apaharan to a cool-designer wardrobe type-smooth talking swindler might be the scene-stealer.

* Ritiesh Deshmukh as Abhishek’s disciple will surely teach Abhishek a thing or two in the movie. Watch him and his funny antics will surely not let you down.

* International media BBC & Time Out have praised the movie especially for the sting in its tail climax.

 I didn't understand Arash's 'Boro Boro' but this version certainely aint better! What's so special about Priyanka Chopra? and "International media"

Caught this film last night. It was a fun filled timepass movie and one of the better Bollywood releases this year. Couldn't believe it was the same director of the inane Kuch Naa Kaho. Highly recommended.

Hope the DVD is uncensored as some scenes and swearing do appear cut and bleeped.

Just comming from watching this movie and I should say its a very good movie, though the hall was hardly filled (would say 25%) but still everyone enjoyed the movie :D . Also most of people who come to theater do read reviews on Indiafm (Thanks to Moron Adarsh) who makes a good movie feel dull and the worst one to be over the top. Guys just go and watch this movie if you haven't seen yet.

The Movie does drag in the middle but it does not comes to a halt as Nana and Ritesh makes sure the correct aamount of Masala being served to you. Also, the climax of the movie is simply awesome (180 degree turn).

ROHAN SIPPY FAILS TO BLUFF AUDIENCE

By P Shukla - Eye TV India Bureau

Critic's I-view

It is not quite a riot of laughter, and yet it is an entertainer. Not quite a comedy, neither a full-fledged romance. Bluffmaster - Rohan Sippy directed and Abhishek Bachchan starrer released this Friday - is somewhere in the middle path of being a romance and a comedy.

The son of a great filmmaker like Ramesh Sippy and the son of the country's biggest superstar had tried their luck together once before with 'Kuch Na Kaho'. The film flopped despite none other than Aishwarya Rai being the heroine of the film. Rohan Sippy tried to learn and understand the pulse of the common viewers and has now come up with his second film 'Bluffmaster' once again with his childhood friend Abhishek Bachchan.

A 14-reel film, 'Bluffmaster' was hyped as the best film of the season and was promoted extensively as a unique presentation. The film does have all the ingredients of glamour, glow and glitz and yet there is something amiss that could have made it strike big at the box office.

'Bluffmaster' is a film that may be called an experiment in story narration, at least in the Indian context. The story starts with Roy (Abhishek Bachchan) appearing as a con man and trying to fleece a producer (Tinu Anand). Once established as a con man on screen, the story takes a turn and romance takes priority between Roy and Simmi (Priyanka Chopra). Roy never speaks the truth and the only thing that is true about him is that he loves Simmi by heart.

However, on the very celebration day of their engagement, the truth about Roy's identity is disclosed to Simmi. Her faith in Roy is shattered and she walks out of his life. Roy follows her everywhere to win her heart but she is adamant. That is when Dittu (Ritesh Deshmukh) makes an entry, a small time cheater who tries his hands on Roy. Roy catches him red handed and now Dittu turns his disciple.

Roy after initial hesitance accepts him as his prot駩 and teaches him the tricks of the trade of bluffing. All goes well until Chandru (Nana Patekar) enters the scene. Dittu makes Roy believe that it was Chandru who forced him to be what he is today. Roy promises to help Dittu and take revenge on Chandru. All of a sudden, a tumor is detected in Roy's brain and he is told that he has only three months to live. The shadow of death lends a change of heart and now he desires to lead a better life.

The story derives heavily from traditional Indian con films, especially so from Amitabh Bachchan's 'Majboor'. It may also be seen as a sequel to 'Bunty or Babli' minus Babli. If Bunty was from a small town of UP, Roy is from our very own Mumbai and has taken the profession as an art. He believes that he can make a fool of any one and he is so sure of having mastered this art that he boasts about it all the time.

Abhishek Bachchan plays a con man very stylishly dressed in designer clothes and wearing costly watches. Ritesh Deshmukh as Dittu wins many applauses. He has matured a lot from his past films. Nana Patekar rocks as ever and is once again marvelous in his performance. He makes life hell for both Roy and Dittu as Chandru in the film and emerges as a true performer suited for the role. Even Priyanka does not too badly. A postmortem of the film reveals that the problem lies with the story and screenplay of the film written by Sridhar Raghavan. It becomes very clear from the very second reel that the writer is losing focus.

click for larger view

Among technicians of the team, Rohan Sippy leads the brigade and other than choosing a wrong screenplay, he gets pass marks. But, this only fault makes all the difference to the film. The climax of the film also spoils all the fun and it becomes hard to understand why he chose to take a U turn at the end. Projecting Abhishek as a prey and not a 'Bluffmaster' at the end kills the very element of the film.

'Bluffmaster', thus, fails to bluff the audience and will find it very difficult to make money at the box office. The stars for the superstar Bachchan family seem to be in an adverse position. Last week, Big B's 'Ajnabee' failed and now Junior B gets the shock of the year. Maybe days will change for the Bachchan family in 2006 as Family as been postponed for a later release now.

Caught it over the weekend...my thoughts below :

Good con capers are hard to come by generally speaking in Bollywood, accentuated evermore by a severe paucity of talented writers. Along comes BLUFFMASTER to try and fill that need. The plot alas is a straight lift from a Hollywood movie, but due credit to the writers(Sridhar Raghavan & Rajat Arora) who have taken enough care to vernacularise it. Setting the story in Mumbai is pitch perfect, the city with a dark underbelly, full of tricksters, mobsters and consters. Roy(Abhishek Bachchan) is one such guy drawing parallels between his victims to the various fish available to bait in the Arabian Sea. Dittu(Riteish Deshmukh) is an upcoming swindle artist, who watches movies such as STING and quotes BONNIE & CLYDE for inspiration. Simi(Priyanka Chopra) is Roy’s love interest that is oblivious to his career choice. Life’s hip and happening for Roy until a victim of one of his cons spoils the party. The script sparkles with wit and snappy dialogues with its smart alecky ‘shaahana’ references. Director Rohan Sippy brings to life an effort reminiscent of the SNATCH(Guy Ritchie’s) school of film-making. Bachchan is sauve and classy as the protagonist, Deshmukh’s the surprise package, but the scene stealer is Nana Patekar as a bloodthirsty mobster - his lines in the climax sure to bring a smile. The swinging soundtrack of the movie is already a hit at all Desi clubs this winter. Inspite of the overall disappointment of the plot-steal, the movie does entertain, prompting one to deem it a good adaptation.
