Gabbar: Arre oh Sunil!

By: Upala KBR

Ram Gopal Varma, unperturbed by reports of the Sippys being upset with his Sholay, is going ahead with his plans of making Ram Gopal Ki Sholay.

After signing Amitabh Bachchan (as Gabbar Singh), Mohit Ahlawat (as Jai) and Abhishek Bachchan (as Veeru), Ramu has now signed action hero Sunil Shetty to play the role of Gabbar’s henchman, Sambha in his film. Says Ramu, “I have just signed Sunil Shetty to play Sambha. He plays Gabbar’s associate.”

The reason he selected Sunil for the role was because “since every character in Sholay is a legend, I wanted someone substantial to play the role. Sunil suits the character the way I envisage it.” The characterisation “will be according to the way I conceptualise it, since this will be my interpretation of Sholay and yet keep the film as close to the original as possible.”

Continues the director, “Sholay is a classic and I would like Ram Gopal Varma Ki Sholay to have the intensity and grit of the original. It’s just that the setting is different.” Ramu’s version of Sholay has an encounter cop (instead of a thakur) hiring out two petty criminals (Abhishek and Mohit) to take on Gabbar. The film will go on the floors next year.

Says Sunil, “I know I am doing very interesting roles in Ramu’s films, but have no idea as to what they are (he is also doing Ek and Darna Zaroori Hai, both with Ramu).” Ramu’s Sholay will be Sunil’s second film with him; the first was Jungle (2000).

second great casting choice by ramu -

Yadav to be new Soorma Bhopali

Kunal M Shah

Ramu's Sholay has been in the news ever since the filmmaker announced the remake of Sippy's blockbuster from the 70s. The most recent entry in the star cast is Ram's favourite, Rajpal Yadav, who will play the character of Soorma Bhopali, a role immortalised by yesteryear comedian Jagdeep.

Yadav, who is currently shooting for Priyadarshan's next film with Shahid Kapoor and Kareena Kapoor in Chennai says, “Ramu called me to offer the role and I have signed the film. I am pleased as with this film I will be working with my mentor yet again. I know it's the character of Soorma Bhopali but I am yet to discuss the variations of the character in the new version. Considering this is a modern version, I will have to find out what he has in mind for me.”

Speaking about his mentor, Yadav says, “I would even do a single shot for him in any film if he asks me to. I trust him completely as a director and will always be available to him.”[/quote]

MOLA RAM..... I don't know what made you think that mohan lal was the weakest charecter in COMPANY. I thought he did excellent with his acting along with the bang from VIVEK.

Well anyway....... only three things that are good to the new sholay remake are 1) Amithabh Bachan, 2) Mohan lal, and 3) RGV. Mohan lal being the one of the best actor in the world will rock as sanjeev kumars role. It will be interesting to see Amithabh playing a bad guy, and RGV is very excited to do this remake so I am pretty sure he will do a good job.

This movie will also get an international publicity because of amithab bachan playing the villain, and being a remake of one of the longest run film in indian history. I am very much excited to see this film, and thrilled to know that mohan lal will be in it.

Kuttappan sir, what happened to you these days. You are not "partipating" at all. I just mentioned that you are one of the zulmni's I miss and someone told me that you are here!!!

hey guys, ramu has made some great casting choices recently

abhi is now out and has been replaced by saif as veeru… excellent casting choice imo, saif is perfect for the part

and ramu has cast katrina again after ‘sarkar’ to play radha (jaya’s part) - another good casting choice, her and mohit should make a good match

I dont know about the latest casting. Katrina and Mohit are made for each other. No acting prowess shown till now.

Saif is a good choice for Dharmendra's role. Me thinks that the remake is still a bad idea unless he changes the story for modern times.

lol that is true

but jaya’s character was the quiet one(the opposite of hema)…

so not really much acting for katrina

and it is not katrina’s acting that I like :)

ya ramu said this will not be a remake but a modern update(set in modern day mumbai)

gabbar will be an underworld don
thakur will be a retired police commissioner
jai and veeru will be 2 petty criminals

it should be good, just hope ramu does some more changes to the cast (like replace amit and lal)

and ya saif is perfect (he was brilliant in ‘eht’)

hello DVDUNLIMITED, thank you for remembering me. I been very busy lately. I got a new job, and its just too much work nowadays. I haven't seen a tamil movie in 5 months. After december i will have lots of free time, and i am looking forward to buy some good tamil films from ur site. I hope you have some good collection for me :)

back to our topic, I think Sholay is going to be the biggest flop that ever going to be in Hindi cinema. Its already drawing too much attention and other than Amithab and mohan lal i don't see any good actors.

Mola, I think Katrina is hot and all, but nothing special or unique about her looks. No attraction. She isn't "cute" or over the top pretty, or beautiful IMHO, just hot. Even ugly girls with good bodies can look hot with enough alcohol, but you can't make them look cute :P

Kuttappan, Sholay might very well go on to become the biggest hits of all time. It'll all depend on how well RGV promotes the film. It's all about Marketing!!! Anyway, only time will tell.

Hey Yuvan, Don't you think SHolay gets good marketing just by theTitle? I think that will be the biggest marketing this movie can get. Then the publicity will be huge because of bachan playing gabbar singh. IMO this movie has so much expectations and very hyped media attention. I want this film to be a huge hit also because I want people to recognize mohan lal's talent :)

I think katrina is very hot with good body 8)

If it succeeds, it will only encourage more remakes of classic films. Already JP Dutta is remaking Umrao Jaan

NO NO NO!!! There gonna bring back that comedian! The new Sholay shouldn't have comedy, it will spoil it.

I wonder if they are gonna bring back 'Imaam Saheb' and 'Ahmed'? I hope they don't re-create that stupid prison sequence in the directors cut with the hitler lookalike. When I saw the director's cut, I felt sick. How can you may such a great film, so bad?....by adding comedy! By adding characters that are more characatures than anything else! Some characters you don't really need.
If RGV is gonna reacreate those scenes then I hope he dies before he get's the chance.

Did any of you guys actually like the comedy in the extended director's cut?

Katrina playing Jaya's role means she will be covered by in white for most of the movie and will say very little. Judging by Katrina's acting, it's probably best if she says very little.
