friend of mine recently came back after marriage and he got over 50 VCDs. I asked him to buy Guru for me. I just borrowed few other movies that he said is good.

Guru music is by IR right..? That was awesome. The film was awesome too.

have you see Kalapaani (*ing Mohanlal, Tabu - dir Priyadarshan)...it has excellent music by IR too...and its a great film..not typical priyan comedy.

You must be kidding right ?? - imo anniyan is no way near as good as Kadhal , infact i claim that this is the best "tamil" film this year ( its a 2005 pongal release i think) , not since sethu have i felt renewed interest in "love stories".

As far as message(s) goes -
Anniyan’s naive message is : "Anniyan will kill you if you do wrong, so everyone do good"

Kadal's message is : "Good people are bad and bad people are good, you need/have both to balance things out " a.k.a humans are inherently good and bad and the biggest "hope" of all is LOVE

Anniyan had beautiful people "acting" it out for us , while in Kadal we had ugly folks "reacting" to the situations presented to them which alone makes it more “meaningful” to me ( lot of them were non-professionals )

I can go on and on ( language, culture nuances, landscape etc) but i think this should suffice as to why i think kadahal is vastly superior "tamil" film

Except the hero, every other one involved in this movie is not a professional / amature actors. They are just real people who the director gathered for this movie. Its a wonderful movie, but again no where close to oscar.

From Tamil movies for this year, nothing qualifies same goes for telugu & hindi. I still think we had lot of good malayalam movies with much better scope have been overlooked.

Did you see Grahanam? from what I hear its a very good movie. Havent been able to catch it, so cant say much from personal experience

I think when you send film to the Oscars it should have a theme that everyone can relate to on an international level.

Kadhal- I loved it! But the conflict in the story is created by upper class lower class (untouchable) Indian mentality that non Indians cannot relate to. But it is one of the best Indian film of 2005.

Achuvinte Amma (Achu's Mom) - It's mother-daughter sentiment movie. It also has a feminist point of view. Good acting by everyone and a very down to earth movie.

Anniyan- loud, obnoxious,mass masala, silly film that should never be nominated for any awards except for may be some technical stuff (nothing Oscar worthy).

Swades - Has too much Indian patriotism.

Sachein- Why! God Why?????????*chokes on smoke** can't breath**

It should be BLACK or SWADES how the fuk they are sending PAHELI is beyond belief

I didn't see any of the good bad stuff in Kadhal. I liked it but its not all that. Scenes like the climax, the bachelors etc were just plain bad. To me it was just another film on love done differently.




That doesn't make Kadhal a better film than Anniyan.

Swades did not contain the typical Indian patriotism sentiments. In fact, it was critical of blindly deifying tradition.

Oscar viewers would recognize some scenes in Black as direct lifts from The Miracle Worker. I'm sure they would not look too kindly on a film that is based on some American work.

Anniyan was a popcorn entertainer with a "message" that was buried in the masala, but I enjoyed it as a timepass nonetheless.

Kaadhal had the typical rich-girl-poor-boy story, and while the start of the love story was not that convincing, the rest of it had an earthiness that was appealing.

I don't see what all the arguing is about, Paheli has got a great chance, just so as long as Shahrukh masters the art of under the table monetary exchange. Besides, this selection only proves India's view of national progress.

Having difficulty parsing that. As far as I see, not many indians measure progress by anyhing related to films

he meant, progress in quality film making, not as a nation I guess

and you do see huge regression along with heavy plagiarisation, and we have seen huge progress in that too!
