Last Period Film - Thank goodness! I'll be thanking "God" if I ever hear news of "Last Hindi Film"!!

'Mozart of Madras' - what say you dvdisoil??? balaji?????

someone online, at some forum mentioned something really interesting: we wouldn't care for western classical and the likes of mozart if it wasn't for Ilaiyaraaja. I don't about dvdisoil/balaji/DragunR2, but that statement applies thoroughly to me! not that I'm comparing Ilaiyaraaja to Mozart or anyone else, because I wouldn't! He is beyond anything humans can comprehend :P

IR certainly brought a WCM idiom to TFM. After listing to Thiruvasagam I checked out a couple of classical CDs from the library.

ARR may be the only one really carrying that torch in his compositions.

DragunR2

Yes indeed, I am listening to more old classic (specially 70s and 80s) and IR was heavily influenced by WCM. I probably told this many time, but saying one more time, just watch Nizhalgal.

I am now watching all IR movies :D (unfortunately most of them are by pyramid  ) and really enjoying the BGM and songs.

Well, whatever Rehman says or does!! I am confident that he was the best choice out there to do Mangal, Bose, New Benegal and ofcourse Akbar Jodha( if not attitude prob, then possibly darbar could be considered  )

Venice, heh

Best choice? imho, he is ONE of the best choices, but not the only choice. I personally wish he goes back to Tamil music as he excells in that domain. I was listening to Muthalvan yesterday - they so damn good!

and BTW, I do understand that a comparison towards the likes of Mozart doesn't necessarily mean "WCM" and could easily be intended to note innovations that these guys have brought to the world. in that respect, I truly believe that Raaja is well beyond our time/comprehension.

as for Mangal Pandey, the songs are "average" (nothing special, or of repeat value). the song I liked the most Main Vari Vari was spoiled by the movie. this song and film made me physically sick. it's not Rahman's fault. I like the holi song the most having seen the movie.

I am sorry!! if I was not able to convey my point here!
Whether Rising was Dudd!! I do not think, there was another composer from bollywood who could have churned a better turkey or dudd!
he was not able to meet or break his own set standards and expectations only.

It is always advantageous to stick to your roots, mother tongue, culture based compositions and ofcourse Rehman will be at advantage back home south!

It did occasionaly or more than that did show that he was not able to get rid of his south domain in Northern or other regional belt based music, e.g LOBS etc! He needs a very well versed director who knows his music to get the right flavour out of him!

Then again, who would you name to do music for The Rising, Boss, LOBS, Jodha etc, besides Rehman from bollywood?

Anu Malik, uttam Singh, Naushad? Reshmaiya, Vishal Shekhar, JL, Adish Shrivastav, Darbar, or Masteros Nadeem Shravans? :?:

Name a couple? So we will send Rehman to South for good then

Thats what I gotta say too. He should stop wasting his time making hindi music that no one appreciates and come back south to make his usual rocking # s.

Well did he tell you personally? No rite? How do you know what ARR said? These website and media make up half the stuff that they write. maybe ARR said something like he doesn't wanna do period films anymore. but he never said this is his last period film or anything.

Someone should tell Ashutosh that the very subject of this film guarantees failure. I for one have absolutely no interest in watching a love story about Akbar and Jodha.

I understand you guys are very touchy here!

Ireespective of, whether he said it or not? whether he put his big or small foot in his mouth!?

I am happy that atleast he is doing Shyam Bengal's Film and now Ashutosh's film, I will have some thing to look forward too on music front!
Till then Just Chill, Dus Bahane, Sajan Sajan, Salam Namaste, Choclate will give us company! :(

I so much agree with you. When I heard the song for the first time, I was so thrilled as it has the same jadoo mujra songs from old Hindi movies used to have. I expected to see some real good classical dance that would fit the period of 1857. What I saw was not much different from the usual Bollywood item songs. Really disappointed. And Saroj Khan did that? I still can't believe that fact.

Believe it or not, but at this moment, I strongly feel that Rahman's Waltz for a Romance from Lagaan's music is probably the second best Waltz composition I've heard to date, next to Strauss The Blue Danube. It's a pretty heavy statement, I realize, but I have yet to hear another composition that soo closely magnetizes my attention to itself, almost making me feel inexistance about everything else around me.

Although I'm still an amateur in listening to alot of the composition from Illayaraja's musicology(I'm still trying), nothing more powerful strikes me, and moves me, and literally freezes my state of thought than what he did for the tamil composed soundtrack of Hey Ram. I've listened to Thiruvasagam, it doesn't quite have the same affect on me as I expected.
