Not to my knowledge, no. But there are several films from or about South Asia - I'll be watching The Forsaken Land (Vimukthi Jayasundara), Memories in the Mist (Buddhadeb Dasgupta) and John & Jane (Ashim Ahluwalia).

BTW, I forgot to talk about the music for Water - Michael Dyanna (Monsoon Wedding) does the background score here (which is befitting for the most part) while Rahman has about four or five songs featured (only one is used in its entirety). They seemed decent, along the lines of his Earth soundtrack, although it's a known fact that it takes several listenings of a Rahman work to fully appreciate its value.

By the time I connected to TIFF Box office, all tickets for Mistress were sold out more than 36 hours before. For me to travel to Toronto from Ottawa (1000 Km return trip) in a hope that I might get a rush ticket and some lead actors might be present in the show that I think will be the one, is asking too much.

BTW, how long did you have to stand in Rush line??

On the TIFF site, or from any other source, there is no indication which show stars might show up, if the do at all. Moreover, Spice is first showing at Ryerson and I'm not sure whether that's a theatre where stars will show up. I assume, it's Paramount theatre that's for premiere shows. On the other hand, ticket clerk told me that Ryerson has over 1200 capacity.

BTW, on TIFF related TV programs (Rogers Cabel almost all week long) The Myth and Water has lots of coverage. (But just 1 sec glimpse of Malika in a 5 min trailor). Nothing about Mistress of Spice so far.

water will be at the vancouver film fest ait will be the first film shown, and they call it a galla, so does that mean the stars will come on the red carpet or is it just like a reg screening?

Water got very heavy coverage in the press/ TV. TIFF is all ga ga over Water.
But, the Press Conference (as seen on TV) was a dud, as compared to other film Press Conferences. Non existant main stream journalists, intelligent questioning, seating, attendance etc. Only, John Abrahm and Lisa Ray did respond well and confidently. But, even then, response depends on what kind of question was put forward at the first place.

Separately recorded interviews are much better though.

-------------------

Yes, Gala implies star studded premiere and the tickets are more expensive as well. Mistress Of Spice at TIFF is not listed as Gala premiere, but it's hard to imagine that film crew will not attend when premiering the film in a 1200 capacity theatre where all advanceable seats sold out quickly.

Let's hope "Mistress Of Spice" Press Conference, if there is one, is better.

-------------------

BTW, John Abraham has what it takes to be a hot star in Hollywood. Main stream name, good looks, good dialog/ conversation delivery in English without any accent. My guess, he will get there soon.

So far, I have seen no coverage on Mistress Of Spice on the TV channel that's covering TIFF 24 hrs a day.
(Agreed, I don't watch that channel 24 hrs a day, but have seen coverage repeated tens of times for the events that do get covered; Specially, the Press Conferences. )

It's the Rogers Cable (Community/ Rogers) channel.
Rogers is big in TV/ Video. They have cable monopoly in Toronto, Ottawa and perhaps in most of Ontario. They have giant Rogers Video chain as well.

In Ottawa, they have ch 22 for English and channel 23 for Rogers/ community programming. TIFF coverage has been on Cable Ch 22 (Ottawa; may be a different cable channel in other cities) round the clock.

indiatimes.com describes Mistress Of Spice premiere at TIFF as a low key, quite event. (Aish did not come for the premiere).

http://people.indiatimes.com/quickieart ... h's~latest

I wonder whether the theatre (1200 seater x 3 shows) really was sold out as I found out from the booking clerk (I tried so hard 36 hrs straight starting from the earliest booking time)??
I don't believe 3600 people saw Mistress Of Spice and it's described as Low Key.

I guess, they didn't want to fill the theatre?? Or, someone goofed.

Just off from TV pgm "Talk Ottawa" featuring one hour long interview with Deepa Mehta and her daughter Devyani who wrote a book on making of Water (280 pages or did she say 240 pages; both were/ are in Ottawa for Writer's fest; even the book has been getting rave reviews).

BTW, this talk-interview was much more professional than the press conference at TIFF.

Deepa mentioned Water will be opening on Nov 4, 2005 in Canada.
She did mention Grand Premiere in Toronto, Vancouver, Ottawa. May be in other cities too.

Then to Europe.

And then, in March 2006, in the US.

Looks like limited release with premiers wherever the film gets released. I thought, with the amount of publicity and critical acclaim Deepa got, she mighty very well have opted for a wide release. But, going the "art film release" route, at least there is no chance of a flop.

Too tired to write an entire review, but here are some quick thoughts:

- This is undoubtedly her best film; she's avoided sensationalism and preachiness (for the most part) and delivered a somber and uncompromising tragedy about oppressive and hierarchical structures that are doomed to repeat themselves unless we have the courage to stop them.
- Major influence here is obviously Ray's Pather Panchali; the widowed matriarch is a familiar figure here, and Chuiya's (the little eight-year-old widow) innocence and mischieviousness recalls the way Ray followed the brother-sister team of Apu and Durga.
- Cinematography is stunning! The visual look of the film totally immerses you in this world; when it finished, I was taken aback to see myself back in a clean, air-conditioned theatre.
- The cast is uniformally excellent; Seema Biswas is flawless in depicting a character torn between her conscience and her faith. Sarala as the little girl is excellent as well, handling range with the talent of a pro. John Abraham adds strong support; he disappears into the role beautifully. Lisa Ray is adequate, however; she is too beautiful for this role, so much so that it stretched credibility at times. Raghuvir Yadav (as a eunuch) rocks in a small role, and Waheeda Rehman and Kulbhushan Kharbanda (!) have cameos.
- However, the flaw in this film is that Mehta all-too-often spills the subtext into the screenplay. Her images speak for themselves, but characters reitterate what we've already realized long before. What's more, the underlying political thread surrounding Gandhi, independence and modernization is too transparent and obvious. I much preferred the film's inital "fly-on-the-wall" approach, simply documenting the daily ongoings of an ashram.
- Still, this is a potent and effective effort.
- Mehta does leave us ultimately with a small shred of hope, but we can never forget the images of hellish inequality that came before... As one widow in the ashram put it - which may be the understatement of the year - "Life is such a disappointment".

I agree with you on most accounts. I saw the film a few days back and its by far Deepa Mehta's best film; its alot more compassionate and illusive than anything shes ever done, certainly(and thankfully) abstains from carving that "all men are jerks" philosophy previously visible from Fire. Its exotically beautiful, its an experience more on the same lines of Sivan's Terrorist & Asoka as oppose to any of Ray's more ethereal/poetic visuals. Though, nothing wrong with the former either.

Mehta claims that the music of Water is the best thing Rahman's ever done. I sure as hell hope she's right, although the two and a half composition peek we got from the film didn't sound as if Rahman ripped it apart. Still, this is A.R.-Fucking-Rahman.

Saw somewhere that Audio CD will be releasing in Dec 2005.

Don't expect worldwide release though. It's a small film, circulating in limited release, a few cities at a time. Perhaps the same for CD.

BTW, film seems to be doing fine in it's Canadian screenings. In it's sixth week, it is still same # of shows as in the prev 5 weeks of aprox 50 shows daily in Toronto. In Ottawa and Montreal as well it's showing juswt with the same # of shows as in the previous weeks.
