you are definitely right dvdisoil, this whole fascination with remakes does seem to be a wave which is going through both hw and bw

and they can definitely go very wrong

I was unfortunate enough to see one of my all time fav classics (‘manchurian candidate’(1962)) being absolutely butchered last year in the horrible denzel remake

but I think w/ a director like ramu it is in good hands - and ‘sholay’ was a horrible film anyways… it can only get better w/ a remake

anyways guys, the casting has begun - mohit is jai - great choice imo

Not sure if this is true or not but this is coming from the James movie preview over at Rediff.com:

Quote:
What is James all about?

Two words: Mohit Ahlawat.

Ram Gopal Varma has never been as excited about any of his finds as this stubble-sporting bundle of biceps. In fact, Mohit will play Amitabh Bachchan's Jai in Ramu's remake of Sholay....

This is his pic:

anyways abhi now to play veeru -

Quote:
A pleasantly surprised Abhishek on taking on dad's Gabbar in Ramu's Sholay

Subhash K Jha

At first my response was, 'Who me?'” says Abhishek Bachchan about Ram Gopal Varma's seemingly strange decision to cast him as Veeru in Sholay. “But then Ramu can be so persuasive. I decided to go along with any decision that he takes,” he adds.

Veeru, for those who came in late, was the character that Dharmendra played in the original Sholay. Veeru's bum-chum Jai was played by Abhishek's father Amitabh Bachchan. So wouldn't it have made more sense to cast Abhishek as Jai? Ramu disagrees, “I certainly don't want to go by predictable patterns of casting…not in any of my films and certainly not in Sholay where one false casting manoeuvre can ruin the entire equation. Abhishek playing his dad's role is just what audiences expect. If I do that, I might as well go the whole hog and cast Sunny or Bobby as Dharmendra's son, Esha Deol as Basanti and Amjad Khan's son as Gabbar Singh. The idea is to stay many steps ahead of audiences' expectations. Abhishek as the extroverted, talkative comic Veeru strikes me as perfect. We've already seen Abhishek do the brooding intense silent act in Sarkar. I think a role where he needs to expand on his real-life personality is just what's required. I've seen how good Abhishek played the comic gregarious soul in Bunty Aur Babli. As Veeru I'd get him to move ahead in the same devilishly mischievous direction.”

So, is new 'Veeru' excited about being in Sholay? “Who wouldn't be? It's one of the greatest films ever made. This time I'll get a chance to stand opposite dad. That should prove quite a challenge.”

They're all bad choices for the remake. It's a bad idea to remake it anyway but this is a bad trend that's happening. Re-makes of indian movies, what a wast. Thats' just my two cents.

The almost constant copying of HW and general repetitiveness was bad enough, but directly remaking old films is even worse. At this stage it is possible that the remakes of Sholay, AAA, Umrao Jaan, etc. won't even get made, but just their announcements are disturbing.

lal now to play thakur!

I dunno abt you guys, but my excitement for this project has now considerably decreased…

I thought lal was the only weak part of ‘company’ and now he is thakur
and though I thought amit was good in/as ‘sarkar’, but he is too old to play gabbar imo

I hope ramu proves me wrong with this, but I am really not liking how this casting is going...

Mohanlal returns to Hindi cinema…to play Sanjeev Kumar's role in Ramu's Sholay

Subhash K Jha

He is undoubtedly one of the best actors this country has produced. Soft-spoken, affable and gentle to the point of making you wonder how he could have played that passionate spectrum of characters in Malayalam – ranging from Akare and Chithram to Minnaram and Nirnayam…

Mohanlal's Hindi-film appearance as the cerebral and intriguing police commissioner in Ram Gopal Verma's Company was widely appreciated. But it didn't really translate into a floodgate of opportunities in Hindi cinema for the self-effacing actor.

“I wasn't really offered anything exciting. And if I work in a language with which I'm not fully at home, I need to work with directors like Priyadarshan (with whom I did Kala Paani in Hindi) and Ramu whom I'm comfortable with.”
Now Mohanlal is all set to return to Hindi cinema…in Sholay, or shall we say Ram Gopal Varma ka Sholay. “And again, I'm all set to play a cop,” laughs Mohanlal.

And how excited is the versatile Mohanlal about playing the seething Thakur with the amputated hand in Sholay? “Ramu is a man of many ideas. When he called me up to offer the role of the Thakur in Sholay, I wasn't very sure of how to react. Sholay is a film that I've seen more than once. Every character is so deeply embedded in the audience's mind. I wonder what Ramu will do!”

Mohanlal is also aware that his antagonist in the film will be played by none other than Amitabh Bachchan. “Bachchanji as Gabbar Singh is really a thought that charges all my batteries. I've worked with the four greatest Southern stalwarts – Sivaji Ganesan, Prem Nazir, Raj Kumar, and Nageswara Rao. Bachchanji is like all four rolled into one, and more. It would be a truly exceptional experience to work with him in Sholay.”

Is he looking at bettering Sanjeev Kumar's performance in the original? “Not really. I don't know what Ramu has in mind. I do know he's shifting the backdrop to the city. So there'll be inbuilt changes. My interpretation of the cop's role will be my own.”

Adds Ram Gopal Varma, “After deciding on Mr. Bachchan for Gabbar Singh, I needed someone with a lot of understated self-confidence and a quality of thehrao in his personality to play the Thakur. In Mohanlal, I saw the same qualities that made Sanjeev Kumar so memorable in Sholay. Of course he'll play the role in his own way. This is Ram Gopal Varma ka Sholay, remember?"

MOLA RAM..... I don't know what made you think that mohan lal was the weakest charecter in COMPANY. I thought he did excellent with his acting along with the bang from VIVEK.

Well anyway....... only three things that are good to the new sholay remake are 1) Amithabh Bachan, 2) Mohan lal, and 3) RGV. Mohan lal being the one of the best actor in the world will rock as sanjeev kumars role. It will be interesting to see Amithabh playing a bad guy, and RGV is very excited to do this remake so I am pretty sure he will do a good job.

This movie will also get an international publicity because of amithab bachan playing the villain, and being a remake of one of the longest run film in indian history. I am very much excited to see this film, and thrilled to know that mohan lal will be in it.
