Are Pakistani films shown in India?

There are no restriction on Pakistani films being shown in India. Pakistani films are classified as any other foreign film and the same conditions and restrictions apply. If Pakistani films are not regularly shown in India, it is because no one sees a market for them and not because of any government restrictions. By the way the same applies to Pakistani artistes, who also are not treated any differently than any other foreign artistes, unlike Pakistan where Indian movies and Indian artistes are explicitly banned.

Here is an interesting fact. When Prime Minister Vajpayee visited Pakistan a few years ago, he had carried a whole bunch of Indian movie DVDs as gifts for General Musharraff. The reason I know this is because the DVDs were sourced thru me.

Yes they are not being shown in India...but no reason why they cannot be screened..but in all probability, in its present scenario, no chance of Pakistani films being screened in India...maybe in the future.

I have heard that the Pakistani version of Umrao Jaan is better than the Indian version..
Any way to get the dvd with english subtitles fr the Pakistani version.

It's not available on DVD but is available on VHS distributed by Apollo. However, the Pakistani version detracts from the novel so the Indian version is more genuine. I saw it a long time ago ... before the Indian version was made. The TV drama (I hear) is very good ... I haven't seen this for myself though.

On the subject of Pakistani movies in general ... I haven't seen any of the recent ones and I doubt very much that most of them are worth watching. Some of the older movies from the 50's and 60's, however, are superb. Much more experimental and progressive than Indian movies of the same time. Actresses such as Shamim Ara made numerous movies that really should be viewed by a wider audience.

Seems to me that Pakistani films are not acceptable to the Indian audience

Not quite.
Look, how popular Pakistani Dramas are.
Look how much Punjabi films from Pakistan are loved. If not available on film, then on Video.

My understanding is that whatever is status of Bollywood Hindi/ Urdu films in India, same is Punjabi films in Pakistan. i.e. Bollywood Hindi/ Urdu Films have higher production values in India (Punjabi films are grade 'B' in comparison) and it's Punjabi films in Pakistan that have higher production values as compared to their Urdu films.

But in the old days the Urdu and Punjabi films had very similar production values.

To speak of production values etc ... take a look at this web-site where several classic films are reviewed:

http://films.hindi-movies-songs.com/k-anwar.html

These are classic Pakistani movies directed/produced by Khurshid Anwar.

Reviews of the following films: Intezar (1956), Zehr-I-Ishq (1958), Jhoomar (1959), Ghoonghat (1962), Chingari (1964), Hamraz (1967) and Heer Ranjha (1970). The links to the reviews can be found towards the bottom of the page.
