Still bollywood is in distress rana!

Yes, that's what the buzz is.

But, it puzzles me when Ajay Devgan stated that none of the flop films that he distributed lost any money. All made profit.

It's well known all Ajay Devgan distributed films were/ are declared big flops. Still the distributor didn't loose any money??

BTW, I'm referring to a news article on/ about Ajay Devgan that I saw Yesterday on one of the main Indian Internet pages. I can't find it today. If anyone comes across it, please post.

Thanks.

Box-Office verdict: Average (Strictly)

Wow, they changed the BO status from flop to "strictly Average".
Next step; change from "strictly average" to "likely Hit" and later to ----??

I wish so too!

Now, it's A1 (Hit; 75% to 125% return) in Mumbai, A (Semi Hit) in Mysore and Bengal.

BOX OFFICE UPDATE-26th February 16.00 IST

Black continues its great business in the big cities. The film looks set to do A1(Hit) business in Mumbai and A(Semi Hit) business in West Bengal and Mysore.

The following is the most clear admission of BLACK a hit by the same people (sify/ Indiafm) who called it a flop for long time.

http://www.samachar.com/film/fullstory.html

Sify Movies

The stunning success of Sanjay Bhansali’s Black seems to have changed the course of Hindi cinema, at least for a while.

----------------------------

BTW, in its 6th?? week, US Box Office collections of Black were more than previous week's. And that's when Black is still targetted at Desi audience. As the film is mainly in English, let's see if it makes to the main stream theatres and how audiences receive it?? If it succeeds there, sky is the limit.

Black BO verdict was posted at http://www.boxofficeindia.com/ site about a week back.
They say, it's expected result, where as, the #s seem to be actual to that date only. (If they say, it's expected result, then they should be summing up the Geometric Progression series).

These are the posted #s:

BOX OFFICE UPDATE-21st March 16.00 IST

BLACK BOX OFFICE RESULTS

Territory Cost* Distributor Share** ROI Classification
Mumbai 3,60,00,000 6,50,00,000 +81 A1
Delhi/UP 2,00,00,000 2,75,00,000 +38 BB
East Punjab 55,00,000 70,00,000 +40 BB
West Bengal 75,00,000 1,35,00,000 +80 A1
Bihar 2,00,000 3,00,000 +50 A
Rajasthan 30,00,000 25,00,000 -17 FLOP
CP Berar 18,00,000 22,00,000 +22 B1
CI 20,00,000 20,00,000 0 B
South 1,15,00,000 1,75,00,000 +52 A
ALL INDIA 8,75,00,000 13,75,00,000 +57 A

*including print and publicity

**expected as still showing on 70 odd prints
---------------------------------------
Note that ALL INDIA 8,75,00,000 13,75,00,000 +57 A reflects actual #s till 6th week and not the expected ones as they say.

Also see how close it is achieving an 'A' status in Delhi/UP and East Punjab. It sure will get there.
BTW, Black got Tax free status in UP but not in Delhi. Veer Zara did get Tax Free in Delhi, UP and other places.

If they do predict BO verdict based on Geometric Progression, what will they say when weekly gross goes up, as in the case of Overseas??
 (Infinity is the result).

Since the first week, Black has done stready theatrical business in the US.
It's 7th weekend gross is 34% higher than 6th week's.
http://www.boxofficemojo.com/weekend/ch ... =12&p=.htm

59 61 Black Yash $38,922 +34.0% 13 - $2,994 $733,094 - / - 8

BLACK is Tax Free, finally, in all these states in India. (But, not in Delhi):

http://www.planetbollywood.com/News/n033105-112659.php

Sanjay Leela Bhansali´s critically and commercially acclaimed Amitabh-Rani starrer ´Black´ , has been granted exemption from payment of entertainment tax by the Rajasthan government with immediate effect(last week) .

The movie has also got entertainment tax exemption in Maharashtra for a period of 6 months , an order that came into effect from 23rd March .

It may be recalled that ´Black´ is already tax-free in Uttar Pradesh

I just got back from Delhi couple of days ago. I happened to watch Black last week there in one of the multiplex chains and it was tax free. the standard ticket which is Rs 150 had come down to about 90 Rs. The theatre was about 70% full despite the movie being around for such a long time.

Black was an awesome movie, but I still don't know about an Oscar. And I thought that for movies nominated for the best foreign film category had to mostly be in the language of the country of origin. Black had a LOT of English. I don't know if it may qualify!

Plus, just to add, Shabd was one of the worst movies I have seen in a while. The performances themselves were horrid, especially by that kid from MHN. What a dork!

Probably wouldn't qualify anyways, since parts of it are straight from The Miracle Worker.

Was it Delhi proper or it's suburbs that are in Haryana or UP. Like, Gurgaon, Ghaziabad, Noida.

Black may still qualify for an Oscar, even though parts are taken from 'Miracle Worker.' There have been many Hollywood movies that were adaptations/remakes of prior films and they have won Oscars or were given Oscar nominees. ie: Hamlet-the first remake to win Oscar best picture, Ben Hur, Oliver, My Fair Lady etc.
Let's hope the Oscars will give 'Black' a fair chance to qualify. 8)

Those films don't count as remakes of prior films because they are adaptations of novels or Shakespeare or plays. The Miracle Worker was indeed a play originally, so Black may qualify. I don't know what percentage of it was English, but I don't think it was enough to disqualify it.

Our voters had predict voted for Shabd and Black both to be hits, before the release of these films. Black received universal critical acclaim and has gone on to become a Hit and may achieve Super Hit staus eventually. Shabd was a critical and Box Office disaster.

But, finally some exciting honours for Shabd. Obviously, the film was not suitable or liked by Indians, but it has received a rare and prestigeous honour:

Shabd bestowed with rare honour

http://www.indiafm.com/scoop/05/apr/080 ... ndex.shtml
Whether it worked at the box office or not, Leena Yadav's debut Shabd starring Sanjay Dutt, Aishwarya Rai and Zayed Khan has been selected for an honour which only 7 movies from India have received so far.

The Margaret Herrick Library, the official library of the Academy Motion Pictures Arts and Science, has selected Shabd. Most of the Oscar nominated and selected scripts are part of the library. The library is one of the most talked about where students refer to scripts from across the world.

A thrilled Leena Yadav says, “ I am very proud that our hard work has been appreciated and it reinforces our belief in the script regardless of its box office results, I am delighted by this honour.”

Some of the other film that are a part of the library are Shatranj Ke Khiladi, Lagaan, Kal Ho Na Ho, etc.

---------------------------

BTW, Shabd may not have been liked by family audiences, any youngster I talk to, seem to have liked it immensely.
