Ok, I'll try and describe the problems:

In close up scenes the AR looks better but in non-closeup scenes the people look thinner and longer.

Certain objects in the background look like they are shaky (for examples the wall designs, trees etc

The text on the menus seem like they are shaky

Now, mind you, some parts of the movie are extremely clear while others are not.

I have a Toshiba 65" widescreen and own a lot of DVDs, therefore I am used to how a 2:35 by 1 ratio fits on my screen and this one is definately neither 2:35 by 1 nor 16:9. Its somewhere in between.

I would have thought that maybe I got a fake copy except that like most YR films DVDs, the subtitles automatically show up during songs.

Any comments are welcome :)

DVD encoding is 100% Field Averaged. Main feature is 3 hrs and 5 min (as per DVD player clock). How long was the theatrical version?? If it's 4% speed shifted then it's PAL to NTSC converted field averaged. If no speed shift, then somehow they managed to field average it  NTSC to NTSC encoding??
Anyway, original film frames can't be extracted back by any algorithm.

I'm sure for a film like Veer Zaara, there will be a Diaphana Devdas type French or German version available, eventually. Worth waiting for that one.

Found the answer myself from the DVD cover that lists it as 192 min. This confirms a 4% speed shift that's normal for PAL telecine. So, it's a PAL to NTSC converted field averaged DVD.

With the # of DVDs that they will sell, and their reason for PAL telecine that it's cheaper and the main cost component, why not produce a batch of PAL DVD, for PAL countries, as PAL telecine is already available?? At least let the PAL countries and quality concious fans enjoy a proper DVD??

With this current release Bollywood remain a joke to the western world. This DVD is so subpar and they actually get the Indian community in America to pay an average of $21-25 for this very poor release. It is probably one of the worst DVDs I have purchased, and will keep me from buying Indian DVDs for quite some time. Shame on the Indian studios for screwing their audience like this!

Knowledge of ones ignorance is a blessing, for it means that we know our anchor in life. ;)

Hey I'm a simple brit living in the USA. I've purchased maybe 25 Indian DVDs in my time. And sure none of them are really going to win any major awards for quality. But Veer Zaara was supposed to be a so called statement piece from Yash Chopra a highly respected director in India. What do we get? Well in comparison to the theatrical presentation that I saw, this DVD is garbage. Interlaced to death and totally lacking in fine detail. What a shame.

I'm dumbfounded that the Indian community accepts this and bootlegs as the norm. And that people willingly pay more for a Yash Raj film than an Hollywood SE DVD.

Its a shame. Because I like the spirit of Indian film. It has a long way to go. But India could produce some real statement pieces with the amount of money and support Bollywood has from fellow Indians. Instead, what do you get? You folks must have plenty of good karma!

I will probably borrow Black, rather than risk any purchase. And I will pass this DVD back to the shop where I purchased it.

I looked at it this weekend and i also have a complaint. Towards the second half of the movie the sound dropped to the background. It sounded like i was listening to old vhs copy of a movie if you know what i'm talking about. At least a quarter of the movie sounds like that.

Review of the DVD on DVDtimes by Stephen Horne

Quote:
Video

The video for this DVD release from Yash Raj Films is something of a mess. The source is taken from an interlaced PAL to NTSC conversion and presented in an incorrectly framed anamorphic widescreen aspect ratio of 2.17:1 (stretched from 2.35:1, making the actors appear skinny). There is a large amount of aliasing and edge enhancement present as well as a fair bit of dirt, grain and MPEG compression problems. Colour and contrast rendition is well done for the most part, but this hardly makes up for such a shoddy DVD transfer.

Audio

The Hindi Dolby Digital 5.1 track on offer is clear and packs a punch, sounding very nice indeed when played back through the proper equipment. The only problem to report is that the audio has been pitch-corrected and so occasionally sounds slightly garbled, but this is never distracting.

Ratings;
video 5/10
audio 7/10
extras 5/10
overall 5/10

My own opinions of the film aside, Yash Raj Films have definitely done an injustice to the many fans of Veer-Zaara with this second-rate, over-priced DVD set. One would think that with all the money the corporation has made from the movie, it would invest some of it back into producing a high quality disc to raise the standard of Indian DVDs, but nope. Until the rights expire, this unfortunately looks to be the only option on DVD for Veer-Zaara

But With one correction the expiration of the rights guarantees nothing! The ever consistent world of Bollywood! Will be the same crap by any other Company. Thats life!
