I saw this PVR Cinemas site recently and was surprised to see a few things.

One of PVR Cinemas being the good old PLAZA in Connaught Place, New Delhi.
As per the site, it was reopened recently. It must have gone out of business and PVR bought it now. It's a 300 seater now. Seats are listed as Stadium seating.

This Plaza Cinema that I know of from 70s - early 80s was a thriving 700-800 seater.

Other Cinemas listed under PVR are all Multiplex Stadium type, and all with 100 to 350 seating, same as in North America these days. Delhi cinemas of old days were normally 700 to 1200 seaters.

Is this the sequence and trend in Indian Cinemas that with the arrival of Home Video, most Cinemas went out of business and are now being taken over by Cinema chains and revived with latest trend of stadium seating and good projection and audio?? Are all/ most cinemas in India have reduced # of seating 100 - 400?? What about screen size??

ABOUT PVR PLAZA
A recent addition to the PVR Group is the May 2004 re-opening of Delhi's oldest and most popular cinema hall Plaza, aka PVR Plaza. Located in the heart of Connaught Place the single screen auditorium has been renovated and refurbished to bring back its former glory.

PVR Plaza has a seating capacity of 300 seats
It captures the grand cinema experience reminiscent of the Raj
The cinema's state-of-the-art cinema viewing technologies include digital sound, a wide screen and stadium seating

Yes, multiplexes are the future of cinema in India as they are everywhere else in the world. As for screen sizes, they differ from theater to theater depending on number of seats etc. Some Multiplexes have couple of larger screens and the rest small ones. By the way PVR is one of the worst cinema chains in terms of quality, although they are the largest and oldest multiplex chain in India.

Actually we can pretty much add all the Indian DVD manufacturers to the list.
