BOX OFFICE UPDATE-31stJanuary 18.00 IST
This week the trade awaits Black and Shabd.Black looks set to be a media favourite with 4 and 5 star reviews but will the public buy it? Shabd has a good cast in Sanjay Dutt and Aishwarya Rai but insiders suggest the film has been a rush job.

----------------------------

Toronto's Albion Woodside Cinemas have BLACK as upcoming films but no mention of SHABD.

Ottawa Mayfair theatre is booked for some 'Big' film, don't know which one.

What do you think of the outcome of both films??

Black and Shabd, both are showing at Albion Woodside, with Black getting more shows. Showtimes in other cities as well have lot more shows for Black.

So, Black definitely gets a bigger release and hence must be more expensive of the two. Also, it has to collect much more than Shabd to get a similar profit/ loss status.

My guess will be Shabd, despite its adult theme, doing better as far as profit/ loss is concerned.

'BLACK' week at theatres all over

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
By Manisha Deshpande

After the excitement over the box-office response to PAGE 3, it is the advance booking for BLACK, which is the talk of the trade. According to Mumbai distributor, Kumar Mangat of Devgan Entertainments, the terrific advance booking for the film is likely to translate into an exceptional opening response in Mumbai. "There has been a mad rush among exhibitors to book the film both in Mumbai and Gujarat over the past two weeks. Such is the craze that multiplexes have decided to have as many as 6-8 shows of the film. It looks like the film will be the second major success of the year," Mangat says, adding that he is releasing the film with 86 prints in Mumbai circuit.

Besides Devgan Entertainments, the distribution office of Ram Gopal Varma is keenly monitoring the advance booking for the film in Nizam, where it is releasing it. "We are releasing the film with a limited number of prints, 8 to be precise. We could have very well made the best out of the strong reports that the film was carrying but we did not want to kill the film's prospects by flooding the market with prints. We have acquired some of the best theatres and the advance booking is something to talk about," says Riaz, General Manager, Distribution, RGV Films.

According to Riaz, his office was flooded with queries for the film ever since the one-minute theatrical trailer of BLACK started showing all over. "It was a very small trailer with few images, which gave a brief overview of the film but nevertheless a smart move from Bhansali. At times, film-makers in their enthusiasm end up showing a lot and killing the prospects of the film in the process," Riaz says.

There does not seem to be any anxiety over the fact that BLACK is a song-less film. "We are long past that stage where the entertainment value of films was decided primarily by songs. "On the contrary, song-less films make great sense when they are story-driven and have a point to prove. BHOOT marked the beginning of that genre and it has continued ever since," Riaz adds.

Meanwhile the exhibition circle in Mumbai is in a jubilant mood over the advance booking. "It is the BLACK week at all theatres in Mumbai and the mood is definitely one of excitement," says Arun Sharma, General Manager, Programming, INOX.

But, IN TORONTO, Shabd gets the prestigeous Square One (DD) 3 shows daily (along with Desi Cinemas Albion Woodside). And Black resigned to Desi Cinemas only.

BTW, Kisna is still showing in its 3rd week at Cineplex Odeon in Toronto and Des Ho Ya Pardes is in its 4th week at Cineplex Odeon. Both films in proper DD.

First Day First Show Audience Reaction:

SHABD
http://www.indiafm.com/broadband/05/feb ... ndex.shtml

By IndiaFM News Bureau, Feb 4th, 2005 - 2000 hrs IST

The audience word for Shabd.

“Maha boring aur talkative movie hai. First day first show main bhi picture houseful nahi gayi hai”. Now if the audience reaction for a film opens with a comment like this and the consistency continues with the audience pouring out of the cinema-hall, what do you expect from the film?

The opening show of Shabd at the Eros Cinema, Mumbai has found anything but a favorable response with the audience. Pritish Nandy Communications’ effort to entertain the audience with a different theme has disappointed the moviegoers big time.

Moreover the film has failed to strike a chord both with the classes and the masses. Says a female, “We have walked out” and garnishes her reaction with words like ‘awful’ and ‘terrible’. However the viewers are in all praise for Sanjay Dutt and Aishwarya Rai. Zayed has not got his good share though. “He’s artificial and wasted”, comment a sibling-duo in unison.

The first words for Leena Yadav’s Shabd are not encouraging enough.

BLACK
http://www.indiafm.com/broadband/05/feb ... ndex.shtml

By IndiaFM News Bureau, Feb 4th, 2005 - 2000 hrs IST

Black might be a brave effort at cinema but the booking charts at Liberty scream otherwise. With close to zero advance booking for the film, the film has stepped on an unsettling start. But duality being a permanent aspect with films, people who have come to the theatres hold some very encouraging news for Sanjay Leela Bhansali.

Moviegoers coming out from the show peg Black as a masterpiece. When asked about whether the film has met their expectations, audiences are eager to admit that the film has met their expectations and some more…

Audiences don’t shy from heaping praise on the performances either. Ticket buyers have embraced Rani Mukherjee’s performance in a big way. “Rani is brilliant. She is going to sweep all the awards,” remarks an excited 34-year old. “She is ‘Rani’ in the truest sense. Mind blowing performance!” a teenager enthused. Amitabh is crowned as being exceptional. A middle-aged woman doesn’t hesitate from calling Big B’s act as the teacher being his ‘career best performance’.

As for Bhansali, the majority says that the film has been ‘very-well-made’. But the warm response that stayed with us was when a couple said, “With Black, we have reached cinematic excellence. This is a film that can be showcased on a global platform,” they added. When we nudged the couple as to whether they think Sanjay’s effort will make it to the Oscars, they replied, “We’ll keep our fingers crossed”

People have loved it, lets see if box-office follows suit…

--------------------------------

Apparantly Black is going to be a Super Hit as it sure will pick up with word of mouth publicity. (It did not go House Full on the First Day).

Shabd is Maha Flop in India. Indian Audience is not ready for this kind of films. Let's see how Shabd does Overseas where it's screening in many main stream cinemas??

Are you referring to Black or Shabd??
There is a lot on Black, but not much on Shabd.
(also see viewtopic.php?t=7402)
BTW, Rediff review of Shabd is not as bad as Indiafm's.

Well, critics' review is one thing and audience acceptance another. Usually if critics don't like a film, it's a good news for the Box Office prospectus. Looks like India is not ready for films like Shabd, critics or audience. It might do better in Overseas.

Rana, should we contact medics to administer you a tranquilizer to calm the nerves, hmmm? :D

Especially now since Zibawala aka: Kutte Ke Tatte has returned to create more havoc!

sure!! you should review all of your posts and others and see what kinda language got originated from where?

you just started the same puss litter in this thread too.

draging rana, theon, james bond eyc into things wont help, if you ask me?

you should look at your language/style and learn how to be respectful to others and I am positive you will get atleast the same or more.

I dont believe in forums becoming personal bitching/bickering duels myself, but every one should know their limits and boundaries of decency and staying to the topic and to the point to the thread.

If you would like to invite/include this kinda foul/stinky bickering in all threads, then I dont think there is any recourse!!

I accept my responsibility, but it all started by your her highness bickering. :?:

I feel, it is a big loss and pitiful for zulm.net to loose all valuable patrons in the past just because of behavioral problems.

As it could be seen, I am not intentionally using any mean/offensive emoticons at my disposal, either just out of good will and good faith.

I suggest every one should take a moment and think how can they contribute towards zulm.net's success not doom!

peace! 8)

Shabd has a fresh star cast, but film will be hard to sell thematically, and I found Shabd music just luke warm, hard to stir around things.

Now BLACK will be a real stuff will be critically acclaimed solid product.

But as it lacks commercial, mass appeal of masala, candy floss, cheesy flicks.I expect this not to ring cash registers all the way to jingles either.

Generally, I have seen Indian/overseas fan to give cold shoulders to thoughtful, thought provoking good films. They will stand in line for 3 hrs to watch VZ and MSK but not BLACK, MAQBOOL, RAINCOAT, ZUBAIDA, KHAMOSHI, PAGE 3 etc :?: when this will change? only time will answer.

But, despite all this brilliance what goes against Black is the fact that its looks are very grim and depressive. Audience coming for pure entertainment will feel let down. But, if Bollywood has to move ahead with time we will be open to experiments like this. A must watch for those who like different cinema.

I think, bollywood needs to grow up too, as well as audiences.
