Official Opening Night Premiere of Bride and Prejudice!

Ziegfeld Theater
141 West 54th Street
New York, NY 10019
website | directions

The city's most famous and historic movie palace! There is no bad seat! The Ziegfeld is one of the very few remaining single-screen monster movie theaters in the city, and it's beautiful. It seats around 1200 people, has a screen bigger than an indoor soccer field, velvet draped walls, and seats so comfortable you want to take them home with you. This is the kind of place you want to go to see a big-time movie. The only trouble is that frequently the theater is used for movie premieres, the kind with red carpet and celebrities pouring out of limousines, so on certain nights, you won't be able to get in. Named after Florenz Ziegfeld, "The Most important and influential producer in the history of Broadway musical."

My quick thoughts from my journal:

Bride and Prejudice [Gurindher Chadha, 2005] *1/2 (37 / D)
This is a horrible, horrible movie. Bend it Like Beckham may have been loud and crass, but Chadha's follow-up is just offensive. Jane Austen purists - stay away. This "adaptation" makes two fatal alterations from the book (related to the lead casting choices). D'arcy (The Ring's Martin Henderson) is supposed to be an arrogant and unlikable prick (at least initially), but here he's baffingly neutered and softened right from his introduction. Lalita's (Elizabeth in the novel - played by Rai here) dislike of him stems from misunderstandings and manipulation of his words rather than his pride. As for Rai's character, she espouses Indian self-respect and about how D'arcy is missing out on the "real" India. However, Rai looks nothing like the typical Indian woman; she spends the film talking in a pseudo-British accent and always looks runway-chic Westernized. "Real" India indeed. What's worse, she passionately defends arranged marriage and custom but secretly dreams of (in a musical sequence no less!) being whisked away by a white man, married in a church and being Anglicized! But even Chadha's appalling mixed messaging aside, this production reeks of big budget over-indulgence. The direction is always awkward, the acting forced (Nadira Babbar as the overbearing mother is the only member of the cast who is successful with this lame material), and the less said about the musical numbers, the better (one song is called "No Life... Without Wife"). Most of them - like the aforementioned - are in English, which make for embarrassing lyrics and even worse lip-synching. I don't know what Chadha was going for here, but it certainly does not come across as a parody of Austen or a well-intentioned entertainer. It's simply bad.

Ash on David Letterman

http://www.rediff.com/movies/2005/feb/03ash.htm

Aishwarya Rai will feature on one of America's most famous talk shows, David Letterman's Late Show next week. The interview, to be aired on February 9, comes two days ahead of the US premiere of Rai's film, Bride And Prejudice.

Airing on the CBS television network, the Emmy Award-winning programme marks the actress' first appearance on an American late night talk show.

The former Miss World was profiled on CBS Network's 60 Minutes programme, with an interview taped in Mumbai.

This time, Rai will be seated at the Ed Sullivan Theatre in Manhattan, to chat with Letterman about her first English-language movie.

Bride And Prejudice, directed by Bend It Like Beckham director Gurinder Chadha, puts a Bollywood spin on the classic Jane Austen period novel, Pride And Prejudice.

The film also stars Martin Henderson, Naveen Andrews, Namrata Shirodkar, Sonali Kulkarni and Anupam Kher.

Rai is all set to make a foray into Hollywood, having been signed on for international productions like Chaos, with Meryl Streep, and Racing The Monsoon, opposite the film's co-producer, Michael Douglas.

I am f***** sick of this lady. I hate Bride and Prejudice and I haven't watched the damn movie. I also sick of Gurindher Chadha using this crap movie as her ladder into Hollywood. You do talk shows and other interviews when you are popular and everybody knows you. Nobody knows the most beautiful woman in the world. It's embarrassing and she looks pathetic. :x

Aishwarya on the Oprah Winfrey show

By IndiaFM News Bureau, February 10th, 2005 - 1300 hrs IST

Actress Aishwarya Rai is going places. In literal sense! If not in terms of the box-office performance of her films then at least in her international appeal. The gorgeous actress will soon make an appearance on the renowned Oprah Winfrey show. Incidentally Aishwarya is the first Indian actress to feature on the popular TV show. This is a part of her publicity campaign for her film Bride and Prejudice that releases in US in the third week of February.

Just recently the actress featured on the CBS program 60 Minutes. She has also made it to the cover of Time and Rolling Stone magazine. Last year her wax model was installed at the Madame Tussaud's museum.
