Why can't Sandish or someone from DEI respond to the issue of 'squished picture' and atleast give their explanation for the problem and why they are unable to rectify it? Do they even admit to the existence of the problem?
Here's a transcript of two emails I got from Sandish @ DEI regarding this problem, way back on 3rd March 2001
"We have gotten some complaints about a couple of DVD's, namely Kudrat,
and it looks like now Khuddar. We have found the problem.
The very first DVD's that were released were new movies in the
anamorphic format....Krodh, KNPH, Jung etc.
Our colorist kept framing the old movies in the same fram as the new
ones....not knowing that some of these were 2.55 to 1. Even with his trained
eye, he couldnt tell. The problem for him was that there is no labeling, or
anything telling whether a film is 2.35 or 2.55. Even here, we wouldnt tell
that some of these anamorphic were 2.55.
So to rectify the situation, we have told him to first do the film in
2.55 if it is an older film, then 2.35, then make a judgement call whether
the film is 3.25 or 2.55...but in the meantime a few transfers have been done
where its too late, in which we will re-transfer later on. So, DEI makes
mistakes too...lol....i'll wait to here back from you....by the ways...the
percentage is 9% overstrech....2.55-2.35/2.55."
And a follow up when I asked which titles have been affected by this problem;
"Thanks for your reply, the titles affected by this problem are Kudrat,
Khuddar, Deewana, Nastik, and we have not recieved the Digi-Beta's for Sacha
Choota, Sadha Suhagan, and Jigar....out of these i dont know which ones are
full screen, and which ones widescreen.
After these titles, the problem has been rectified. Apparaently, the
reason there was no problem at the beggining was that all the first newer
movies we 2.35 aspect ratio, but i guess live and learn....tell your viewers
that DEI is sorry for this error, and it has been rectified.
But still to be honest, it is barely noticable, whereas i think the
average viewer will not even notice."
This was a day short a year go and the same problem still continues.
The reason why I keep badgering this issue is that it can easily can be fixed by any competent person and it’s making DEI look very amateurish, a year after the problem was brought to their attention and nothing been done about it. I would still prefer DEI did newer titles on DVD if the choice is between Eros, Video Sound and YRF. But when their quality is dropping with titles like Abhay and YDA, and their continuing blunders in this video framing problems, they are going to end up no better than Eros, VS and YRF.
