Unconventional ending for Fida

By IndiaFM News Bureau, August 16th, 2004 - 1300 hrs IST

Ken Ghosh's Fida starring Fardeen Khan, Kareena Kapoor and Shahid Kapoor is all set to release this Friday and the buzz is that the director has gone for a very different ending for the film. The tagline of the film reads 'Not all love stories have a perfect ending' and we are not just going by that. Insiders claim that Ghosh has gone in for a really sad and 'hatke' ending for his film (as against his mushy-mushy happy ending in Ishq Vishk), which might also turn out to be the highlight of the film.

Keep waiting till this Friday.

** IMHO, POOH THE WICKED WITCH OF EAST, does not look good with CUTE SHAHID KAPOOR!
MUSIC is OK! to GOOD! imho!very much on line with ISHK VISHK!
But ISHK VISHK worked on its freshness cast/youth theme!!

Fida is paisa vasool!

Shilpa Bharatan-Iyer | August 20, 2004 18:43 IST

Shahid Kapoor's second outing, Fida, is a simple love story with a twist.

The TIPS produced film is worth a watch for its acting and slick editing. Director Ken Ghosh has done well in his second film as well.

Jay (Shahid) is a happy-go-lucky orphan. Though his best friend Sonia (Kim Sharma) is in love with him, he has his dream girl all figured out in his mind.

He chances upon Neha (Kareena Kapoor) drinking a cold drink and realises at once that she is his perfect woman. He expresses his feelings to her but it takes much convincing to finally win her over.

Small films make waves at US box office

Where did Jackson's millions go?

Their dream gets a blow when Neha tells him her father was a criminal and had borrowed Rs 60 million from the underworld. It is up to her to return the money within three days or be dead.

Jay decides to rescue his damsel in distress and prepares to rob a bank. But when he goes to the bank, he meets Vikram (Fardeen Khan) who withdraws Rs 70 million from the bank, and decides to rob him instead.

After the initial plan to rob him goes awry, Jay decides to take Vikram into confidence.

But Vikram has a secret.

What is it? Will he help Jay recover the millions before the Mafia gets its hands on Neha?

Ken Ghosh has scored another winner after his first film, Ishq Vishk. The movie drags initially, but picks up pace with a very surprising end.

Shahid and Kareena have done a great job.

Shahid is entirely convincing as the love-struck lad who is ready to do anything for the girl of his dreams.

Kareena has finally moved beyond Poo in K3G and has come into her own. She has portrayed the parts where she is racked by guilt very well.

Fardeen is his usual suave self.

Anu Malik's music has a youthful appeal that adds flavour to the film.

Fida has its share of incongruities. But having said that, let me add Fida is definitely paisa vasool!

Fida

By Taran Adarsh, August 20th, 2004 - 1730 hrs IST

A keenly anticipated film comes with the baggage of big expectations. And if the film happens to be FIDA, which teams Page 1 personalities [Shahid Kapoor and Kareena Kapoor] together for the first time, is directed by an immensely talented name [Ken Ghosh] and produced by makers who cut no corners while making a film [Tauranis], the expectations are not just gargantuan, but also multiply ten-fold.

So, how does one describe FIDA? And, most importantly, does the film meet the expectations?

FIDA has several things going in its favour. It has a fresh cast, is filmed at some panoramic locales of South Africa and Dubai and yes, boasts of great music.

But the lifeline of any film is definitely not its face-value or visual appeal, but its content-value. And it is in this area that FIDA weakens. Well, let’s just say, all films don’t have the perfect script… and FIDA is one of them!

The film begins with a heist. A person hacks into the bank account of an underworld don [Akhilendra Mishra] and transfers the huge sum to his account. The police is on the trail of the hacker, so is the underworld don.

Jai [Shahid Kapoor] has a vision of a girl he’s going to fall in love with and one fine day, he sees her. She’s Neha [Kareena Kapoor].

Jai woos her relentlessly, even swallows sleeping pills to prove his love. Neha realizes that not only does he love her, but is completely smitten and obsessed. She reciprocates…

Everything’s going fine for Jai and Neha, till Neha tries to attempt suicide one day. Reason: Her father, now dead, was a criminal who had taken a loan of Rs. 6 crores. It’s payback time for Neha. If she doesn’t return the sum within three days, the gangsters would settle scores with her.

When Jai learns of it, he decides to rob a bank. But Neha forewarns him against doing something drastic like that. Yet, Jai visits a bank and to his surprise, finds a man withdrawing a big sum from his account. The man is Vikram [Fardeen Khan].

Jai follows him to his plush mansion and attempts to rob him in the night, but Vikram outsmarts him and captures him. Jai tells Vikram the motive behind the robbery. Vikram strikes a deal: Tell the cops that Jai is the hacker and he’ll give him the Rs. 6 crores that he requires so desperately.

Jai agrees. He is arrested by the cops and is about to be produced in court when the underworld don’s henchmen attack. The don wants Jai. There’s exchange of gunfire and Jai escapes. He lands up at Neha’s house and is shocked to see something that shakes him up completely.

Jai’s love-life comes to a screeching halt, he feels betrayed, he seeks revenge…

First things first! There’s tremendous speculation that FIDA is a mix of three English flicks – REAR WINDOW, SLIVER and THE TRUMAN SHOW. But it’s not. By an uncanny coincidence, FIDA bears a striking similarity with Abbas-Mustan’s flicks – AJNABEE and HUMRAAZ. The essence is the same: A scheming couple conning an innocent guy for selfish reasons.

The film takes off as a routine love story with the boy wooing the girl with flowers, swallowing pills, then singing and dancing to romantic tracks. In fact, the first half-an-hour of the enterprise seems like any other love story.

But the goings-on get interesting the moment Kareena attempts suicide. The Fardeen-Shahid pact, Shahid’s subsequent arrest, the exchange of gunfire outside the courtroom, Shahid’s subsequent escape from cops, his landing up at Kareena’s home takes the film to an all-time high.

The interval point specifically is amongst the best sequences of the enterprise. It raises the expectations of a thrilling second half. But the post-interval portions suffer due to inept writing.

Shahid decides to settle scores and guns for Fardeen and Kareena. So far, so good. But the game of one-upmanship in the post-interval portions is a complete downer and the climax is its biggest drawback. Though the end is novel [it’s not a happy ending], the sequence of events that lead to the climax is far from exciting.

Ken Ghosh needs to be lauded for swimming against the tide, by opting for a story that defies stereotype. But writers Lalit Mahajan and Sunny Mahajan have just not been able to deliver. The writing is plain mediocre in the post-interval portions and by the time you reach the finale, you’ve already lost interest in this thriller.

Of course, the writers have come up with a few interesting scenes, but the impact that a thriller ought to make is simply missing. Even the end may not find many takers – it does not give you the feeling that the movie has ended on a satisfying note. It looks abrupt.

Anu Malik’s music is of a superior quality and the aggressive promotion by the producers only enhances the impact of songs. ‘Nazar Nazar’ [Shahid’s introduction] and ‘Aaja Ve Mahi’ [brilliantly filmed] are the pick of the lot. Cinematography [Amit Roy] is fantastic. The film wears a posh, classy look throughout. Dialogues [Kiran Kotrial] sound fresh at times.

And now for the most important question… Do Shahid and Kareena make a good pair? Of course, they do. But more on that later.

Shahid Kapoor has all it takes to be an actor of substance. He handles his part with complete understanding. His outburst in the train, after he has been conned, is proof that the actor has the range to deliver. But, hello, why did Shahid need to ape Mr. Bachchan in the finale? In the post-interval portions too, the actor in him takes a complete backseat and the zeal and enthusiasm is clearly missing.

Fardeen Khan is fair. He has the suave look to carry off this character. But he suffers largely due to a sketchy characterization. His role doesn’t give him scope to match Shahid and Kareena’s well-penned characterizations.

Kareena Kapoor is in great form. The actress gets the best part and must say, she sinks her teeth into it and emerges with flying colours. This is amongst her finest work to date. She looks bewitching as well. Plus, the chemistry between Shahid and Kareena is electrifying.

Akhilendra Mishra hams. The character of a don looks more like a buffoon.

On the whole, FIDA has thrilling moments, but not enough to entice you completely. At the box-office, the film will find the going tough after the initial euphoria settles. Mainly a big city film, its prospects should be better at multiplexes.

Rating:- * *.

KYON PHIR HOGAYA NA!

((Whilst the production team have been calling Fida original and different, its sadly ended up being a bad movie... ))

FIDA (2004)

Release Date: August 20, 2004
Producer: Tips
Director: Ken Ghosh
Cast: Shahid Kapoor, Kareena Kapoor and Fardeen Khan
Music: Anu Malik
Lyrics: Sameer

RS RATING: 5/10

Background:
Director Ken Ghosh made the surprise blockbuster Ishq Vishk with Shahid Kapoor and Amrita Rao. He has a bigger heroine in the form of Kareena in the follow-up Fida, not to forget Fardeen Khan too. However lets not forget both Fardeen and Kareena are minuses when it comes to hits...

Synopsis:
Jai (Shahid Kapoor) meets (Neha) Kareena Kapoor and falls madly in love. He’s a young enthusiastic lad and wants to make a successful name for himself, as well as pleasing Neha and making her happy. In the meantime there is a Don (Akhilendra Mishra) who has a lot of money, which has been stolen by someone who transfers the money into a bank abroad. The don wants to kill the man who committed the crime.

Now Neha comes to Jai with a sob story that she needs crores of rupees for her sick father. Jai is ready to do anything for the money and meets the suave Vikram Verma (Fardeen Khan). Vikram is the guy who has robbed the money from the Don and tells Jai to take the wrap for the crime…in return he gets the money! Jai agrees and therefore the angry don wants him killed before the courts get him.

Things get even worse when Jai realises the shocking truth…he’s been set-up by Vikram and Neha!

Critique:
Whilst the production team have been calling Fida original and different, its sadly ended up being a bad movie. The first half is boring (why have three songs in thirty minutes?), although the film does pick up in the second half.

The performances are probably the highlight of the film. Shahid Kapoor and Kareena Kapoor are good, while Fardeen Khan isn’t too bad either. These three performances are the only reason why you should see the film.

Akhilendra Mishra is too loud for one to comprehend.

The music is catchy and the visuals are good. The cinematographer does deserve a pat on the back for sometimes managing to camouflage the director's mistakes.

After an Ishq Vishk, the audience doesn’t expect Ken Ghosh to make a film like this one. Even though the film has the tag ‘not all stories have perfect ending’, this one does not have a good beginning either, let alone perfect! Shahid and Kareena do look good together and the chemistry works till the Vikram-Neha nexus is exposed during the interval. After that, the chemistry looks so unreal.

*** No spoiler revealed!

First Day First Show has FLOP written all over:

http://www.indiafm.com/broadband/04/aug ... ndex.shtml

First day First show reactions to Fida

The atmosphere outside Novelty theatre screening Fida spells bad news for the producers of the movie. The IndiaFM camera was present to capture the audience reaction to this Tips film. To start with, despite being a national holiday and no competition in terms of a big release, the film has failed to fetch an opening. The combination of Kareena Kapoor-Fardeen-Khan-Shahid Kapoor have not been able to pull people to theatres. Theatre sources informed us that both the evening shows have not been fully sold.

The crowds storming out of the theatre don’t look too happy either. When asked whether they like the film, the crowd says “bakwas hain”. Another response is, “Bas theek hain”. A teenager tells “Nothing special. It’s just another typical bollywood film”.

Is the much-hyped Kareena-Shahid jodi working? Audiences don’t seem to agree, “Kuch khaas nahi hain”. “It’s not like they make a great pair or something. The chemistry is so-so”. Another person says “Shahid is cute. Kareena is okay”.

The crowd was more generous towards Fardeen. “Fardeen ka kaam acha laga. He has done a good job. He looks good and does his role well”. Also, Kareena Kapoor’s negative role seems to have got the junta slightly upbeat.

Neither the cast, chemistry nor the movie canvas seems to be calling in the crowds. Call the hurried release and weak promotions as the culprit, but the box office doesn’t seem to be smiling at Fida

BUSINESS TALK

By Taran Adarsh, August 26th, 2004 - 0930 hrs IST

'Fida' Fizzles Out!

Now this is extremely strange! Almost every newspaper/magazine/television channel/website had carried umpteen reports on real life pairs making their first screen appearances in a film project. Resultantly, the films - KYUN! HO GAYA NA… [Vivek, Aishwarya] and FIDA [Shahid, Kareena] - made big news prior to their theatrical release.

But big news may not necessarily translate into big openings at the ticket window.

While the Vivek-Ash prem katha has proved to be a disaster, the Shahid-Kareena twist-in-the-tale FIDA opened to a much better response. If the opening of this thriller was exciting at multiplexes of Mumbai, Delhi and Jaipur, it's initial at several cinema halls across the country didn't live up to the humungous expectations.

Despite tremendous hype and brouhaha encircling the film, despite the curiosity to watch the real-life jodi on screen for the first time, despite million dollar-worth free publicity in the media [thanks to the pairing], despite incredible promos, despite fantastic pre-release promotion by the Tauranis… what really came as a surprise was the fact that FIDA opened to a much below-the-mark response at several cinema halls. Shocking, but true!

The audience response to FIDA has been extremely mixed. While the response varied from good to below average at multiplexes, the negative verdict at the single screens loomed large on the opening day itself. The hoi polloi just didn't go ga-ga over FIDA.

Even in the Overseas territory, the film hasn't made it to the Top 15 charts in U.K. or Top 40 charts in U.S.A. [click here to read the article].

So, where did the film falter? In my opinion, the script is its biggest shortcoming. The screenplay of FIDA, more so towards the post-interval portions, didn't have the power to keep the viewer glued to the screen. The climax was different of course, but somehow the end seemed so abrupt!

Mind you, the viewer of today is ready to absorb anything innovative or hatke, but the substance in FIDA was not exciting enough for the viewer to get bowled completely.

While the opening weekend collections of FIDA were better at multiplexes, the collections did show a slight dip on the subsequent days. Yet, overall, its business at multiplexes of Mumbai and Delhi should prove to be the best, as was expected. But in some circuits, it might end up as a loser!

CLASH OF TWO OPPOSITES

Two diametrically opposite films are scheduled for release this week - DHOOM and PHIR MILENGE. While DHOOM seems like an action flick, targeted at the youth, PHIR MILENGE is an issue-based film.

From the industry point of view, both DHOOM and PHIR MILENGE are important. Not only do they star reputed names both on and off screen, the concept of the two films defies the stereotype. And if they succeed [let's pray they do - we need hits desperately!], it would give the others the courage to attempt daringly different cinema.

BOX OFFICE UPDATE-27th August 21.00 IST

It seems that Kareena Kapoor has proved her worth with Fida. The film looks set to have the highest first week gross where the biggest star is the heroine. As the first week collections come in it looks like the film has done nearly 3 crore from the Mumbai circuit alone. If the rest of the country also does well then the film may gross around 8 crore nett.It seems like that certain trade analysts were too keen to flop this film and this is not the first time it has happened.

Kareena may have made a point in India but in the Overseas market it is all about Aishwarya, her next release Bride and Prejudice is expected to gross over 100 crores in the Overseas market.Yes it may sound unbelievable but that is what know all predicts.Forget the heroines no hero has ever had a grosser like that in the Overseas market.

I guess people will have to just eat their words.

Congratulations on  Fida
