The Indian film "Black Friday" is a docufiction film based on the same
name book about the Bombay blasts.
A bit like JFK and Company mixed together (not exactly, but there
is no other film like it in Indian cinema, Bandit Queen is somewhat
close).
Technically it's well done with great sound and good 35mm photography.
There are no Bollywood shenanigans. Some scenes have a slight
Bollywood touch ('unnecessary' humour, some crass police violence)
but nothing clearly out of place. It's not a family film and it will be
interesting to see how Indians react to it. I can recommend it.
It's long and a bit confusing. You have to see it several times to get
all the details. An important film. If it makes money it will allow many
similar films to follow.

Anurag Kashyap is an inventive screenplay writer, and potentially a great director. A combination that's very rare and needed in Hindi Cinema. But no thanks to Bollywood, an industry now exclusively to those that suck d*#k for box office fame, we'll likely never get to see one of his films. Even after 3 years, Paanch has yet to see the day of light.

The film is released in September. It will be cut by 20 minutes. Should help since it's too long.
The performances were good. Naturalistic.
I did not know any of the cast but all were good.

Black Friday now on telly

January 12, 2005 15:38 IST

Director Anurag Kashyap's film, Black Friday is being extended into a television serial.

The movie is an adaption of Mid-Day journalist S Hussain Zaidi's book on the March 12, 1993 Mumbai bomb blasts.

Black Friday the centre of attraction at the ongoing Mumbai Academy of Moving Images festival, will be converted into a television serial after its theatrical release on January 28. The serial will consist of 13 episodes of 23 minutes duration, or five episodes of one hour each, according to Kashyap.

The film is 2 hours, 51 minutes long.

Additional footage will be shot for the television serial, which would include actor Sanjay Dutt's arrest and customs officer S N Thapa's alleged role in the movement of RDX, the explosive used in the blasts, the director said.

Kashyap plans to ask Dutt to act as himself in the serial.
