In the past there had been lot of coverage in Film magazines and Film sites for Vivek, Aish, AB's "Kyon Ho Gya Na" but come release time (Tomorrow), there isn't much reported. Occasionally, there is some mention of it, but no hype.
It's not even playing at Albion Woodside in Toronto??
No sign at Galaxy Cinema in Atlanta?? http://www.galaxycinema.com
No mention at http://www.boxofficeindia.com

I thought it was a big film, anxiously waiting release. ??

KHGN: Part-time fun

Sita Menon | August 13, 2004 09:19 IST

Aishwarya Rai in KHGNInstead of 'All characters in this film are imaginary' etc etc, director Samir Karnik should have said this: All those who want to know how to have fun while making a film, watch this film. Any resemblance to anyone not having fun is totally untrue and imaginary.

More on fun and other catchphrases in Kyun! Ho Gaya Na...

Pyaar aur haar Arjun ke dictionary mein nahin hai and sundry Arjunisms.

Mr Point: Arjun Khanna (Vivek Oberoi)

Keywords: Loves sports, all kinds of sports, including some you might not have heard of. The more known ones are, car rallys, bowling, soccer. Sometimes moonlights as the train vendor T S Ranganathan or Ranga. He's a nice guy. Easy to con. He cons others just as easily, especially newfound buddy Diya Malhotra, with his practical jokes. Oh ya, he believes in arranged marriage with a passion. Not quite sure why, but it has something to do with the glorious tradition of arranged marriages in his family.

Don't Miss!

Showcasing Kyun! Ho Gaya Na...

Ms Counterpoint: Diya Malhotra (Aishwarya Rai)

Keywords: Has a friend for a dad and a mysterious Uncle whom she vows she doesn't want to speak to. She will soon take an exam for a degree in Social Work, for which she travels to Mumbai from her hometown, Coorg. Believes in love marriage with a passion, and is so super keen to meet her Mr Right that she gets starry-eyed at a train vendor's ideas on wooing a girl.

'Souriers' and the art of witty repartee.

All roads lead to Arjun, of course (Vivek Oberoi shares the dialogues credits as well). Strangely, the bulk of the witty moments are in his relationship and interaction with others, not so much Diya. Take the scene where his man Friday tells him he has a 'sourier' (courier) for him.

Another is the one where director Samir Karnik's takes a dig at his own movie, where he appears in a cameo as a short-tempered director stuck at a romantic scene. Arjun sets up the situation for him in a takeoff on the famous comedian Mehmood. No one compares to Mehmood, of course.

Aishwarya Rai and Vivek Oberoi in KHGN

And the other bylanes in Arjun's father (Om Puri), who makes a domestic career of picking on his wife (Rati Agnihotri). Friendship and affection are offset only by their own quirky game of one-upmanship on each other and their son.

C'mon Charlie and Operation Uncle Mission of the unholy devils.

And then there is the man with a penchant for a quaint phrase: "C'mon Charlie." He is a cross between Shammi Kapoor's Brahmachari and Anil Kapoor's Mr India, runs an orphanage with a motley crowd of little hellions and delights in being the master hellion.

He is also Diya's favourite Uncle (Amitabh Bachchan, in a wacky, over-the-top avatar).

'Itna sabkuch hone ke baad... sochna padega' and a few reality checks.

Some reasons why you need a reality check on KHGN:

A weirdly dragging first half (not even the opening car race and the energetically and imaginatively picturised songs can help). The film picks up after the interval but then again loses pace halfway through the second half. It could have safely done away with 30 minutes.

Arjun's declarations on arranged marriage seem just an escapist's way out than any real belief in the tradition. He might be a confused soul, but all avowals die soon when jealousy rears its head in Arjun.

In the amazingly picture perfect world of Kyun! Ho Gaya Na…, there is no room for human failing, no blemish, nothing other than Arjun's own self-absorption. The film is a celluloid advertisement for house beautiful and some assorted product placements.

Samir Karnik ka party tha...

The film's single-minded devotion to fun and light-heartedness probably alludes to a larger emerging picture, with earlier films like Dil Chahta Hai, Kal Ho Naa Ho, Hum Tum and, to a certain extent, Lakshya, bringing in an urban cool sensibility to cinema. This is a comedy of manners world of suave sophistication, of people comfortable enough to do nothing more than enjoy the good life.

Vivek Oberoi, Aishwarya Rai in KHGN

Little details form a large part of his film – the parallel between 'Arjun' and the orphan child 'Parth'; the director's insertion of his name in the film as a third person; Karnik's own cameo in the film; the reel-life-real-life friendship between Tinnu Anand (who plays Diya's father) and Amitabh Bachchan; the 'twist' in the name Diya (without going into spoilers, here's a hint: you will have to wait till the end to find out the connection).

Kyun! Ho Gaya Na… is an assured first-time effort (Samir Karnik is pulling a fast one if he says he doesn't know how to take a shot!). Wish he had induced some real pace into the film instead of the simulated energy he achieved in his songs.

Speaking of which, the music needs special mention. Ranging from country Western and traces of Western classical to rap and rock, Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy's tunes are young, energetic and peppy. They are also visualised well by cinematographer Sudeep Chatterjee and Samir Karnik.

It wouldn't be a surprise if this situational comedy fares very well in the metros.

Hopefully, not a flop.

BRAVO.

Released in a big way. Six main stream thetres in Toronto. AMC-24 in Ottawa. Also playing in Vancouver, Calgary, Edmonton, Montreal main stream theatres.

No 'B' theatres, like Albion Woodside, yet.

BTW, when was the last time a Hindi film opened in 6 or more main stream theatres in Toronto. May be Devdas??

Kyun! Ho Gaya Na…

By Taran Adarsh, August 13th, 2004 - 1600 hrs IST

A number of questions cross your mind as the curtains on KYUN! HO GAYA NA… are about to be unveiled...

The first question is obvious. Will Vivek Oberoi and Aishwarya Rai make a good on-screen pair? Will the on-screen chemistry be electrifying -- so vital for a love story?

The year has witnessed a number of debutantes leave an impression on the big screen. Will Samir Karnik, who makes his debut as director with KYUN! HO GAYA NA…, do justice to the subject he has chosen to make?

And, most importantly, will KYUN! HO GAYA NA… live up to the mammoth expectations?
Now for the answers...

The casting of 'good friends' Vivek and Aishwarya is enough to generate tremendous excitement in a film project. However, the chemistry between this good-looking couple is clearly lacking in the film. Yes, there are romantic moments in the enterprise, but your heart does not pine for the lovers at any given time. Also, you don't yearn to see them together.

Debutante Samir Karnik is a sound technician. His debut vehicle KYUN! HO GAYA NA… is well shot, with each frame looking beautiful. But one wonders, what was it about the [waferthin] story that bowled Karnik completely. So much so that he stretched it into an 18 reeler. The hallmark of any love story, be it Q.S.Q.T., MAINE PYAR KIYA or the recent HUM TUM, is the emotional quotient it has to offer and the twists and turns in the plot.

Sadly, the script of KYUN! HO GAYA NA… is its biggest drawback. Yes, there are a few interesting emotional moments, but a handful of well executed sequences do not camouflage the harm caused by an uninspiring screenplay.

Despite a fabulous producer like Boney Kapoor to back him and a dream cast at his disposal, Samir Karnik has not been able to deliver the goods.

Diya [Aishwarya Rai] is a sensitive girl whose childhood was spent in the coffee plantation town of Coorg. Malhotra [Tinnu Anand] had single-handedly brought up Diya after his wife passed away.

Malhotra has a dear friend, Raj Chauhan [Amitabh Bachchan], who has dedicated his life to a small orphanage he runs at his home. Diya has been involved with the work there and is committed to social work. She comes to Mumbai to appear for her exams.

In Mumbai, Diya meets Arjun [Vivek Oberoi], a fun-loving guy. By a sheer coincidence, Diya is put up at Arjun's house since Arjun's parents [Om Puri and Rati Agnihotri] happen to be Malhotra's friends.

The friendship that develops between Diya and Arjun and consequently their opposing views on love and marriage is what the film is all about.

A good chunk of the story of KYUN! HO GAYA NA… reminds you of the Tusshar-Kareena starrer MUJHE KUCCH KEHNA HAI, where the guy just doesn't muster enough courage to express his love to the girl of his dreams. He does it only towards the end...

Similarly, the screenplay is structured on the lines on HUM AAPKE HAIN KOUN, with light moments [games, fun-filled moments] dominating three-fourths of the film, while emotions/relationships dominate the last part.

The screenplay of KYUN! HO GAYA NA… has been credited to several writers. But despite so many writers putting their heads together, the outcome is half-baked. To be honest, the love story loses focus mainly due to the inept writing. The writers are to be blamed completely for churning out a bland fare that neither has the grip of MUJHE KUCCH KEHNA HAI nor the moments of HUM AAPKE HAIN KOUN.

After the initial introductions, the story just doesn't move in the first half. In fact, the first half relies on moments, but not all moments are magical. Besides, the flow of songs in the first half is a major deterrent, with tracks coming up without valid situations ['No No', a terrific number, looks completely forced in the goings-on].

The intermission does raise expectations of a better second half [Amitabh enters at this juncture], but the story suddenly changes lanes and instead of concentrating on the two lovers, starts focussing on the kids in the orphanage. Strange, but true!

Besides, the sequences in the orphanage involving Bachchan and the kids are meant to evoke mirth, but the pranks are so juvenile and bizarre that it just falls flat.

However, the film does gather momentum in the last 25 minutes. The gradual transformation in Vivek's behavior is well depicted and the presence of Suniel Shetty comes across as a twist in the tale. But the pace at which the drama unfolds is what takes the graph of the film down again. Even the climax, when Amitabh reveals his game-plan, does not have the desired impact.

Director Samir Karnik is saddled with a puny story and a shoddy screenplay. Perhaps, the writers took everything for granted. Cinematography is excellent. Every sequence looks visually rich.

Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy's music is melodious, but is not the type that would compel you to watch the movie again. 'Pyaar Mein Sau Uljhane Hain', 'Aao Na' and 'No No' are the best tracks, although the latter looks forced in the narrative.

Vivek Oberoi tries hard to enact the role of a lover-boy, but succeeds partly. He impresses only towards the latter reels. Aishwarya Rai looks stunning [like always!] and enacts her part well. But she looks ill at ease in light moments.

Amitabh Bachchan is extremely likeable. Suniel Shetty is passable. Dia Mirza is there for just one scene. Om Puri and Rati Agnihotri are commendable. Tinnu Anand is adequate.

On the whole, KYUN! HO GAYA NA… is body beautiful minus soul. At the box-office, the film may generate curiosity on the strength of its impressive cast as well as the fantastic promotion embarked upon by its makers, but the film doesn't have the merits to emerge victorious after the initial euphoria settles. It might find some patronage at multiplexes of metros.

Rating:- * ½.

KYUN? HO GAYA NA (2004)

Release Date: August 13, 2004
Cast: Vivek Oberoi, Aishwarya Rai and Amitabh Bachchan
Director: Sameer Karnik
Producer: Boney Kapoor

RS RATING: 3/10

Background:
The very first onscreen union between real life lovers Aishwarya Rai and Vivek Oberoi has resulted in a decent amount of hype for Kyun? Ho Gaya Na. Its also the first time college buddies Sameer Karnik and Vivek Oberoi are working together…but perhaps they should stick to friendship and avoid a working relationship in the future?

Synopsis:
Dia (Aishwarya Rai) knows a little about love and dreams about meeting her dream man and living a life of happiness. Of course this isn’t something that differentiates her from countless other women around the world! Anyway, she meets a newspaper vendor called Ranga (Vivek Oberoi in disguise) who helps guide Dia in the right direction. Meanwhile, Arjun (Vivek Oberoi again!) is the type of guy that doesn’t like to lose in life. He has seen his parents Om Puri and Rati Agnihotri behave with each other in life and thus wants an arranged marriage. He does not believe in love! Finally there’s a nice uncle (Amitabh Bachchan) who wants to play cupid and get the couple together. He runs an orphanage and has a bunch of naughty kids for company. Although we won’t reveal too much about the surprise elements in the film, involving the likes of Sunil Shetty, Diya Mirza and Tinnu Anand, since this would make the mundane climax even more mundane!

Critique:
Oh dear! Sameer Karnik makes a bad debut with ‘Kyun? Ho Gaya Na’. The guy is actually quite funny in life, but that sense of humour hasn’t come across in the movie. A bit more time spent on the script would have really benefited him.

Vivek Oberoi is probably the highlight of the film. His performance is pretty decent but it’s not good enough to salvage the film. Aishwarya looks gorgeous – we can safely make this comment about most of her movies now! However she doesn’t bring enough life into her character. Amitabh Bachchan, the legend of Indian cinema, needs to retire before signing so many shoddy movies. The superstar has such immense talent and needs to become more selective before the audience stops awaiting his movies. He deserves much more.

‘Kyun? Ho Gaya Na’ features some great comic moments, but that does not hold a film together. The songs are very well paced and shot energetically as well. One just wishes that the director had made the same kind of effort in making the film look good as well. Camerawork by Sudeep Chatterjee is interesting, but that does not make a film. Maybe that is good enough to get the audience into the theatres, but that will not help sustain for long as the film looks good only for the sophisticated audience in the metros. The common man will not be able to relate to most of the film. In a nutshell, the first half is slow; the film picks up midway... but loses steam... towards the end.

Conclusion:
Despite heavily promotion and the whole ‘Aishwarya-Vivek’ hype, the film doesn’t meet expectations. It’s definitely not essential viewing, which is a shame for everyone involved. With a heavy release of movies hitting the big screen this month, its chances are not too encouraging.

AISH-VIVEK PAIR FAILS ON SCREEN

By Pankaj Shukla

Critic's I-view

click for larger view

Film making has come a long way in Bollywood. Now, there are so many production houses attached to just one film; they share the cost of the production. If it is an entertainment channel like Sahara Entertainment is associated with the production, it gets the satellite rights in lieu of money poured in the making. Some get associated for the sake of sheer business and some put the money to get the distribution rights. However, the most obvious question comes to mind when we talk about 'Kyun! Ho Gaya Na'.

Let's see whether chemistry between the real couple of Aishwarya Rai and Vivek Oberoi works or not. The answer is a big no. Aishwarya looks much older to Vivek who has been cuddling with the lady ever since she parted ways with Salman Khan. Then there were accidents on the sets of 'Khakee' and 'Yuva' where both got injured and the whole world saw them rushing to see each other in both cases. There were so many reports about the pair getting cozy on so many occasions be it the Cannes Film Festival or other parties. Aishwarya looks pretty once again on the screen whereas Vivek fails to impress this time too. He is a chocolate boy with surma in eyes but when he stands in the same frame with Aishwarya Rai, he just looks like a prop and nothing more. The casting has failed from the very first frame; Aishwarya looking much older to Vivek who falls in the shadow of her sheer beauty.

'Kyun! Ho Gaya Na' was believed to depict Vivek and Aishwarya's real life romantic pairing in reel life too. There have been pairs like this in the past too like those of Raj Kapoor-Nargis, Dev Anand-Suraiya, Dharmendra-Hema Malini, Amitabh Bachchan-Rekha and lately Salman Khan-Aishwarya Rai. The last one not only looked a perfect match off screen, but they set the screen on fire when in a film. But, the Vivek and Aishwarya pair fails to impress in this film. This was purported to be a romantic comedy and Aishwarya Rai traveled almost whole of India doing road shows. She looked more interested in putting Vivek in the first block of super stars of Bollywood than promoting her film. Her last hit was 'Devdas' and after that she parted ways with Salman and since then she hasn't been able to deliver a single hit. This may be a coincidence though.

'Kyun! Ho Gaya Na' is a romantic film and mind it that there is no comedy in the film whether situational or a created one. Vivek plays Arjun, a motorcar racer, who does not have words like defeat and love in his dictionary. In weird circumstances he meets Diya (Aishwarya Rai) on train only to know that this girl is going to stay in his house in Bombay for her exams. Arjun is a prankster by nature and loves to tease her mother (Rati Agnihotri) with his father (Om Puri). Diya's father (Tinu Anand) wants to get her married but she is against the idea of an arranged marriage.

However, Arjun will marry only that girl who is liked by his parents. Arjun plays jokes with Diya. All this for him is just a part of entertainment whereas Diya starts loving him. She tells her feelings to Arjun. Diya leaves for her home and Arjun follows her to say sorry as he too falls in love with her. But, by the time he is ready to propose to his love lady, it's too late as preparations are on for her marriage. In between enters the dear uncle to all (Amitabh Bachchan) who runs an orphanage and now is all set to make these love birds meet for once and all. Will the cupid strike for the lovebirds? Will Arjun succeed in getting Diya back in her life? The climax has the answer; Suniel Shetty and Diya Mirza too join in for a happy ending.

click for larger view

Samir Karnik turns director with 'Kyun! Ho Gaya Na'. The film is a full 18 reel movie to hold the audience's attraction for three hours. There are too many flaws in the film. First, Sameer has himself written the film and has failed to develop the characters fully. Vivek is shown as a car racer just once otherwise he is just an unemployed spoilt brat. Aishwarya is shown as a studious girl though at 30 plus she doesn't fit the role. Om Puri and Rati Agnihotri are wasted in miniscule roles.

The story movement is not controlled; it keeps on changing tracks with no relation from the previous plot or scene. Dialogues are a major let down and Vivek Oberoi too joins the band of dialogue writers in his film (maybe he is competing with Salman here too). But, he has let down in all fields, be it acting, dancing, dialogue delivery or in timing with other actors. Aishwarya has been rejected in all her films where she wears western outfits. She seems to be oblivious to this fact even now.

Technically, the film just has good camera work. All other departments have fallen flat. The film needs to be chopped off by at least half an hour. Music by Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy is a major let down and choreography too fails to impress. Overall, 'Kyun! Ho Gaya Na' will fail to meet the expectations of the viewers. Some people may like it for the sake of Aishwarya but that will not help it hit the box office. Aishwarya and Vivek both need a hit at this stage, but sorry, Yeh! Nahin Ho Paya.

BOX OFFICE UPDATE-14th August 16.00 IST

Kyon Ho Gaya Naa opened to a poor response all over, some multiplexes were a bit better but overall a dull start. The reports are also bad.Kaun Hai Jo Sapno Mein Aaya opened to dull houses all over.Taarzan-The Wonder Car records a poor first week and has little chance of recovery.Mujhse Shaadi Karogi has had a decent second week and seems set finish around the 30 crore mark. The film is best in Delhi/UP and Rajasthan with W Bengal and Mysore lagging.Julie is a winner all over.

Sholay re-released in Mumbai circuit on 15 prints gets a better initial than KHGN on seat utilization basis. The first day saw a 85-90% response for this classic blockbuster.

FIRST DAY ALL INDIA AVERAGE INITIAL

Kaun Hai Jo Sapno Mein Aaya 20-25%

Kyon Ho Gaya Naa 45-50%
