Julie' fit for Oscar

Raipur, July 27 (IANS) A member of the censor board that cleared "Julie", the movie in the eye of a storm in Chhattisgarh for its allegedly explicit scenes, believes it has the potential to be nominated for an Oscar.

Responding to protests against the Neha Dhupia starrer, Dilip Banerjee, member of the Central Board of Film Certification, Tuesday said the movie "is based on a solid theme and has the potential of being nominated for an Oscar award".

Talking to reporters here, Banerjee advised Hindu Raksha Manch activists, who stormed a theatre screening the movie directed by Deepak Shivdasani here Saturday, to give up their protests as the film did not contain "sex masala" or scenes "infected with Western culture".

"I have seen `Julie' in the wake of protests. Nothing wrong with any scene or the role of the actress. In my opinion, the film is fit to be nominated for an Oscar," he said.

He rejected complaints from Hindu hardliners that the movie was loaded with erotic and vulgar scenes.

"The movie has been allowed to be screened with an 'A' symbol (adult certification), but I found that the theatre owner here had not either been showing the 'A' symbol during the movie's screening or on the posters which have confused certain organisations and stoked protests," Banerjee said.

Meenaxi was a poor film. I don't think the Indian jury commitee would send this film...it has gotten poor reviews at some international film festivals. Only the cinematograhy was noted.

I would send either Matroboomi, Maqbool, or Virumandi. These are the films of 2004 that have provided quality Indian screenplays, and great Indian performances.

I agree with Sunny, MAQBOOL will be a GOOD PICK!

Well I haven't seen "Julie" yet

But as for films to send to the Oscars - it is hard to say...

I agree, "Meenaxi" would be a bad choice

I think "Maqbool" would be our best bet - though Pankaj's "brando act" could hurt the film's chances

"Virumaandi" is also a good choice - though the climax was a bit over-the-top

I also think "Chameli" would be a good choice

I cringe at the very thought of M.F. Husain's Meenaxi being labelled as a "bad" movie, or that it's storyline was confusing. It's an incredible artistic achievement--the film works wonderfully depicting great deal of abstract, form, colour, music, and movement. The more I see the film, the more I become convinced that it's an Indian film like no other, and truly one of the best I've seen in a long-f**king time.

To quote the great Abbas Kiarostami, "the age of storytelling is over."

The film didn't click for me as I have already experienced better surreal films from other countries. Meenaxi aimed to be similar to many Eastern European films...one scene was even directly copied from the Slovak film "Preto Conthe" - (can't remember exact spelling) which I saw at a film festival...

There are better films in Indian cinema that offers what you describe in your post..

I loved the violent climax, particularly the way the villain dies...gross and well deserved!!!

Other films to add in the list...

Abar Aranye - Directed by Goutam Ghose, which is the sequel to Aranyer Din Ratri (1969) by Satyajit Ray.

Maargam - Rajiv Vijay Raghavan

I saw these at the comonweatlh film festival showings in UK and they were some of the better films from India.

I have nothing against the violence in the climax, it was specifically Pasupathi's death which I thought was a little too much (falling off the roof after being hit by the 2 projectiles) - nothing against the violence though
