The super-success of Punjabi film ASA NU MAAN WATNA DA has infused life in the Punjabi film industry. Not only is the film doing phenomenally well in Punjab, but is also setting new records in the Overseas territory. Like MAHERCHI SADI revived the Marathi film industry and BAI CHALI SASARIYE revived interest in Rajasthani films, ASA NU MAAN WATNA DA has prompted a number of producers to start Punjabi films now.
Deepak Grewal, who had been associated with Shekhar Kapur and Rajkumar Santoshi [right from GHAYAL, GHATAK, LAJJA, CHINA GATE to THE LEGEND OF BHAGAT SINGH] in the capacity of a production executive and associate director, has now turned independent director and his first film, in Punjabi, will star two giants -- Om Puri and Amrish Puri -- in stellar roles.
Produced by a Canadian of Indian origin, Pinky Basrao, the film, titled YAARIYAN, will be shot entirely in Canada in August and September this year. "It's a genuinely different film," Deepak states, "Both Om-ji and Amrish-ji were floored by the script [also penned by Deepak]." Incidentally, this is the second time the two actors have been pitted against each other in a Punjabi film, after CHAN PARDESI, which, when released, proved a huge grosser.
YAARIYAN co-stars the icon of Punjabi movies, Gurdas Maan, in a key role. Deepak has also signed an East African actor Okuku, who speaks Punjabi fluently. Adesh Shrivastava and Sachin Ahuja score the music.
It is guaranteed that this movie will be shot in Vancouver since the Pinky Basro guy lives in Vancouver and brings most of the bollywood shows, he also said at the salman, sanjay dutt show that he will start producing movies.
