The heroes of Deewar

Okay, so we have had enough Pak-bashing movies. But just when you thought they were going to stop, another one rears its head.

The latest one in line is Milan Luthria's Deewar: Let's Bring Our Heroes Home. Starring Amitabh Bachchan, Sanjay Dutt, Akshaye Khanna and Amrita Rao, the film deals about 33 Indian prisoners of war trapped in Pakistan, since the 1971 war.

This will be Bachchan's third release in a row, after Govind Nihalani's Dev and Farhan Akhtar's Lakshya.

Luthria's directorial debut Kachche Dhaage (Ajay Devgan, Saif Ali Khan, Manisha Koirala and Namrata Shirodkar), was a surprise hit. But his second film, the recent Chori Chori (Devgan, Rani Mukerji) failed to rake in the moolah, thanks to a long delay in the making.

Deewar, which has also delayed considerably, will hit the marquee on June 25.

*** Pathetic/COP /ARMY SHOWERS! KHAKEE,MHN, BARDASHT,Chars POLICE FORCE, AAN, DEV, LAKSHYA, DEEWAR!! Damn it! How many should we are supposed to see in 3 months!and their r tons more coming for rest of the year!

Image

usualy Milan Lutharia's stuff is front bencher oriented!!with heavy dose action, item numbers!! he is not a dependable director for quality!!

LOC and Lakshya may not be Hits, but Deewar sure will be. Synopsis is interesting. Deewar doesn't seem to be a war film or a cop film. Seems like a thriller/ spy/ gimmicks film to me. Rambo like?? Deewar starcast is attractive enough to pull in good initial.

Additionally, because it has the Lucky Mascot, Amrita Rao. All her films have done well (many unexpectedly), whether it's because of her or not.

HAHAHA...Another paki-bashing film? bring it on!

Honesty, this India-Pakistan love affair is gonna end in divorce the moment there's another terrorist attack in India. As for the film industry, they'll be peace as long as there's money. It's all about the R$$$

I think it's clear that Indian and Pakistani soldiers hate each other, so why not show this hate on screen? I guess the people of both contries can be easily manipulated by films to hate the other side! Don't they have minds of their own?

Chori Chori, that ajay-sonali-rani film I wasted 3 hrs of my life watching today on Zee TV!

Kache Dhaage was better but still not very good I think. But if this film is a copy of "The Great Escape" I'll probably not bother watching it.

Was 'The Great Escape' about rescuing Indian POWs??
If not, it can't be a copy, by definition.
Great techniques/ tricks are copied/ followed by all, always, and why not.

Nope, but I believe the favourite word used by filmmakers (instead of copy) is inspired. Now the majority of films 'inspired' by Hollywood are pathetic and shamefull to say the least. Now I believe Indians can do better than that and be a little more original, so because I don't like to see second-rate versions of Hollywood films by India, I simply don't support them - by not going to see them. In the same way, I boycott Eros DVD's for producing junk products.

I do go to see Indian films that are original, ground-breaking and genuinly good films.

BOX OFFICE UPDATE-22nd June 14.30 IST

This weeks sees the release of Deewar and the superstitious traders see this film as a winner because the film has in its cast the two lucky mascots of the hindi film industry in Akshaye Khanna and Amrita Rao.Akshaye Khanna has not seen a flop in a long time Dil Chahta Hai,Humraaz,Deewangee and Hungama have all had certain amounts of success.Amrita Rao also has a hat trick of successes behind her in Ishq Vishk,Masti and Main Hoon Na.
------------------------

Wow, they even used the same adjective 'Lucky Mascot' for Amrita Rao. I didn't know Akshay Khanna too is considered Lucky Mascot. :)

Good Luck to Deewar and our Heros.
Bring our Heros home; See film in theatre; Bring out quality DVD; don't patronize pirates.

"is Deewaar a take on the McQueen/Garner/Attenbourgh film The Great Escape?"

Probably, along with every other escape/POW film ever made... "Bridge on the River Kwai", "Hart's War", " First Blood 2"... maybe even "Last Castle"

"Gayab" I think also has some "Mr India" influences

From Music India Online (Milan Luthria, Director (Deewar))
" We (the writer Shridhar Raghavan and himself) worked on a thriller format based on classic escape thrillers like "The Great Escape". So, even before you ask, let me tell you we were most certainly inspired by other escape movies. It has more to do with the way they shot certain scenes and lighting. Also, as with "Kachche Dhaage", which was the first road film in India, I realised that breaking into hitherto untapped territory - the big escape thriller - would be a very interesting journey to attempt. "

What is he talking about? The recent "Agni Pankh" dealt with the same theme. Though it was a horrible film.

I doubt this guy's film will be any better
