What do you mean by "Indian masses"? Indians in India? Indians everywhere? As I recall Samay wasnt a hit either in the US or the UK. Also Hawas wasnt a hit in India. KHNH was a massive hit in US and UK but not so in India.

Anyway Samay was a excellent movie. Sushmita seems to be teh best actress these days along with Tabu.

No offence taken. My point was that indian people abroad by and large do not have any better taste than indian people in india. I am exasperated by condescending statements by NRIs about the tastes of people in India.

After all the same good movies you quoted above did not play well abroad either. I do agree with you that good movies unfortunately do not get patronized by indians(either in india or abroad) in large numbers

Sorry!! Didnt get ur point, FIRST time..I agree, MASSES overseas, are ALIKE patronizing only certain kinda movies..The others, they DONT EVEN , EVER release or if DO, GO HOUSE EMPTY!!
I have a special concern here, for UK audience who hugely PATRONIZE CRAP, even to extent of YAADEIN/YHJ/YRHPK..those were ABSOLUTE SHIT films, from any STANDARD!

It is not that I am in USA, but in USA, if they PATRONIZE, routiene CHEEZY AFFAIR of YRF/JOHAR/SRK etc..
They atleast dont PATRONIZE..JUNK...

Thats WHY, we have ZULM, to let TRUE CINEMA LOVERS know, that there are GOODIES out there, besides mOHABTAEN/K3G/YAADEIN..
So, DONT MISS THEM!! 8)

There is another consideration.

Some programs suit theatrical viewing and some home viewing.
For example, how many people can you gather for a theatrical screening of 60 hour TV serial (in 20 sittings) Ramayana or Mahabhatat. The same were extremely popular on TV and on Home Video. How many Ramayan and Mahabharat 3 hour films have been released and flopped.

To fill a theatre, you need hype (over sell) and curosity.

Serious films find patronage in home viewing.

Kaagaz Ke Phool is another example.

BTW, how many people will sit through watching 2 hours of extras after watching 4 hrs of Mohabbatein or 3 hrs of MHN IN THEATRE (or how many sit through end credits). The same extras are highly sought after in home video versions.

Theatrical version requires fast pace and lots of hype. Serious features withought hype find patronage at home.

Whatever, rana!! but, I dont think, it is a JUSTIFICATIOn, for DEBACLE of GOOD FILMS!! Not finding PATRONAGE!!

It is DISGUSTING, the way MOST HINDI FILMS WATCHING MASS AUDIENCE taste is SCREWED!

Theatres fill with hype (over sell). Because of, just hype (over sell), even LOC recovered it's cost before the word spread aqbout its merrit. Bardaasht was not an excellent film; was not bad either. It could not stand to the hype of MHN. As soon as MHN appeared, Bardaasht collections dropped by 80%. Any other time Bardaasht would have done better.

Again, rana!! i'll respectfully differe!!
There is no comparison, of MHN to MEENAXI or BARDASHT eithere!!

Bardasht is those kinda film, with same GHISSA PITTA FORMULA, finding hard time to stand on its own, it is NO FORMULA, NO SERIOUS CINEMA, NO HARD HITTING, NOR ACTION either..I was hugely DISAPPOINTED!

BARDASHT has no COMPARISON to, EHT/SAMAY/MAQBOOL..all 3 films r NOVEL/DIFFERENT/VERY WELL MADE! No SONGS/NO GLAMOUR/NO HARD HITTING, NO FORMULA, NO EXPENSIVE SETS, LOCALES, JEWELERY, MAKE UP, man!!

Come on!! you guys should try to UNDERSTAND FRESH FILM MAKING, HOW it STANDS OUT from the SAME OLD TRADITIONAL GHISSA PITTA and not even WELL MADE formula!~!

I know there are other people on this forum, who besides rana, thought BARDASHT was a DECENT film..

Some how, Unfortunately, I found it a LAME, STALE story, without PUNCH or MASALA MAKING elements!

I did differ with people on KHAKEE too, that imho, was just an ABOVE AVERAGE film..nothing much..yes..Ajay and Music were HIGH LIGHTS imho.

Same for CHALTE CHALTE..I thought it was REAL LOUSY FILM!Formula or not, I didnt care!
